Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent general education degree is required.
  • An Associate’s Degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education, a minimum of two years equivalent to 48 semester hours of study at such an institution, or successful completion of the Paraprofessional Assessment Test is required.
  • Applicants with a degree from a foreign university must obtain a foreign transcript evaluation.
  • Effectively communicate by speaking, reading, and writing in English.
  • Present information and respond to questions from supervisors, staff, students, and the public in an understandable manner.
  • Read and interpret procedures, policies, regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Perform basic arithmetic operations and apply them to U.S. currency, weight, volume, and distance measurements.
  • Resolve practical problems and handle a variety of non-standard situations.
  • Interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, and schedule-based instructions.
  • Present a lesson.
  • Experience working with office machines.
  • Lift up to 40 pounds regularly and perform the stated physical requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the teacher in creating a positive learning environment that facilitates students’ personal, social, and intellectual development.
  • Assist in assessing and meeting the information needs of students and faculty.
  • Assist the librarian in developing programs that stimulate students’ interest in reading and resource use.
  • Organize books, films, tapes, records, and other materials and equipment.
  • Review records to compile overdue-material lists and notify students and faculty to arrange returns.
  • Assist the librarian with instructional and supportive services.
  • Instruct small groups and tutor students one-on-one.
  • Assist with library and classroom management.
  • Conduct parent involvement activities.
  • Communicate with students, staff, agencies, and community members.
  • Assist students in lunchroom, library, gym, pool, and locker room areas as needed.
  • Prepare instructional materials and supplies for library use.
  • Supervise students on morning and afternoon buses and in assigned areas such as the gym and hallways.
  • Immediately report accidents, assaults, property destruction, and abusive behavior.
  • Operate library and office equipment.
  • Adhere to District policies and regulations.
  • Support the District’s education values, philosophy, and mission.
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.
Desired Qualifications
  • Inupiaq-speaking ability and cultural experience are preferred.
