Open Door Legal provides free or low-cost legal representation to residents of the Bayview neighborhood in San Francisco, focusing on housing, family, and consumer law among other areas. It is a nonprofit funded by donations and grants, including monthly contributions from supporters called Keyholders. The organization works to help individuals navigate complex legal systems and aims to reduce homelessness and improve social justice by offering universal access to legal services. Its approach relies on community support and measured impact, including a reported 50% reduction in homelessness in its service area. The key distinction from others in the space is its award-winning track record and commitment to serving a historically marginalized community with accessible legal aid, not through charging fees but by leveraging philanthropy and grants.
