Lumentum says some optical capacity is sold out through early 2029 as AI demand outruns supply.

Lumentum says some optical capacity is sold out through early 2029 as AI demand outruns supply. October 10, 2026 / SemiMedia / - Lumentum Holdings said some of its optical component capacity is effectively sold out through early 2029 as AI data center expansion and rising demand for high-speed optical connectivity continue to outpace supply. CEO Michael Hurlston said the company is still far behind customer demand despite aggressive capacity expansion. For some products, around 70% of demand could remain unmet next year, while other product lines may still face a roughly 30% shortfall in 2028. Lumentum supplies indium phosphide and other advanced optical components used in high-speed cloud and data center networks. As GPU clusters become larger, demand for 800G, 1.6T and next-generation optical links is increasing rapidly, making lasers, modulators and related photonic components a critical part of AI infrastructure. To increase supply, Lumentum has expanded capacity at its core manufacturing site in the Tokyo area by about 12 times over the past two years. The company plans to invest at least $350 million in that site and adjacent facilities while also increasing production at its Caswell operation in the United Kingdom. New optical manufacturing capacity, however, takes time to build. Hurlston said adding major new production capability can require three to five years, limiting how quickly suppliers can respond to the current increase in AI infrastructure demand. Hyperscale cloud companies are increasingly helping suppliers manage that risk through long-term commitments and capital support. Lumentum said some customers are willing to share part of the investment burden in order to secure future optical component supply. The shortage highlights how AI infrastructure constraints are spreading beyond GPUs, HBM and advanced packaging into optical connectivity. Lumentum expects annual sales to more than double this year and is also considering acquisitions to add further capabilities over the next year. Lumentum stock rises 6% as AI demand fills optical orders through 2029.

Lumentum stock rises 6% as AI demand fills optical orders through 2029. Shares of Lumentum Holdings LITE rose 6% in pre-market trading on Friday after Chief Executive Officer Michael Hurlston said demand for the company's optical components had exceeded available supply, with orders booked through early 2029. The company is struggling to keep pace with demand from technology firms expanding artificial intelligence data centres. Hurlston told Bloomberg News in an interview in Tokyo that Lumentum was unable to meet a significant portion of customer demand and was working to expand production capacity. Lumentum orders sold out amid AI data centre demand. Hurlston said Lumentum's optical components were "completely sold out" through early 2029, adding that customers were already beginning to secure orders for 2030. The company cannot meet around 70% of demand for some products through next year and expects to fall short of 30% of demand for certain other products through 2028, he said. Lumentum supplies advanced indium phosphide devices used in high-speed data transmission and cloud computing. Its technology is becoming increasingly important as AI workloads require faster connections between servers, data centre racks and computing systems. The company's products include lasers that encode data onto light near chips, reducing the distance that high-speed electrical signals need to travel. Optical connections can also reduce power consumption and heat generation compared with conventional copper-based interconnects. Hurlston said the opportunity could expand significantly as optical technologies move closer to AI accelerators. Demand for lasers in next-generation AI systems is expected to gain traction around 2029, he added. Nvidia investment supports expansion plans. Lumentum received a $2 billion investment from Nvidia earlier this year, alongside a similar investment in rival Coherent. The funding highlights the growing importance of optical technologies to AI infrastructure. To meet demand, Lumentum has increased capacity at its Sagamihara facility in Japan twelvefold over the past two years. The company plans to invest at least $350 million in the site and a neighbouring facility, with $75 million deployed so far. It has also expanded capacity at its plant in Caswell, England. Hurlston said Lumentum was considering purchasing a facility in Japan and could seek subsidies to support further expansion. The company may also need to consider an acquisition over the next year to broaden its product range. However, increasing manufacturing capacity takes time. Hurlston said building new production facilities typically requires three to five years. He added that hyperscalers were willing to provide funding commitments that could help suppliers manage some of the risks associated with rapid expansion. Optical stocks gain as AI infrastructure spending grows. Lumentum and other optical component makers have benefited from the broader AI infrastructure investment boom, although concerns about rising costs, debt and competition have made some investors more cautious. The company's shares have gained 171% year to date. Coherent shares have risen 55%, while Applied Optoelectronics has advanced 66%. Analyst sentiment on Lumentum remains positive overall. According to TipRanks data, 14 of 18 analysts covering Lumentum rate it a Buy, while the remaining four rate it a Hold. Supply constraints could also affect the sector if the US restricts new Chinese optical transceiver models. Chinese manufacturers account for roughly two-thirds of global high-speed AI optical transceiver supply, according to Counterpoint Research. Hurlston said the US would need to balance national security concerns against the risk of disrupting supply chains. Meanwhile, Lumentum faces the challenge of expanding production quickly enough to serve customers as demand for AI infrastructure continues to grow. Lumentum (LITE) stock at $1,085: Bull $1,400, Bear $920 after Bernstein's $1,220 call.

Lumentum (LITE) stock at $1,085: Bull $1,400, Bear $920 after Bernstein's $1,220 call. Updated 3 October 2026. Lumentum (LITE) closed at $1,085.42 on Friday 2 October, up 3.79 percent on the day, after touching an all-time high of $1,085.75 (StockAnalysis; Investing.com). Over two sessions the stock gained 11.8 percent from its $971.26 close on 30 September. Verdict: the move rests on real numbers - revenue more than doubled last quarter and the current-quarter guide is higher again - but the shares now trade above the average analyst target, so the remaining upside depends on the most bullish desks, led by Citi at $1,400 and Bernstein at $1,220, being right about fiscal 2028. Key facts. * Friday close: $1,085.42, +$39.64 (+3.79 percent), on 4.64 million shares (StockAnalysis, 2 October 2026). * Thursday close: $1,045.78, +7.67 percent, on 7.46 million shares (StockAnalysis, 1 October 2026). The bigger day was Thursday, not Friday. * Bernstein: analyst Daniel Zhu initiated coverage at Outperform with a $1,220 target on 30 September, applying 35 times to an estimated $35 of fiscal 2028 EPS (MarketBeat). * Citi: Papa Sylla raised his target to $1,400 from $1,200 on 28 September, the highest on the Street (MarketBeat). * Consensus: Moderate Buy from 23 analysts, average target $1,073.25 - below Friday's close (MarketBeat). * Last quarter (fiscal Q4 2026): revenue $1.01 billion, up 109.3 percent; non-GAAP EPS $3.23 (Lumentum 8-K exhibit 99.1, 11 August 2026). * Current-quarter guide (fiscal Q1 2027): revenue $1.225 - $1.275 billion, non-GAAP EPS $4.05 - $4.35. * One-year return: about 560 percent (Investing.com, 2 October 2026). What moved Lumentum this week. The rally started on Wednesday 30 September, when Sanford C. Bernstein began covering the stock. Bernstein's argument, as summarised by MarketBeat and Investing.com, is that optical and networking suppliers are structural winners in the AI infrastructure buildout, and that Lumentum can keep its share of industry economics as data-center switches move to higher speeds, including against the push toward continuous-wave laser transceivers. Bernstein started Ciena and Arista Networks at Outperform in the same report. Investing.com listed three further factors behind Thursday's 7.67 percent gain: reports that Washington is scrutinising Chinese-made optical transceivers, which would tighten supply for non-Chinese makers; Lumentum's announced speaking slots at the 2026 OCP Global Summit on external laser sources, VCSELs and optical circuit switching; and a sector move after Coherent unveiled its PhotonLink platform. On Friday the buying continued across optics names and Lumentum set a new intraday record. The numbers underneath. Lumentum's last reported quarter, the three months to late June, produced $1.01 billion of revenue against $480.7 million a year earlier, an increase of 109.3 percent. Non-GAAP gross margin was 50.4 percent and non-GAAP operating margin 36.6 percent. Non-GAAP EPS was $3.23; Investing.com put the beat at $0.26 a share versus consensus. Full fiscal 2026 revenue was $3.01 billion, up 83.2 percent. On a GAAP basis the quarter showed a loss of $84.65 a share. The company attributes that to a $7.8 billion non-cash charge on the extinguishment of debt, not to operations - but anyone screening on reported earnings will see a loss. The guide for the quarter now under way is $1.225 billion to $1.275 billion of revenue, a non-GAAP operating margin of 39.5 to 40.5 percent, and non-GAAP EPS of $4.05 to $4.35. Lumentum reports that quarter in early November. Valuation: where the price sits. Annualising the midpoint of the current-quarter EPS guide gives about $16.80 a share. At $1,085.42 the stock trades at roughly 65 times that run rate (its arithmetic). Bernstein's $1,220 target is built on a different base - 35 times its $35 fiscal 2028 estimate - which assumes earnings roughly double again from the current run rate within two fiscal years. Investing.com's InvestingPro model flagged the stock as trading above its fair value estimate on Friday, and listed TD Cowen among the Hold ratings. The same report put the spread of recent targets at $820 to $1,200; MarketBeat's full list runs from a stale $240 low to Citi's $1,400. Lumentum stock scenarios: bull, base and bear. | Scenario | LITE level | What has to happen | Anchor | | Bear | ~$920 | The week's gains unwind: the transceiver-policy reports fade, optics peers give back the Coherent-led move, and the market waits for November's print. The $921.32 close on 28 September, the last session before Bernstein's initiation and the 11.8 percent two-day run (StockAnalysis). | | Base | $1,075 - $1,220 | Lumentum delivers inside its $1.225 - $1.275 billion guide in November and the stock trades between consensus and Bernstein's target. MarketBeat consensus $1,073.25; Bernstein's $1,220 (Daniel Zhu, 30 September). | | Bull | ~$1,400 | Revenue beats the top of the guide, margins pass 40 percent, and analysts move fiscal 2028 estimates above $35 a share. Citi's $1,400 target (Papa Sylla, raised 28 September). | The bear case sits about 15 percent below Friday's close and the bull case about 29 percent above it. Rosenblatt's Mike Genovese ($1,300, reiterated 23 September) and Deutsche Bank ($1,200, initiated 31 August) sit between the base and bull levels. What to watch next. * Monday's open. Friday closed 33 cents below the intraday record. A hold above $1,045.78, Thursday's close, keeps the breakout intact. * Transceiver policy. Any formal US action on Chinese-made optical modules would firm up the supply argument behind Thursday's move. * OCP Global Summit. Lumentum's sessions on external laser sources and optical circuit switching are where customers hear the product roadmap. * Fiscal Q1 2027 results (early November). The test of the $1.225 - $1.275 billion guide and of the 39.5 - 40.5 percent margin. * Peers. Lumentum moved with Coherent, Ciena and smaller names such as Applied Optoelectronics - FinanceFeeds ran the AAOI bull and bear case in August. Quick take: Lumentum's week was an analyst-and-sector story layered on top of a business whose revenue more than doubled in a year. The fundamentals justify interest. The price already sits above the average target, so the case from here is a fiscal 2028 case - Bernstein's $35 of EPS and Citi's $1,400 - and the first hard check on it arrives with the November quarter. Faq. Why did Lumentum stock go up this week? Bernstein initiated coverage at Outperform with a $1,220 target on 30 September. On 1 October Investing.com also cited reports of US scrutiny of Chinese-made optical transceivers, Lumentum's OCP Global Summit appearances and a sector move after Coherent's PhotonLink launch. The stock rose 7.67 percent on Thursday and 3.79 percent on Friday. What did Lumentum close at on Friday? $1,085.42 on 2 October 2026, up $39.64 (3.79 percent), according to StockAnalysis. The intraday all-time high was $1,085.75. What is Bernstein's price target for Lumentum? $1,220, with an Outperform rating, set on 30 September 2026 by analyst Daniel Zhu. It applies a 35 times multiple to an estimated $35 of fiscal 2028 EPS. What is the highest analyst target on LITE? Citi's $1,400, raised from $1,200 on 28 September 2026. MarketBeat's consensus average is $1,073.25 across 23 analysts. How fast is Lumentum growing? Fiscal Q4 2026 revenue was $1.01 billion, up 109.3 percent year on year, and full fiscal 2026 revenue was $3.01 billion, up 83.2 percent. The company guided fiscal Q1 2027 revenue to $1.225 - $1.275 billion. Why did Lumentum report a GAAP loss? The GAAP loss of $84.65 a share in fiscal Q4 2026 reflects a $7.8 billion non-cash charge on debt extinguishment, according to the company's results release. Non-GAAP EPS was $3.23. Is Lumentum stock overvalued? Views differ. The stock trades at about 65 times its annualised current-quarter EPS guide (its arithmetic) and above the consensus target, and InvestingPro flagged it as above fair value. Bernstein and Citi argue fiscal 2028 earnings support higher prices. Sources: StockAnalysis (daily closes and volumes, 21 September - 2 October 2026); Investing.com (1 October drivers, 2 October all-time high, one-year return, InvestingPro fair value flag, target spread and TD Cowen rating); MarketBeat (Bernstein, Citi, Rosenblatt, Deutsche Bank and Evercore rating actions; consensus rating and average target); Lumentum Holdings fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 results, Form 8-K exhibit 99.1, filed with the SEC on 11 August 2026 (revenue, margins, EPS, guidance, debt extinguishment charge).
