Nvidia, Fortinet, Alphabet, Microsoft and Apple positioned to weather higher interest rates

The US Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points yesterday, bringing the federal funds target range to 3.75%–4.00%. This monetary tightening could pressure economic growth and compress valuations in the technology sector. However, companies with strong balance sheets, robust cash flow, and minimal dependence on external financing are better positioned to weather higher rates. Five tech stocks stand out in this regard: Nvidia, Fortinet, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Apple. Nvidia generated $24.1 billion in operating cash flow in Q2 and held roughly $56.6 billion in cash and marketable debt securities. Fortinet produced $966 million in free cash flow on $2.05 billion of Q2 revenue. Alphabet ended Q2 with approximately $242.5 billion in cash and equivalents.

OpenAI denies Apple trade secret theft, calls dispute 'a mess of Apple's own making

OpenAI has denied Apple's allegations of trade secret theft in a US District Court filing, calling the dispute "a mess of Apple's own making". Apple sued OpenAI and two former employees in July, accusing them of misappropriating trade secrets related to hardware design and manufacturing. OpenAI argued that California law permits employees to move freely between employers. Court filings reveal OpenAI has hired roughly 400 former Apple employees for its hardware initiative. The lawsuit marks an escalation between the companies, who partnered two years ago to integrate ChatGPT into Siri. That relationship has since deteriorated as Apple shifted towards using Google's Gemini to power its redesigned Siri instead of deepening ties with OpenAI.

31% of Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio rides on Apple and Alphabet under Greg Abel

Greg Abel, who leads Berkshire Hathaway's investment strategy, has positioned approximately 31% of the firm's portfolio in two AI-related stocks: Alphabet and Apple. Alphabet represents nearly 10% of the portfolio following aggressive purchases since the third quarter of 2025. Berkshire acquired nearly 106 million shares across both tickers. Despite capital expenditures of $195 billion to $205 billion this year, Alphabet's revenue growth accelerated from 14% to 24% year-over-year, whilst Google Cloud grew 82%. The company generated $53 billion in free cash flow and trades at a 17 P/E ratio. Apple comprises just over 20% of Berkshire's holdings, though this represents a reduction from its previous 50% share. Trading at 38 times earnings, Apple now appears positioned as a hold rather than a buy. Berkshire Hathaway maintains approximately $366 billion in reserves.

HBO boss reacts to Apple TV winning more Emmy awards.

HBO boss reacts to Apple TV winning more Emmy awards. Apple TV won big at the Emmys last night, taking home more awards than any other competitor, including HBO. Here's what HBO boss Casey Bloys said in response to Apple's victory. HBO head praises Apple TV but says going against trillion-dollar company is 'a little scary' Apple TV has long been compared to HBO, with both services prioritizing quality over quantity. Apple has even been called "the new HBO" at times. Last night's Emmy awards helped add more support for that claim, with Apple TV beating out HBO, Netflix, and other contenders for the most prizes. Apple TV became the "most awarded network of the year" with 29 wins overall, including a big night for Widow's Bay. In second place: HBO with 21 wins. HBO boss Casey Bloys was asked by Deadline after the awards show for his reaction to Apple's performance. Here's what he said: DEADLINE: What did you think about Apple TV's performance and their first time finishing as the No. 1 platform at the Emmys? BLOYS: Well, I'm very happy because I think that they're very handsome competitors, Zack and Jamie. Look, we've had very formidable competitors in going back to Showtime, FX, AMC, Netflix, Amazon, so [when] Apple, everybody, keeps us on our toes, I think we do our best work. It's a little scary that they're a trillion-dollar company, but we'll continue to do what we do, which is put out the best shows that we can. Bloys has been at HBO since 2004 and became head of all programming in 2016. He's had a very successful run, and his response to Apple's win is largely gracious and congratulatory. However, the most interesting part of the quote is where he says: "It's a little scary that they're a trillion-dollar company." We don't know internal budget details for Apple TV specifically. But Apple overall certainly does have more financial leeway than the majority of its competitors - including HBO. Not so coincidentally, Paramount is trying to buy HBO (and all of Warner Bros. Discovery) in order to better compete with tech giants like Apple and Amazon. Does Apple's size automatically give it an edge? Maybe. But as plenty of networks have proven before, money is just one small part of creating beloved content. Best iPhone accessories. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. More. Ryan got his start in journalism as an Editor at MacStories, where he worked for four years covering Apple news, writing app reviews, and more. For two years he co-hosted the Adapt podcast on Relay FM, which focused entirely on the iPad. As a result, it should come as no surprise that his favorite Apple device is the iPad Pro.

The Central Consumer Protection Agency of India has escalated its probe into Apple's software warranty terms.

The Central Consumer Protection Agency of India has escalated its probe into Apple's software warranty terms. posted on Sep. 15, 2026 at 6:08 am The Central Consumer Protection Agency of India has escalated its probe into Apple's software warranty terms, reports Reuters (a subscription is required to read the article). The article says this situation is shaping up as "Apple's latest headache in a growth market where it is fast expanding iPhone manufacturing and rapidly growing market share, but also fending off accusations of breaching domestic antitrust laws." The escalated probe follows complaints that the iOS 18 update caused screen and microphone failures on some iPhones, with affected users forced to pay repair costs the regulator described as exorbitant. Apple maintains its no-warranty policy for software aligns with industry norms and that iOS 18 showed no systemic issues in India, citing only 75 complaints. The dispute centers on whether consumers should bear repair costs when a company's own software update damages devices. If Apple is found in violation, it could face fines, refund orders, or mandated changes to warranty practices. The case adds regulatory pressure as Apple expands manufacturing and market share in India. I hope you'll help support Apple ]World Today by becoming a patron.
