Yu Ming Charter School

View

Yu Ming Charter School is a public, tuition-free K–8 charter school in Oakland that offers a Mandarin immersion program. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, it is funded mainly through state and local public funding plus federal funds, grants, and donations. The curriculum uses a one-way dual-language model, with 85–90% Mandarin in K–2 and a gradual shift to more English in later grades, while maintaining high achievement in math and reading. The school blends academic excellence with whole-child education and social-emotional learning, supports diversity and equity, and aims to produce biliterate students and global citizens with broad access for families across California.

What believers are saying

  • 2026 LCAP says Yu Ming already secured two permanent facilities for long-term stability.
  • CSFA's August 2025 credit enhancement cut borrowing costs on Yu Ming's facility loan.
  • Enrollment projections climb from 952 to 1,373, supporting LCFF revenue growth through 2030.

What critics are saying

  • Oakland's temporary MLK Jr. campus and leased sites keep facilities expensive and unstable.
  • 2025–2026 financing tied Yu Ming to $13 million debt and $14.66 million EFF borrowing.
  • If enrollment stalls below projected 1,373 by 2030, Mandarin-immersion scale becomes existentially strained.

  • 2025 CAASPP results reached 82.8% met-or-exceeded in ELA and math combined.
  • 2026 LCAP keeps a one-way Mandarin model and family demand for immersive bilingual schooling.
