Requirements
  • CMA candidates must be graduates of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Knowledge of practice management systems and office automation skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology and International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision coding.
  • Experience assisting physicians with patient care, including taking vital signs and collecting specimens.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain vital signs and general health information for patient charts and prepare patients for examination.
  • Maintain patient health records in an up-to-date status, particularly current medication sheets.
  • Ensure documentation is complete, concise, and correct.
  • Prepare and maintain examination rooms and medical equipment for patient visits.
  • Contribute to plans of care for individuals and groups of patients, applying principles to reduce medication errors when handling or calling in medications or refills.
  • Suggest and implement problem-solving approaches and plan service performance.
  • Perform safety checks and follow Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines in examination rooms, chart documentation, exposure practices, and discussions of protected health information.
  • Triage patients and enter accurate, concise data into the electronic medical record (EMR), ensuring spelling and clarity.
  • Navigate the EMR system efficiently and use it to facilitate quality care management and best practices.
  • Promote continuity of care through appropriate actions, notes, and prompt follow-up.
  • Answer phones, route calls, and take accurate messages.
  • Respond with urgency appropriate to the patient's level of distress.
  • Triage basic patient-care needs and generate telephone encounters as appropriate, ensuring a duplicate message has not already been started.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date demographic and insurance information for patients, and follow applicable policies for privacy notifications, Medicare secondary payer information, signed demographic registrations, and consent to treat minors.
  • Identify barriers related to social determinants of health and notify the provider.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and scan insurance cards.
  • Monitor appropriate work queues and assist clinic personnel with follow-up to ensure patient compliance and receipt of test results and specialist reports; proactively contact patients with test results.
  • Ensure orders are entered correctly to capture appropriate charges.
  • Refill medications according to medication refill guidelines.
  • Identify barriers relevant to patients' individual financial, emotional, physical, cultural, or spiritual needs.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the clinic manager or provider that are within the CMA/RMA scope of practice.
