About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of direct experience in a mechanical manufacturing environment in a Supplier Development Engineer, Supply Base Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, Manufacturing Design Engineer, Supplier Industrialization Engineer, or equivalent role, including at least 2 years focused on brittle materials.
  • Experience driving global suppliers to establish and qualify brittle-material manufacturing processes from new product introduction to mass production, including Design for Manufacturing reviews that identify brittle-specific risks before build start.
  • Hands-on knowledge of ceramic, sapphire crystal, and glass manufacturing processes, including ceramic injection molding, sintering, computer numerical control grinding, lapping and polishing, edge chamfering, laser cutting and drilling, and coating adhesion on brittle substrates; plus failure analysis (fractography), design of experiments, and dimensional capability (Cpk and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing).
  • Working understanding of brittle fracture mechanics, relevant strength and reliability testing (including 4-point bend, ring-on-ring, and thermal shock/cycling), and cosmetic defect standards for ceramics, sapphire crystal, or glass.
  • Ability to travel internationally up to approximately 15% of the time.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate challenges clearly to leadership and cross-functional partners.

Responsibilities

  • Define processes for ceramic, sapphire crystal, glass, and other brittle components that meet design and operational requirements.
  • Partner with Quality Engineers, Material Engineers, and Product/Industrial Designers to optimize brittle-material component design and manufacturing for cost, cosmetics, reliability, and fracture resistance.
  • Use data, including Cpk, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and strength/fracture testing, to guide process decisions and influence product and industrial design, part tolerances, and brittle-substrate specifications.
  • Drive global suppliers to establish and optimize manufacturing processes for ceramic, sapphire crystal, and glass components, including ceramic injection molding, sintering, precision computer numerical control grinding, lapping and polishing, edge chamfering, laser cutting and drilling, and coating adhesion on brittle substrates; ensure quality and resolve production issues.
  • Lead Design for Manufacturing reviews and set brittle-material acceptance criteria for chip/crack defects, edge integrity, and cosmetic standards for tooling and processes entering development builds and production ramp.
  • Develop and document processes, parameters, consumables, and secondary-operation requirements, including grinding, polishing, coating, and laser marking, to meet specifications.
  • Provide leadership and support at manufacturing sites during development and production ramp, resolving brittle-material issues such as cracking, chipping, warpage, and thermal shock failures with cross-functional teams.

Desired Qualifications

  • Direct experience with ceramics, sapphire crystal, or glass on highly cosmetic parts or health wearable devices.

About the Company

Oura

Makes smart rings for sleep and recovery

Oura designs smart rings and a companion app for people who want to understand their sleep, activity, stress, and recovery. Its ring measures signals such as heart rate, movement, and temperature while fitting into daily life without a screen on the wrist. The app turns these daily measurements into sleep and readiness scores, compares changes with a personal baseline, and suggests habits that support rest and activity. Oura sells rings through its website and retail partners, while paid memberships unlock detailed app insights and guidance beyond the basic scores. Founded in Finland in 2013, Oura is headquartered in San Francisco, United States.
