13 years of doing solar differently in Santa Barbara.

13 years of doing solar differently in Santa Barbara. For 13 years, Brighten Solar Co. has helped Santa Barbara homeowners embrace solar energy through education, transparency, expert craftsmanship and a commitment to lasting relationships Sponsored by Brighten Solar October 13, 2026 | 1:00 pm Thirteen years ago, Marine Schumann and Jeremy Favier looked out over Santa Barbara from the Riviera and noticed something that didn't add up: abundant sunshine nearly year-round, yet rooftops largely bare of solar panels. So they started asking why. Before launching Brighten Solar Co., they spent seven months researching the local market, interviewing homeowners, architects, contractors, and sustainability officials across the county. The barrier, they found, was trust, not interest. Solar had developed a reputation problem, locally and nationally: aggressive sales tactics, confusing financing, and homeowners who felt misled. A technology meant to save people money had become something people approached with caution. "We didn't want to build just another solar company," says Schumann, co-founder and CEO of Brighten Solar Co. "We wanted to build the kind of company homeowners told us they wished they had worked with: one that would educate them, be transparent about the costs and tradeoffs, and still be there long after the installation was complete." The research gave them a clear direction: before homeowners could decide, they needed honest information about how the technology works, how it integrates with a roof, and what it truly costs. That became Brighten Solar's mission, education first, and it remains so thirteen years later. There was also a local challenge: Santa Barbara's clay tile roofs, which give the region its character but require specialized skill to install on. Marine and Jeremy, both from France, already knew this terrain, since solar has long been installed throughout southern France on similar roofs, giving them something uncommon locally: the know-how to install without compromising a home's integrity or character. "A solar system should never come at the expense of the home it is meant to improve," says Favier, co-founder and COO of Brighten Solar Co. "The quality of an installation is not measured only by how much energy it produces on the first day. It is measured by how safely, reliably, and respectfully it performs over decades." Together, that education-first mindset and the technical expertise to work with tile roofs properly became the foundation of Brighten Solar Co. That same commitment to trust led to one of Brighten Solar Co.'s most significant partnerships - not a residential rooftop, but a corporate headquarters. In 2017, Deckers Brands installed solar at its Goleta campus: close to 1,200 panels, 394 kilowatts of capacity, producing an estimated 634,000 kilowatt-hours a year, enough to offset nearly 100 homes' electricity use. Almost a decade later, Brighten Solar still partners with Deckers, extending its educational approach to employees considering solar and storage for their own homes. That same sense of responsibility guided Brighten Solar's approach to battery storage: technologies chosen for safety, reliability, and environmental impact, rather than simply following what was most widely marketed. Brighten Solar's roots in the community have grown the same way, one relationship at a time: the Community Environmental Council's Solarize program, the Environmental Defense Center, public webinars on solar and energy resilience, certified green business status since 2018, and support for Unite to Light's solar-lighting work. Thirteen years later, the questions homeowners ask haven't changed much: will solar work on my roof, will it hold up, and can I trust the installer? What has changed is the landscape around those questions - financing, battery technology, grid reliability, and why people choose solar in the first place. The answer Brighten Solar built its reputation on has stayed the same: education first, not a sales pitch. Respect the character of every home, because no two roofs, families, or energy needs are identical. Treat each project as the beginning of a relationship, not a transaction, whether it's a corporate headquarters or a first-time residential installation.

Deckers leads footwear stocks with mixed Q2 results, shares drop 15.9%

Deckers Outdoor reported second-quarter revenues of $1.02 billion, up 5.7% year on year, meeting analysts' expectations. The footwear and apparel conglomerate, established in 1973, delivered a mixed quarter with earnings per share exceeding estimates but full-year revenue guidance only meeting expectations. The company's shares fell 15.9% following the results, currently trading at $80.94. Deckers provided the weakest full-year guidance update amongst the seven consumer discretionary footwear stocks tracked. The broader footwear sector reported a strong second quarter, with revenues beating consensus estimates by 1.3%. However, share prices across the group have declined an average of 6.1% since earnings announcements. The industry faces challenges including intense competition, high marketing costs, and exposure to volatile raw material prices.

The company raised its full-year fiscal 2027 EPS guidance to about $7.35 to $7.50 and maintained its net-sales guidance of about $5.86 to $5.91 billion. Deckers Outdoor (NYSE:DECK) shares closed at $87.76 at their last session, up 1.66% on the day, as the footwear company behind the HOKA and UGG brands continues to deliver record sales. For investors, the combination of continued growth in its two powerhouse brands and a raised outlook is what makes the company worth a fresh look. Deckers designs and markets footwear and apparel, led by HOKA (performance running) and UGG (comfort and lifestyle), selling through wholesale partners and a growing direct-to-consumer channel. Its results depend on the growth of HOKA and UGG, its direct-to-consumer and international expansion, and its management of margins amid Tariff and cost pressures, in a competitive footwear market. Latest Developments In its fiscal first-quarter 2027 results (the quarter ended June 30, 2026), Deckers reported record net sales of about $1.020 billion, up 5.7% year over year, with HOKA Revenue up 7.7% to about $703.5 million and UGG up 4.9% to about $278.0 million. Gross Margin improved to 56.4%, and diluted EPS edged up to $0.94, supported by share repurchases. Direct-to-consumer sales surged 13% (with comparable sales up 6.8%), and international sales grew 8.4%, outpacing domestic. The company raised its full-year fiscal 2027 EPS guidance to about $7.35 to $7.50, maintained its net-sales guidance of about $5.86 to $5.91 billion, and noted its outlook did not assume the collection of previously paid tariff refunds. Financial and Business Position Deckers' record sales, its growth in HOKA and UGG, its strong direct-to-consumer and international expansion, and its raised EPS guidance reflect a healthy, well-managed footwear company with two powerful brands and improving margins. Its direct-to-consumer strength improves both margins and Brand control, and its international growth offers a long runway. Stock-Market Context Shares closed at $87.76 at their last session, up 1.66% on the day. The stock carries a favorable analyst rating in the data underlying this article, and the quiet strengthening reflects the record sales and raised guidance. The fresh-look case rests on HOKA and UGG sustaining growth, continued direct-to-consumer and international expansion, and margin strength. The cautionary case is the slower growth than in prior years, tariff and cost pressures, the two-brand concentration, and a premium valuation. Two Brands Still Delivering Durable Growth Deckers has become one of the more impressive stories in footwear, built on two brands that each command genuine consumer devotion, and its quarter demonstrated that the model continues to work even as growth moderates from its prior torrid pace. HOKA, the performance-running brand, remains the primary growth engine, and UGG, the comfort-and-lifestyle brand, continues to grow while defying expectations of seasonal or fashion-driven fade. Particularly encouraging was the mix of growth: direct-to-consumer sales surged 13% with positive comparable sales, which is higher-margin and gives Deckers more control over its brand presentation, while international sales outpaced domestic, pointing to a long runway of global expansion for brands that are still under-penetrated outside the United States. Improving gross margin and a raised full-year EPS outlook, achieved despite tariff pressures the company is not counting on recovering, reflect disciplined execution. Investors watching this story will want to see HOKA and UGG revenue growth continue, direct-to-consumer and international trends hold up, and gross margins withstand tariff pressure. For investors, the fresh-look case rests on HOKA and UGG sustaining growth while direct-to-consumer and international expansion and margin strength continue, proving the brands have durable, global staying power rather than peaking momentum.
