BuzzFeed layoffs slash HuffPost National desk from 7 to 3 reporters

BuzzFeed's latest round of layoffs has reduced HuffPost's National desk from seven to three reporters. Management laid off 10 HuffPost Union members in total on Monday. The cuts are part of BuzzFeed's July announcement to eliminate approximately 180 positions across its properties, representing 35% of the company's workforce. This marks the first major restructuring since Byron Allen acquired a 52% stake for $120 million and became CEO in May, succeeding founder Jonah Peretti. The HuffPost Union, represented by Writers Guild of America East, successfully fought off proposed cuts to severance and unused PTO payouts. BuzzFeed reversed its policy of compensating laid-off employees for unused PTO shortly before the cuts, but union members retained this benefit through their contract. HuffPost previously eliminated 30 editorial positions in January 2025, cutting approximately 22% of its newsroom.

BuzzFeed cuts 35% of workforce as Byron Allen restructures after $20M acquisition

BuzzFeed is cutting roughly 35% of its workforce, affecting about 180 staff and contract positions across BuzzFeed, HuffPost, and Tasty. The restructuring marks the first major change since media mogul Byron Allen acquired a majority stake in May for $20 million in cash and a $100 million promissory note. The company cited the need to achieve "profitable and sustainable growth" whilst managing mounting financial struggles. BuzzFeed reported a $15 million net loss in the first quarter, with revenue declining 12.4% year-over-year to $31.6 million. Ad revenue fell nearly 20% to $17.1 million, though content revenue grew roughly 69% to $7.5 million. The millennial-focused media company plans to grow its audience and strengthen its position in free streaming content.

Byron Allen cuts jobs at HuffPost weeks after BuzzFeed acquisition

Byron Allen is cutting jobs at HuffPost weeks after acquiring its parent company BuzzFeed. More than a dozen workers will be affected by the redundancies, according to an internal memo from editor-in-chief Whitney Snyder. Executive Editor Kate Palmer, who joined the outlet in 2012, is also leaving the publication. Allen acquired a majority stake in BuzzFeed earlier this year and became chief executive. He plans to transform BuzzFeed into a streaming-focused media company to rival YouTube, with content appearing on his streaming service Local Now. Allen is currently selling broadcast TV stations to pay down debt from various media acquisitions.

5 publishers adopt AI answer engine to combat traffic loss to ChatGPT, Google

Five major publishers including The Arena Group, BuzzFeed, DMGT, Frommer's and Sports Illustrated have partnered with Gist, ProRata's white-label AI platform, to deploy question-and-answer search technology and advertising formats. The platform features "Gist Answers" and "Question Bar", allowing publishers to keep readers onsite when searching for information rather than losing traffic to ChatGPT or Google Gemini. Publishers retain search data whilst advertisers can sponsor questions and track engagement patterns. Founded by Bill Gross, creator of the pay-per-click model, ProRata has raised over $75 million since launching in 2024, including a recent $40 million Series B round. The technology addresses growing concerns about AI models diverting traffic from publishers, with recent research showing 37% of consumers now start searches with AI engines rather than traditional search. Gist aims to serve 500 million questions monthly by June.
