In this individual contributor role, you will be on the frontline of OVO's security. You'll lead the reduction of our attack surface through technical leadership of a consolidated identity and access roadmap and highly automated amplification loops for security exposure management. This work is pivotal to maintaining a proactive and resilient posture, collaborating closely with engineering, procurement, risk and security teams across OVO to build better observability, and deterministic and non-deterministic workflows to better defend our mission to transition to a zero-carbon future.

This role in a nutshell:

As a Principal Security Engineer (Attack Surface Management) at OVO, you will be the key technical leader responsible for shaping the enterprise-wide strategy for zero trust access, attack surface observability and security weakness amplification workflows. This involves deep hands-on expertise, driving the innovation of exposure management practices, guiding architectural decisions for zero trust access and data loss prevention controls, and leading the way in solving complex, emerging security challenges. You will ensure OVO maintains a proactive and automated defence posture, setting the direction for critical security initiatives, and championing the integration of security standards embedded in configs and code and near miss retros to improve our resilience. You will be recognised as a trusted authority in your field, particularly in building automated, AI-enabled attack surface reduction workflows, leading critical vulnerability remediation incidents and leading complex control improvement initiatives.

Your key outcomes will be:

Weakness management:
- Lead and execute security defect discovery operations, vulnerability management (VM), remediation governance, and recurrence prevention across the enterprise with the aim of continuously improving compliance with policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Drive organisational and technical change by defining and implementing changes where required to internal processes & tooling to enhance proactive security controls.
Identity-focused access security:
- Lead the development, revision, implementation and monitoring of security IAM policies, processes and related tooling across OVO.
- The principal SME and strategic leader for IAM, defining and developing policy, influencing major strategic tech decisions, governs implementation of those solutions.
- Defines enterprise identity and access management and governance strategy.
Supply chain security:
- Champions and is a catalyst for improving secure supply chain management controls.
- Minimises the cost of meeting third party risk management compliance while developing strategies to measure and reduce supply chain risk reduction.
- Utilises principal-level expertise and perspectives to influence vendor relationships and security of third-party contracts.
Security risk treatment prioritisation:
- Serve as a trusted challenger and SME, including to senior stakeholders, on trade-offs that appear in designing enterprise-level security systems that carefully balance risk appetite and conflicting priorities (e.g. cost, speed, rigour).
- Able to innovate with more efficient and effective ways to protect, detect, respond and recover from security threats.
- Coaches others in security architecture.
- Defines attack path mapping frameworks that scale and can align organisational risks and mitigation priorities.
- Directly influence OVO’s core model architecture with security best-practice in mind, utilising engineering-first approaches to solve complex security problems.

Free electricity? The smart meter schemes paying households to use electricity. July 02, 2026 With the recent OFGEM price cap rise, energy markets remaining volatile and household bills still painfully high, you are probably looking for any realistic way to reduce your energy costs. Now, some households are finding an unexpected solution and getting paid to use electricity. Across the UK, energy suppliers are expanding schemes that offer free electricity, cashback and discounted rates when renewable energy production is high. In some cases, you can effectively be rewarded for running appliances, charging your electric car or heating water during periods when the grid has surplus power. Discover more electricity prices It is one of the few genuinely positive developments in the energy market right now. The shift is being driven by Britain's growing reliance on renewable energy, particularly wind power. When conditions are especially windy, the UK can generate more electricity than consumers actually need. Traditionally, the National Energy System Operator (NESO) would pay wind farms to reduce output to prevent oversupply. Now, suppliers are increasingly trying to solve that problem by encouraging you to use the excess electricity instead. The result is a growing number of "flexibility schemes" designed to reward you for shifting when you use power. How the schemes work. Most energy suppliers already run programmes that notify you when electricity is free or significantly cheaper for a short period. You can then use that window to charge an electric vehicle, run your washing machine, use the dishwasher or heat your water tank. The offers are usually linked to periods of high renewable generation and lower overall demand. Other schemes work slightly differently and reward you for reducing electricity use during busy periods, helping suppliers ease pressure on the grid. In both cases, the principle is the same: if you can use electricity more flexibly, you may be able to reduce your bills. How you can access the schemes. In most cases, you will need a smart meter with half-hourly readings enabled. You should then check whether your supplier offers agile tariffs, EV charging tariffs or flexibility reward programmes. Major suppliers including Octopus Energy, Ovo, EDF and British Gas have all launched versions of these schemes. Platforms such as uSwitch now allow you to join certain flexibility programmes regardless of who currently supplies your energy. In some cases, you can connect your smart meter and receive alerts about upcoming energy-saving or cashback events while staying on your existing tariff. That makes these schemes far more accessible than many consumers realise, particularly if you want to test the potential savings without committing to a completely new energy deal. Are there any drawbacks? If you want to maximise the benefits from flexibility schemes, you will usually save more if you can shift larger amounts of electricity use to cheaper periods. That means households with electric vehicles, smart plugs, home batteries or automated heating systems often see the biggest rewards because they can more easily charge devices or run appliances when electricity prices fall. However, buying that technology can be expensive, and you may not save enough immediately to justify major upgrades purely for the schemes themselves. Most flexibility programmes also rely on smart meters and half-hourly usage data. You will usually need to agree to more detailed energy monitoring so suppliers can track when you use electricity and calculate rewards accurately. While suppliers say the data is only used to manage discounts and payments, you may still feel uncomfortable sharing more detailed information about your household energy patterns. Some tariffs also carry more risk than traditional fixed-rate deals. Agile and tracker tariffs can offer extremely cheap electricity during periods of high renewable generation, but prices can also rise sharply when wholesale markets become volatile, particularly during periods of geopolitical tension or energy supply disruption. That means you should understand exactly how the tariff works before moving away from the stability of a fixed-rate deal. There is also a practical consideration, in that, flexibility schemes work best if you can adapt when you use electricity. If your household relies heavily on energy during busy evening periods or you have less flexibility around your daily routine, your savings may be smaller. Why this still matters. Despite the drawbacks, these schemes highlight a major shift in how your energy bills may work in future. As more renewable power is added to the grid, suppliers increasingly need consumers to help balance supply and demand more efficiently. That means electricity pricing is likely to become far more dynamic, with costs changing depending on demand, weather conditions and renewable generation. If you are willing to adapt, that could create genuine opportunities to reduce your bills at a time when many households need savings wherever they can find them, and unlike many recent stories about rising energy costs, this is one area where you may finally be able to turn market volatility to your advantage. Energy regulator Ofgem said it had closed its investigation into the supplier for its process failures that could have put vulnerable prepayment meter (PPM) customers at risk. The regulator's investigation concluded that OVO's inadequate monitoring of PPM customers, including those on the Priority Services Register (PSR), led to breaches of Ofgem's rules designed to protect customers in vulnerable situations. It said this "exposed consumers to a clear risk of harm". In recognition of Ofgem's findings, Ovo, founded by entrepreneur Stephen Fitzpatrick, has agreed to a settlement package. This includes a £7m payment to Ofgem's Voluntary Redress Fund and providing a £3.4m package of credit and debt relief for some of its most vulnerable customers, in lieu of compensation. Ofgem said customers who are due payments will be contacted by OVO Energy and do not need to take any action. OVO is also in the process of paying £1.1m to customers in the Scottish Highlands and Islands following compliance engagement. This identified that some rural customers did not have appropriate access to engineer support during the period from 1st January 2022 and 1st April 2024. OVO, during the investigation, undertook remedial actions to support vulnerable customers, including welfare visits for customers who had disconnected for more than 72 hours, and not responded to any communication during that peri Cathryn Scott, director of Market Oversight and Enforcement for Ofgem, said: "It is clear that OVO fell short in its support of vulnerable PPM customers, and it's right that they've taken action to improve their processes. "Prepayment meters are a positive choice for many customers, helping them stay in control of their energy use and reporting high levels of satisfaction - but it's not suitable for everyone and strong monitoring must be in place to protect vulnerable consumers. "This investigation forms part of Ofgem's wider work to raise standards across the energy market and strengthen consumer protections, challenging suppliers to do more to identify and support customers in difficulty. "Anyone worried about paying their bill should contact their supplier as early as possible to access the support available and discuss the options that suit their circumstances." An OVO spokesperson said: "Ofgem's investigation examined how we supported prepayment meter customers between 2018 and 2024. We accept that some of our historic processes fell short of expected standards, and we are sorry for that. "Keeping our customers safe and supported is hugely important to us and we recognise there were areas where we needed to do better. "We have since worked to strengthen our policies and systems, including a new Safe and Reasonably Practicable (SARP) policy, strengthening how we identify and support our vulnerable customers. This settlement reflects both those historic issues and the improvements we have made." The company said that customers who may be eligible for a goodwill payment will be contacted directly by OVO, adding they do not need to take any action in response to this announcement.

Regulator finds inadequate monitoring by firm could have exposed vulnerable customers 'to clear risk of harm' Ovo Energy has agreed to pay more than £10m after the energy regulator for Great Britain, Ofgem, found a lack of monitoring of vulnerable customers with prepayment meters (PPMs) could have exposed them to a "clear risk of harm". Ofgem found that Ovo did not adequately monitor its PPM customers, including those on the priority services register, leading to breaches of the watchdog's rules designed to protect customers in vulnerable situations. In response to the findings, Ovo agreed to a settlement package including a £7m payment to Ofgem's voluntary redress fund as well as a £3.4m package of credit and debt relief for some of its most vulnerable customers, which the regulator said was in lieu of compensation. Any Ovo customers due to receive credit or debt write-off payments would be contacted by Ovo and do not need to take any action, Ofgem added. In addition, Ovo - set up by the former Tory donor Stephen Fitzpatrick - is in the process of paying £1.1m to customers in the Scottish Highlands and islands, after compliance work by the regulator found that some rural customers did not have appropriate access to engineer support for more than two years, from 1 January 2022 to 1 April 2024. During Ofgem's investigation into Ovo, the company took some action to support vulnerable customers, including making welfare visits to people who had been disconnected from their energy supply for more than 72 hours and who had not responded to any communications during that time. In some cases, customers who had run out of credit were not contacted by the energy supplier. Ofgem's investigation looked into Ovo's treatment of its existing PPM customers rather than customers having PPMs installed without their consent. "It is clear that Ovo fell short in its support of vulnerable PPM customers, and it's right that they've taken action to improve their processes," said Cathryn Scott, the director of market oversight and enforcement for Ofgem. "Prepayment meters are a positive choice for many customers, helping them stay in control of their energy use and reporting high levels of satisfaction - but it's not suitable for everyone and strong monitoring must be in place to protect vulnerable consumers." Ovo said in a statement that it accepted that some of its historic processes fell short of the expected standards. It added that since 2024 it had significantly improved its policies, systems and training, and how its policies were followed, including implementing a new policy around how it identified and supported vulnerable customers. An Ovo spokesperson said: "Ofgem's investigation examined how we supported prepayment meter customers between 2018 and 2024. We accept that some of our historic processes fell short of expected standards, and we are sorry for that. "Keeping our customers safe and supported is hugely important to us and we recognise there were areas where we needed to do better." Ovo's settlement is the latest blow for the company, which was fined £2.7m in January after failing to pass on government support payments for winter energy bills to thousands of vulnerable customers during the energy cost crisis. The German energy group E.ON said last month it had agreed to buy Ovo in a deal that would create Britain's biggest gas and electricity supplier by number of households served.
