About the job

Requirements
  • A degree in Engineering, specifically Software, Electrical, Computer, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Internship, co-op, or up to a few years of experience in test, embedded software, or controls; a new graduate with a strong lab or project record qualifies.
  • Evidence of identifying failure cases that obvious tests missed.
  • Experience working on a bench, in software-in-the-loop, or in hardware-in-the-loop, including writing or changing tests.
  • Networking fundamentals sufficient to trace issues from the application toward the wire, with willingness to debug on real hardware.
  • Experience with one industrial protocol, or the ability to quickly learn an unfamiliar protocol, such as Modbus, DNP3, or SCADA.
  • Ability to read code and modify a test harness; the stack includes Go, Rust, and Python, none of which is mandatory.
  • Ability to write automated tests; the team uses pytest.
Responsibilities
  • Run software-centric software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing for the site-level energy controller on embedded Linux, covering settings, telemetry, redundancy/failover, and utility/SCADA communications.
  • Propose automation cases for controller changes, including restarts, partial writes, timed-out peers, and split state, beyond happy-path testing.
  • Build automated software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop regression testing with System Integration against controller builds.
  • Validate Modbus, DNP3, and SCADA behavior on the bench, including timeouts, bad frames, and peer dropouts, using real equipment or simulation.
  • Debug the shared bench by tracing failures from the application through TCP/IP to the port and touching hardware when needed to distinguish software defects from wiring issues.
  • Trace defects below the application far enough to hand off a reproducible case.

About the company

Tesla makes electric cars and batteries that store power for homes and utilities, and it develops self-driving software and humanoid robots. In 2023, its Model Y became the first electric vehicle to rank as the world's best-selling car. Buyers order the Model 3 sedan, Model Y SUV, or Cybertruck pickup directly from Tesla instead of through dealers, and they charge on its Supercharger fast-charging network. It also sells Megapack and Powerwall batteries, runs a robotaxi service, and charges drivers a monthly fee for self-driving software that still needs their supervision. Tesla was founded in 2003, with Elon Musk as its lead early investor and a recognized co-founder, and it is based in Austin, Texas.

What believers are saying

  • Sales are growing again: revenue rose 26% to $28.2 billion in the June 2026 quarter, after falling 3% in 2025.
  • Software adds income beyond cars: paid users of its supervised self-driving feature rose 56% to 1.48 million by June 2026.
  • Hiring is back: Tesla's headcount grew 7% to 134,785 by December 2025, after layoffs shrank it 11% in 2024.

What critics are saying

  • Growth isn't reaching profit: operating profit fell 57% to $398 million in the June 2026 quarter, a 1.4% margin.
  • Alphabet's Waymo is far ahead in robotaxis: Texas records in May 2026 listed 577 Waymo vehicles to Tesla's 42.
  • Stock grants have lost value: Tesla shares fell 17% in 2026 through October 8, after a December 2025 record.

What makes Tesla unique

  • Energy storage punches above its weight: Tesla's energy unit made 13% of 2025 sales but 22% of gross profit.
  • Tesla set the charging standard: Ford, GM and all major EV sellers in North America adopted its plug by 2024.
  • Robots are written into Musk's pay: his 2025 award sets goals of 1 million humanoid robots and 1 million robotaxis.

Tesla cuts 2026 capex guidance to $20B from $25B as Optimus ramp-up slows, shares slip 4%

Tesla cut its full-year capital expenditure guidance to about $20 billion from more than $25 billion, and its shares reversed early after-hours gains to trade 4% lower during the third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday. Revenue was $28.0 billion, against an analyst estimate of $28.3 billion. Adjusted earnings were $0.48 per share, above the expected $0.45. Both figures fell from a year earlier. Chief financial officer Vaibhav Taneja said Tesla secured capacity to borrow up to $30 billion but plans no draws this calendar year. Free cash flow was over $1.5 billion, and cash and investments exceeded $45 billion. Elon Musk said reaching 20,000 Optimus robots a week will take "probably at least a year, maybe a little longer." He now hopes for EU-wide approval of full self-driving within a few months, later than the earlier October target.

Tesla sets December 3 annual meeting with Musk's $1T pay package up for vote

Tesla has set its 2026 annual meeting for December 3, board chair Robyn Denholm said in a letter. Shareholders will vote on board seats, including those of Elon Musk and Denholm, and on Musk's 2025 compensation plan, which could pay as much as $1 trillion. The meeting follows a mixed year. Third-quarter deliveries fell about 2.1% to 486,532 vehicles, and 2025 revenue dropped roughly 3% to $94.83 billion. Net income attributable to common shareholders fell about 46% to $3.79 billion. Tesla reports third-quarter earnings on October 21, which analysts see as likelier to move the stock. Shares slipped about 6.8% last week, then recovered by almost the same amount. Analysts' consensus rating is "Moderate Buy," with an average price target of $401.36.
