About the job

Requirements
  • At least 14 years of experience in software development engineering.
  • At least 6 years of experience designing, building, and operating complex distributed system architectures, including successful deployment of highly available and fault-tolerant systems such as systems with 99.9% uptime.
  • At least 8 years of experience with at least two programming languages such as Java, Python, or Go, including production-level coding for distributed systems.
  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Expert-level algorithmic thinking to architect efficient and scalable solutions for complex problems.
  • Deep expertise in API development, including advanced API protocols or architectural patterns.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems software principles, including distributed consensus or fault-tolerance mechanisms.
  • Ability to design and implement high-availability strategies for critical distributed systems.
  • Experience with LLM observability and tracing tools such as LangSmith, and familiarity with LangChain or similar agent-orchestration frameworks.
  • Extensive experience with large-scale data-processing technologies and frameworks.
  • Deep understanding of large-scale systems design principles, including distributed data management and scalability strategies.
  • Strong understanding of system-security principles and best practices for securing complex distributed environments.
  • Ability to lead collaboration within and across distributed software-development teams and drive architectural direction.
  • Strong skills in technical-writing documentation and presentation.
Responsibilities
  • Own the technical vision and architecture for distributed tracing as a first-class pillar of the Observability Platform, built on ClickHouse and/or Grafana Tempo and backed by a big-data pipeline running on AWS.
  • Architect and build the distributed tracing platform on ClickHouse and Grafana Tempo for multi-petabyte-scale ingestion and sub-second interactive query performance.
  • Own the big-data pipeline feeding tracing data, including Kafka-based ingestion, Spark or Flink stream and batch processing, Iceberg-on-S3 storage, schema design, partitioning, compaction, and lifecycle management.
  • Drive performance and scaling across ingestion and query paths through storage-format optimization, compression strategy, partitioning and indexing, and query-engine tuning under production load.
  • Lead high-availability and disaster-recovery design for tracing services, including multi-region and multi-availability-zone resilience, failover, backup and restore, and recovery time and recovery point objectives.
  • Design the platform's security architecture, including authentication and authorization for multi-tenant data access across ingestion and query layers.
  • Own operational excellence for distributed tracing, including monitoring, logging, alerting, capacity planning, and participation in an on-call rotation.
  • Evaluate and introduce open-source and cloud-native technologies that improve platform scalability, cost efficiency, or capability.
  • Extend distributed tracing to LLM and agentic workflows using LangSmith and LangChain, enabling observability into multi-step agent execution, tool calls, and prompt/response chains.
  • Publish platform best practices, mentor engineers across DPOE and partner teams, and act as a technical thought leader for the observability and data stack.
  • Set technical direction with minimal oversight while aligning with broader platform strategy.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree, such as an MS in Computer Science, Distributed Systems, or a related field, is strongly preferred.

Invisors launches PayBill Suite to streamline staffing firms' pay and billing on Workday

Invisors, a Workday Services Partner, is expanding PayBill Suite, a set of Marketplace Apps for staffing firms that run on Workday. The apps, built through the Built on Workday Partner Program, handle Time-to-Pay and Time-to-Bill cycles. The Contract Management app manages the contract terms and rules that set pay and bill rates. Other apps cover customer time approval, mass time loads, unit-based billing-pay, multi-rate pay, and pay when paid. Invisors says the suite automates processes, cuts integrations, and improves data integrity. Steve Sexton, professional services lead at Invisors, said finance teams are moving from manual reconciliation to more accurate, timely invoicing and faster audit response. The work helped Invisors win Workday's 2025 Partner of the Year for Innovation.

Workday CFO Zane Rowe: AI's value goes beyond ROI and output

Workday chief financial officer Zane Rowe says finance chiefs should judge AI by better work and decisions, not output alone. Return on investment still matters, he told Fortune, but so do stronger decisions, greater capacity, and improved customer value. An AI tool might help a finance team produce twice as many reports, Rowe said, but that does not make the business better. The real test is whether the team uncovers insights, anticipates problems, and advises leaders. Workday is expanding Decision Intelligence to HR and finance, letting teams model scenarios such as hiring changes by region. At its Rising event, it also announced "autopilot agents" for accounting, payroll, and hiring, and a partnership with Anthropic. Rowe's tax team is developing 10 AI agents, though not all will make the cut.

Workday's second act: Bhusri returns as AI fears hit and revenue growth slows to 13%

Workday's cofounder Aneel Bhusri has returned as chief executive officer of the enterprise software firm, taking back the job in February. He had handed it to Carl Eschenbach in 2024, according to Fortune. The company, which makes human resources, finance, payroll, and planning software, faces fears that AI agents will make per-seat software obsolete. Revenue growth has slowed to 13%, and Workday has gone through several rounds of layoffs. Activist investor Elliott Management is reportedly "lurking in the wings." In 2018, Workday topped the Fortune Future 50. Its software ran critical operations for half of the Fortune 50 and more than 35% of the Fortune 500.
