Honda to enter ute market with rebadged Mitsubishi Triton.

Honda to enter ute market with rebadged Mitsubishi Triton. Honda is joining the body-on-frame ute scene with more than a little help from its friends at Mitsubishi. Thu at 7:27 am Journalist Honda has confirmed it's working on a new Mitsubishi Triton-based ute it will sell in Asia. The two automakers signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday night, with Mitsubishi to supply Honda with utes out of its factory in Laem Chabang, Thailand. There's no word yet on the name of Honda's new ute, but the company has confirmed it will go on sale across the ASEAN region in 2028. At the time of writing, there are 11 full members of the regional grouping: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. It's unclear if other markets will receive the Honda-ified Triton, but a Yomiuri Shimbun report earlier this month indicated the automaker is giving it some consideration. Given the tight timeframe, it's likely the Honda ute won't differ too much from the Triton. Changes will probably be limited to a new grille and bumpers, revised badging, and, maybe, new headlights and tail-lights. Nissan, which currently owns around 24 per cent of Mitsubishi Motors, launched a new Triton-based Navara earlier this year. Visually the two are distinguished by unique front fascias, headlights and tail-lights. According to Honda, this arrangement allows the automaker to "enhance its product lineup quickly and efficiently", while also allowing Mitsubishi to "increase production volume and improve capacity utilisation" at its Laem Chabang plant. There's no word yet on how many Triton-based utes Honda is looking to sell. This model-sharing deal between Honda and Mitsubishi is the first time the two automakers have worked together in such a manner, but it's not the first time Honda has rebadged body-on-frame vehicles from other manufacturers. In the 1990s, the company's US arm sold the Indiana-built Isuzu Rodeo (aka Holden Frontera) as the Honda Passport. The contemporary Isuzu Trooper wore many names around the world, and while it was sold in Australia as the Holden Jackaroo, it was also the Honda Horizon in Japan and the Acura SLX in the States. Around the same time, Land Rover supplied the first-generation Discovery to Honda's dealers in Japan where the SUV was sold as the Crossroad. Honda also rebadged the Isuzu TF (aka Holden Rodeo) for Thailand as the Tourmaster from 1996 to 1998. Today's announcement follows the failed merger between Honda and Nissan, which was announced in late December 2024 and officially called off in February 2025, with Nissan blaming Honda for changing the terms of the deal from a marriage of equals to a takeover. Despite this, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi agreed to keep on discussing areas of collaboration. Nissan is the largest single shareholder in Mitsubishi Motors, and once had a controlling 34 per cent stake in the firm. At the beginning of September, Honda and Nissan announced they will work together on core electronic control units (ECUs) and software for a new Electrical/Electronic (E/E) architecture that will underpin their next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs), the first of which will appear around 2030. Earlier reports indicated the two automakers are considering working together on models for the North American market, likely larger vehicles that would be mainly sold in the US, Canada, Mexico and the Middle East. It has also been suggested Nissan will also supply Honda with a version of the Frontier pickup truck. Mitsubishi has already confirmed it will soon begin sales of a rebadged Frontier in the States. The only ute in Honda's lineup right now is the Ridgeline, which is essentially a monocoque Pilot SUV with a tray grafted on the back. Derek Fung. Journalist. Nissan expands Kobe autonomous pilot, eyes paid service in 2027.

Nissan expands Kobe autonomous pilot, eyes paid service in 2027. Nissan will run its fiscal 2026 autonomous mobility pilot in Kobe's Nada Gogo area Dec. 8-18, adding on-demand booking and remote monitoring from Yokohama ahead of paid service in 2027. Nissan will run the fiscal year 2026 phase of its autonomous mobility service pilot program in Kobe City's Nada Gogo area from Dec. 8 to Dec. 18, the company announced on Oct. 14, and has opened applications for participants. The new phase adds a larger service area and on-demand ride booking and vehicle dispatch by smartphone. Nissan aims to launch paid service in 2027 and begin full commercial operations in the Nada Gogo area by 2030. At a glance. * Operating area: Nada Gogo area and surrounding districts, Kobe City * Period: Dec. 8-18, 2026, weekdays (Tuesday through Friday) * Vehicle: Nissan Serena-based autonomous-drive development vehicle, SAE Level 2-equivalent with a safety driver onboard * New features: Expanded service area; on-demand booking and dispatch by smartphone * Monitoring: Real time, from Nissan's Remote Operations Center in Yokohama * Targets: Paid service in 2027; full commercial operations in Nada Gogo by 2030 Why it matters: Self Drive News covered Nissan's first Kobe field test, scheduled for Jan. 19-23, 2026, in the Nada Gogo area, as well as its autonomous mobility pilot in Yokohama. A key aspect of this year's pilot is validating centralized monitoring. Nissan will monitor its Level 2 vehicles in both Yokohama, in the Minato Mirai and Kannai areas, and Kobe in real time from the Remote Operations Center in Yokohama. By validating a system that remotely monitors several operating areas from one location, the company aims to make future mobility service operations more efficient and reduce the burden on local communities that introduce such services. The program is designed to confirm how autonomous transportation can improve mobility for tourists, gain social acceptance and contribute to regional revitalization in the district, which is known for sake brewing. Four organizations are taking part: * Kobe City: Overall project administration * Nada Gogo Sake Brewers Association: Pickup and drop-off locations, and exploring integration between the autonomous mobility service and sake breweries * Moplus Inc.: Support for service operations and operational framework development * Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.: Planning and operating the pilot, and providing and operating the vehicles The pilot is being conducted under Japan's Digital Agency "Leading Project for Early Commercialization of Autonomous Driving Services" for fiscal year 2025 and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's fiscal year 2026 "Subsidy Program for Securing, Maintaining and Improving Regional Public Transportation." Nissan said it will continue running pilot programs in other regions. Nissan e-POWER wins 2026 Wards 10 Best award.

Nissan e-POWER wins 2026 Wards 10 Best award. 15 October 2026 Autosphere " Dealerships " Nissan e-POWER wins 2026 Wards 10 Best award. Nissan's e-POWER hybrid powertrain, making its North American debut in the upcoming 2027 Rogue Hybrid, has been named to the 2026 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems list. The selection of Nissan's e-POWER system for a 2026 Wards 10 Best Engines award validates transmission-free series-hybrid architecture for North American fleet operations. Nissan's e-POWER hybrid powertrain, making its North American debut in the upcoming 2027 Rogue Hybrid, has been named to the 2026 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems list. The award marks Nissan's 21st recognition by the industry panel, highlighting advancements in drivetrain engineering, torque delivery, and overall efficiency. Engineered specifically for North American driving cycles, the third-generation e-POWER system utilizes a series-hybrid setup distinct from conventional parallel hybrid crossovers. A dedicated gas engine functions solely as an onboard generator to charge the drive battery, while dual electric motors power the wheels directly. Eliminating the multi-speed transmission reduces mechanical complexity and wear, delivering linear acceleration and an estimated combined fuel rating of 6.2 L/100 km alongside single-pedal regenerative braking. For Canadian fleet managers and commercial vehicle buyers, the 2027 Rogue Hybrid provides an electrified option that eliminates charging downtime. The vehicle arrives in Canadian dealerships in late 2026 starting with the AWD SR trim, with the full lineup launching in early 2027 at a base MSRP of $39,998 CAD for the SV grade.

Mattel Brick Shop gets into the vintage Nissan game with the original Skyline GT-R.

Mattel Brick Shop gets into the vintage Nissan game with the original Skyline GT-R. The legendary boxy ancestor to the Godzilla GT-R gets the building-block treatment. * JDM enthusiasts are finally getting a brick building set of a boxy hero car. * The first to wear the Skyline GT-R badge, the full-size version of this fierce little coupe racked up the victories in Japanese touring car racing. * The set comes with additional parts to customize the car for racing, metal pieces, and a matching Hot Wheels model. The enthusiast nickname for the KPGC-10 chassis Skyline GT-R is hakosuka: "hako" for "box" and "suka" as an abbreviation of the Japanese pronunciation of Skyline. It's literally the boxiest of the Skyline breed, and as such, you have to wonder why no one has ever made a model out of interlocking bricks. Only the Volvo 240 would be a more suitable subject for the medium. Well, wonder no longer, because Mattel's Brick Shop has finally given vintage JDM iron fans just what they wanted. Released in a hefty 1:16 scale, the model is made up of 833 pieces, can be customized for road or race spec, and of course comes with a matching Hot Wheels die-cast to go with. For sale near you. It's also the first Nissan to be built in partnership with Mattel Brick Shop, which means there may be more models in the pipeline down the road. A classic Datsun 510 or 240Z? Caranddriver'll just have to wait and see. If you're not up to speed on what made the first Skyline GT-R so special, here's a quick summary. As part of the 1960s homogenization of the Japanese auto industry, Nissan had snapped up Prince, a higher-end manufacturer. The former Prince engineers operated a bit like the specialists within Porsche that build its GT cars, and they were strongly interested in motorsport. First, those engineers pulled off the classic trick of taking the engine from one of their larger sedans and stuffing it into the nose of a mid-sizer. This move created the inline-six-powered Skyline 2000GT, which had some initial success. The C10 generation of Skyline received further sorting out, and in 1969, Nissan launched the 2000 GT-R, first as a sedan and later a coupe. These cars were enormously competitive in Japanese touring car racing, with 50 racing victories by 1972. Part of the hakosuka"s heritage is the internal rivalry between Nissan's engineers and those who had originally worked for Prince. The GT-R's 2.0-liter inline-six was also installed in a rare version of the contemporary 240Z called the Z432, and these competed directly against the Skylines. However, the team formerly working for Prince kept all the best racing parts for themselves. In the case of this scale model, you can do your own pint-size wrenching. There are two sets of interchangeable wheels, a racing splitter and headlight covers, and even an external oil cooler. A 1970s Skyline GT-R on black Watanabe racing wheels is as iconic overseas as an orange Mustang Boss 302 would be here with the latter's Trans-Am racing history. The set also comes with functioning doors, an opening hood, and working steering, and the tires are even actual Yokohamas under license. For $59.99, the set seems like the usual solid offering Mattel Brick Shop is becoming known for, and it should certainly please JDM enthusiasts in the audience. Availability starts in January 2027.
