About the company

Cosun is a Dutch agro-industrial cooperative owned by about 8,100 sugar beet, potato, chicory, and other crop growers. It processes crops into food, animal feed, bio-based products, and green energy, using its diversified group of companies. Its approach includes Aviko (large-scale potato processing), Sensus (inulin from chicory), and Duynie (upcycling co-products into animal feed). The company pursues plant-based innovations under its Unlock 30 strategy, investing in high-quality proteins such as fava bean protein and other sustainable ingredients funded by subsidies for new facilities. Cosun differentiates itself through collective farmer ownership, long history, and a diversified, integrated structure that turns raw crops into multiple value streams rather than focusing on a single product. Its goal is to shape the future of food and materials by expanding plant-based solutions and sustainable ingredients for a changing world.

What believers are saying

  • Lithuania granted Cosun a protein-factory subsidy in December 2025, supporting plant-protein expansion.
  • Aviko acquired Eurofrits on 14 February 2026, widening its Spanish frozen-snack platform.
  • Cosun and Enzymit reached 200-liter pilot-scale hyaluronic acid production, validating higher-margin ingredients.

What critics are saying

  • European sugar prices collapsed in 2025; Cosun cut 2026 beet allocation to 90%.
  • Cosun posted 2025 EBITDA of €269 million, down from €518 million, forcing 2026 measures.
  • If sugar stays weak through 2027, cooperative payouts and member loyalty will erode.

What makes Cosun unique

  • Royal Cosun is owned by 8,100 growers, aligning sourcing, capital, and farmer returns.
  • Aviko gives Cosun global potato processing scale across snacks, fries, flakes, and foodservice.
  • Unlock 30 bundles sugar, ingredients, proteins, and bio-based products into one platform.

Enzymit and Cosun achieve pilot-scale biomanufacturing of hyaluronic acid

Enzymit and Cosun achieve pilot-scale biomanufacturing of hyaluronic acid. Enzymit, a synbio company pioneering cell-free biomanufacturing, has partnered with Cosun, a leader in sustainable plant-based ingredients, to successfully produce hyaluronic acid (HA) at a 200-liter pilot scale. Using an enzyme-only, cell-free process, they generated multi-kilogram quantities of high-purity HA, demonstrating greater efficiency and consistency than traditional fermentation methods. Hyaluronic acid is a highly valuable biopolymer used in dermal fillers, wound healing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. With the global market projected to reach nearly $16 billion by 2035, the demand for high-quality biomaterials is rapidly growing. Enzymit's innovative process is the first to enable manufacturers to control HA's size during production. Using standardized enzymatic steps, they can produce HA ranging from about 10 kDa to 4 MDa with narrow size distribution, simply by adjusting process parameters - no need to change enzymes or organisms. Marie Dobenesque, CTO of Cosun RD&I, said, "We're proud to support Enzymit's journey from lab to pilot scale. Their process development and factory operation were successful using existing assets, showing this cell-free technology is becoming an industrial reality in record time." This platform leverages AI-designed enzymes to synthesize complex bioproducts faster, cleaner, and more efficiently - without living cells. Gideon Lapidoth, CEO of Enzymit, emphasizes that this breakthrough not only advances HA production but also signals a future where molecular biomanufacturing is driven by precision, removing biological bottlenecks.
