About the job

Requirements
  • At least 4 years in a technical, customer-facing role such as Solutions or Sales Engineering, Forward Deployed or Deployment Engineering, Implementation or Integration Engineering, Solutions Consulting, or software engineering with meaningful customer exposure.
  • Proficiency in TypeScript or JavaScript, including Next.js, React, Node, or Fastify, and the ability to ship production-grade code and independently build an integration or demo tool.
  • Practical experience integrating third-party APIs and enterprise systems using REST, JSON, authentication or OAuth, and webhooks, including working from unfamiliar or incomplete API documentation.
  • Working SQL skills and a solid grasp of relational data sufficient to model, transform, and connect realistic data for integrations and demo environments.
  • Experience owning technical work end-to-end from requirements through build, testing, and a working rollout, including work handed off afterward.
  • Strong technical judgment and troubleshooting ability, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A product mindset toward internal demo and sandbox tooling, treating it as a product with users in the go-to-market team.
  • Familiarity with AI-powered products, conversational AI platforms, or data-driven systems.
  • Ability to operate autonomously and with ambiguity, and to communicate effectively with customer engineers and Account Executives.
  • Willingness to work full-time in-office at the New York City location.
Responsibilities
  • Own technical scoping and feasibility for pre-sales opportunities and partner integrations, translating ambiguous requirements from prospects, partners, and Account Executives into concrete implementation plans.
  • Build working integrations against third-party APIs, customer relationship management systems, field service management platforms, telephony systems, and partner ecosystems, including writing code and handling REST APIs, JSON, authentication, and webhooks to produce proofs of concept.
  • Build and maintain demo and sandbox tooling for the go-to-market organization, including reusable demo environments, representative fixture data, and internal tools; turn one-off deal builds into reusable integration patterns, reference implementations, and scripts.
  • Configure and tune Avoca's conversational AI for demo and proof-of-concept scenarios, including prompt engineering to reflect real customer workflows.
  • Serve as the technical counterpart to Account Executives and Partnerships in discussions with prospect or partner engineering teams, establishing technical credibility and translating conversations into plans that non-technical Account Executives can use.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues arising during evaluations, pilots, and proofs of concept to protect at-risk deals and partner launches.
  • Feed recurring integration gaps and field learnings back into the Product and Engineering roadmap, and keep demo environments current as the product evolves.
  • Own the pre-sales build and demo layer, partnering with Forward Deployed Engineering and Implementation to hand off builds that need to become hardened production deployments.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prompt engineering experience.
  • Experience with call center or communications platforms.
  • Experience with customer relationship management or field service management integrations.
  • Prior Partnerships or channel support experience.

About the company

Avoca AI provides an AI-powered communications platform designed for service-based businesses like HVAC and plumbing. Its core product uses an AI workforce to handle inbound and outbound communications across phone calls, texts, web chats, and lead sources, including first-ring call answering, 24/7 appointment booking into a company’s CRM (such as ServiceTitan), and handoffs to human agents for complex cases. The platform integrates with existing systems to support lead capture, follow-up, and outbound outreach, and it includes an AI coaching module that analyzes calls to deliver performance insights and training ideas for human agents. Avoca aims to reduce missed leads, increase conversions, and improve team performance by automating communications while providing managers with actionable coaching data.

  • Y Combinator, Kleiner Perkins, and ServiceTitan partnerships validate distribution and product credibility.
  • The company says it is on track to book $1 billion in jobs during 2026.

What critics are saying

  • OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic commoditize voice agents, forcing Avoca into price competition by 2027.
  • Avoca's $1 billion valuation and 2026 growth expectations create brutal execution pressure if bookings slow.
  • Enterprise dependence on ServiceTitan and trade platforms creates existential platform risk if partners launch rivals.

What makes Avoca AI unique

  • Avoca's ServiceTitan integration books jobs directly from calls, texts, and chats, reducing workflow friction.
  • Its three-product stack, Convert, Nurture, and Coach, spans acquisition, scheduling, and rep training.
  • Home-services specialization targets high-value HVAC and plumbing leads where one missed call loses thousands.

MIT poker night leads to $1B AI startup serving HVAC companies

Avoca, an AI startup founded by MIT engineers Tyson Chen and Apurva Shrivastava, has raised $125 million and achieved a $1 billion valuation by selling AI call support to blue-collar businesses. The founders initially built AI phone answering systems for restaurants before pivoting to HVAC companies after meeting Rescue Air. The company's business model capitalises on higher transaction values in home services, where a missed call could mean losing a $30,000–$40,000 HVAC installation versus a $40 restaurant order. Avoca's AI representatives answer calls instantly and operate 24/7, enabling businesses to extend service hours without additional staff. The startup is betting on continued human demand for tradespeople whilst AI handles administrative tasks. The HVAC market is projected to reach $445.73 billion by 2033.
