About the job

Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Acoustics, Audio Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of experience in audio testing, voice quality evaluation, or acoustic system validation.
  • Experience working within or alongside professional audio or acoustic test laboratories.
  • Ability to design repeatable, controlled test environments and methodologies.
  • Experience with objective measurement tools and subjective listening evaluation protocols.
  • System-level understanding and ability to isolate quality issues to specific processing stages.
  • Understanding of audio signal processing fundamentals, including frequency-domain analysis, filtering, spectral characteristics, and time-domain behavior.
  • Hands-on experience with voice quality measurement tools and standards, including POLQA, PESQ, 3QUEST, and ETSI standards.
  • Familiarity with HEAD acoustic test equipment, including measurement microphones, artificial heads (HATS), mouth simulators, and anechoic or semi-anechoic chamber setups.
  • Proficiency in Python for test automation, data analysis, audio signal processing, and framework development.
  • Experience with audio acquisition systems, DACs/ADCs, and real-time audio streaming architectures.
  • Understanding of latency measurement methodologies in real-time audio systems.
Responsibilities
  • Test and validate the performance and tuning of core voice processing blocks.
  • Execute validation under diverse acoustic conditions, speaker configurations, and signal scenarios.
  • Collaborate with algorithm teams to provide data-driven feedback for tuning and optimization.
  • Conduct objective voice quality assessments using standardized metrics, including POLQA (ITU-T P.863) and PESQ (ITU-T P.862).
  • Organize and manage subjective “golden ear” listening panels to assess voice naturalness, intelligibility, and overall quality.
  • Define evaluation criteria and scoring methodologies aligned with industry standards and internal quality benchmarks.
  • Design and execute word error rate (WER)-based testing for scenarios involving voice transcription and speech recognition.
  • Correlate WER results with upstream audio processing quality to identify degradation sources.
  • Conduct testing in specialized laboratories that replicate real-world acoustic scenarios, including moving vehicles, noisy public environments such as cafés, restaurants, and crowded spaces, windy outdoor settings, and combined environmental stressors.
  • Measure and track Time to First Word (TTFW) and round-trip audio latency.
  • Establish performance baselines and monitoring frameworks for continuous tracking across firmware and software iterations.
  • Design and maintain automated test suites to detect audio artifacts, including glitches, pops, clicks, distortions, and dropouts.
  • Build regression frameworks that validate audio quality across new firmware and software updates.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master of Science degree in Acoustics, Audio Signal Processing, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with speech recognition systems and word error rate (WER) evaluation methodologies.
  • Background in psychoacoustics or subjective audio evaluation research.
  • Experience with environmental simulation lab design and commissioning.
  • Knowledge of ITU-T P-series recommendations and ETSI test specifications.

Apple opens $1,999 iPhone Duo pre-orders on October 16 as stock hits record $347.93

Apple will open pre-orders for its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, on October 16 at 8:00 EDT. The book-style device starts at $1,999 and launches officially on October 23. Buyers can use Apple's "Get Ready" process from October 12 to choose a configuration and arrange payment and trade-in details. Reports of production issues point to limited early supply. The Duo has a 5.4-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch folding display. Apple's stock hit a record $347.93 on October 13, up about 27% this year. Apple reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16.4% year-on-year. It reports fourth-quarter results on November 2.

Chip selloff spreads from Asia to US as Apple launches smart home push and Meta unveils new AI model

A chip selloff is accelerating as pressure spreads from Asia to the US, according to Bloomberg's Ed Ludlow. Apple has released a new line of smart home devices, led by its HomeView Hub. The hub is the centrepiece of Apple's push to challenge Amazon and Google in that space. Meta has also released a new AI model, which it says has "frontier capabilities." The company is vying to take on OpenAI and Anthropic.

Apple launches smart home range with $349.95 lock, $249.95 video doorbell and thermostat

Apple has unveiled the Apple Home Collection, a smart home range that includes a smart deadbolt lock, video doorbell, thermostat, temperature sensor, and security cameras. The products go on sale in December. The devices work with HomeView, Apple's new smart home hub. Apple built them with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric, a shift for a company that has long made its own smart home accessories. The $349.95 lock supports ultra-wideband, which detects proximity more precisely than Bluetooth and could unlock the door as an authorised user approaches. The wired video doorbell costs $249.95 and sends alerts to Apple devices. A floodlight camera, priced at $399.95, combines exterior lighting with video monitoring. The range could help Apple compete with Amazon Ring and Google Nest.

Apple unveils $299 HomeView, its first smart display, with Apple Watch-style faces

Apple has announced the HomeView, its first smart display, at an event in New York City on Tuesday. The 7-inch device costs $299 and goes on sale November 13, with preorders open now. It comes in two versions, a speaker base and a wall-mounted display, both at the same price. The launch is part of Apple's effort to revive its lagging smart home ecosystem. The square screen resembles a large Apple Watch, with swipeable, customisable "faces" that show a clock, photos, weather, or Snoopy animations. Swiping up opens a home screen with apps and widgets, running on new HomeView software rather than iOS. There is no App Store, only a curated app selection, including FaceTime, Messages, Safari, and Spotify. Setup requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

Apple bets on the smart home to defend its iPhone moat against AI devices

Apple will hold a "Welcome Home" event at 9:00 ET, where it is expected to unveil smart-home devices. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the company will detail HomeView, a hub for controlling Apple devices in the home. The push targets a market where Apple has trailed Amazon and Google. It also responds to new AI hardware from rivals, including Meta's Charm device and VR glasses, and OpenAI's plans for a device with iPhone designer Jony Ive. Such products could end tech companies' reliance on the iPhone for distribution. Apple's stock is up more than 25% this year, ahead of Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft. Over the past month, Meta is up more than 11%, while Apple is up just over 2%.
