GM Faces Weaker EV Demand As U.S. Sales Decline

GM faces weaker EV demand as U.S. Sales decline. By DCB Editorial, October 2, 2026 General Motors recorded a 5.5% year-over-year decline in U.S. sales during the third quarter, delivering 670,974 new vehicles as demand for its electric models weakened. The drop comes after a strong EV sales period last year, when buyers rushed to purchase electric vehicles ahead of the expiration of federal incentives of up to $7,500. With those incentives no longer available, the surge in EV demand has faded, contributing to lower sales across GM's electric lineup. Rising fuel prices could provide another challenge for the automaker. The national average gasoline price has reached $4.41 per gallon, potentially putting pressure on demand for the large trucks and SUVs that form a significant part of GM's U.S. sales mix. The broader U.S. market remains relatively resilient. Cox Automotive has increased its 2026 new-vehicle sales forecast by around 2% to 16.1 million units, indicating that GM's decline is occurring against a market that is still expected to post growth. GM could also face increasing competition in the hybrid market. Despite its extensive EV portfolio, the automaker currently has only one hybrid model, the Corvette E-Ray. With higher fuel costs potentially encouraging more consumers to consider hybrids, Toyota's broader hybrid range could benefit. The latest figures underline the changing dynamics of the U.S. car market, as EV demand adjusts following the end of federal incentives while hybrids become increasingly relevant to buyers facing higher fuel costs.

GM recalls Cadillac Optiq SUVs for window defect.

GM recalls Cadillac Optiq SUVs for window defect. By Hasn Zahari October 2, 2026 General Motors has issued a recall for 29,347 Cadillac Optiq electric SUVs due to a defect in their front window anti-pinch mechanisms. The flaw occurs during the final 0.5 inches of upward travel when using the key fob's express-up feature, allowing the glass to continue moving even if it encounters an obstruction. This violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 118, which has mandated anti-pinch technology in U.S. vehicles since the early 2000s. The anti-pinch system is designed to detect increased motor resistance when a window meets resistance, automatically reversing direction to prevent injuries. However, in affected 2025-27 Optiq models, the software fails to engage during the last stage of upward movement, creating a risk of trapping fingers or objects. The recall applies exclusively to key fob operation, as manual controls remain unaffected. GM has traced the issue to Kwangjin America, the supplier responsible for programming the upper travel limit in the anti-pinch software. The company states that no injuries have been reported, though the defect remains in violation of federal safety regulations. The correction, a software update to the vehicle's Body Control Module, will be delivered wirelessly to owners enrolled in GM's update program, eliminating the need for a dealer visit. This recall marks the latest in a series of safety refinements for the Optiq. Earlier this year, Cadillac enlarged touch targets on the infotainment display after drivers reported difficulty pressing buttons while operating the vehicle. Despite power windows becoming standard in automobiles as early as the 1940s, modern electric systems continue to reveal design vulnerabilities, particularly in premium vehicles like the Optiq. Owners will receive a notification from GM with detailed instructions for applying the update.

General Motors saw U.S. sales slide in Q3. What the numbers tell us

General Motors said its third quarter sales in the United States declined 5.5% compared to the year ago period, attributing the slip from the same quarter last year to a smaller-than-anticipated electric vehicle market and discontinued models. The Detroit automaker reported Oct. 1 that it sold 670,974 vehicles in the quarter. That decline, slightly smaller than what analysts expected, included a major drop in sales for its luxury brand, Cadillac. GM in July provided similar reasons for a sales dip of nearly 7% during the second quarter, when it said it sold 12,000 fewer vehicles from the second quarter of 2025 after discontinuing select models. "Our business is performing very well, the launch of our next-generation full-size pickup trucks is on track, and we are making investments in new vehicles, innovative technologies, and our U.S. manufacturing footprint to drive our next phase of growth," Duncan Aldred, GM's president of North America, said in a statement. GM's third quarter results fall in line with analyst expectations of softening sales, which could put its market share lead at risk. Edmunds predicted GM sales of 669,044 vehicles, down 5.8% from the prior year quarter. At the end of the quarter, GM said it had inventory of about 568,000 vehicles. EV sales drop still stings Last year, consumers rushed to dealerships to pull ahead car purchases before tariffs on automobiles and automotive parts imposed by President Donald Trump took effect as well as the impending loss of the $7,500 tax credit on qualifying electric vehicle sales. GM has not cut any electric vehicles except for the Canadian-built BrightDrop commercial delivery van, though leaders noted the drop in consumer demand for EVs harmed vehicle sales in the second quarter. Sales of the Chevrolet Bolt, the only vehicle GM makes domestically that is priced below $30,000, sold 3,866 models in the third quarter, bringing its total to 8,090 vehicles so far this year. GM plans to produce 35,000 Chevrolet Bolts across its limited run, refining earlier plans to produce about 150,000 vehicles, according to a UAW leader in the plant that builds them. Production began earlier this year and is slated to end in the first quarter of 2027 when the plant - Fairfax Assembly in Kansas City, Kansas - transitions to producing the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox GM will move up from Mexico. GM sold plenty of its highly profitable gasoline powered pickups and SUVs despite chronically high gas prices amid the ongoing war in Iran. GM pointed to the sales strength of its top five best-selling vehicles: the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse and Chevrolet Trax. The all-new 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra trucks are slated to reach dealerships later this year. The top-selling vehicles included a mix of pricey pickups and budget cars, including the Trax, which starts below $25,000. Affordability remains an issue, though experts noted that high-income buyers drove most of the sales momentum in the third quarter. "Ultimately, people still need reliable transportation, and that replacement demand is helping keep sales from plummeting," Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds' head of insights, said in a statement. "Higher-income buyers who aren't as squeezed by borrowing costs are likely doing the heavy lifting right now, while budget-conscious households are forced to hang onto older cars much longer or seek used-car alternatives." Discontinued models negatively impacted sales in both the second and third quarter, which included the Chevrolet Malibu and Chevrolet Camero as well as the Cadillac XT4 and XT6. GM sold 437,321 Chevrolets in the third quarter, down 4.6% year over year, with GMC sales falling 4.7% to 157,103. Total Buick sales of 43,990 were up 7.9% while Cadillac plummeted 30% to 32,560 vehicles. While GM sales declined, its largest competitors posted gains in the third quarter. Toyota Motor North America reported an 0.6% sales increase on a volume basis on Oct. 1, selling 633,223 vehicles. Hyundai-Kia posted a 5.4% sales increase to 506,200 vehicles, and Automotive News data center reported American Honda had a 9.3% sales increase to 392,341. Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, also reports sales on Oct. 1. Crosstown rival Ford Motor Co. is expected to report sales on Oct. 2. GM brings bigger diesel power with new 8.3L Duramax V8 for 2027 hds.

GM brings bigger diesel power with new 8.3L Duramax V8 for 2027 hds. Saajan Jogia Thu, October 1, 2026 at 3:00 AM PDT General Motors is giving its heavy-duty pickup trucks a major powertrain upgrade for the 2027 model year, introducing an all-new 8.3-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8, available for the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. According to a press release by GM, the new engine is the brand's first clean-sheet heavy-duty diesel V8 designed, developed and manufactured in-house specifically for heavy-duty pickup applications. It produces 555 horsepower and 1,230 lb-ft of torque, which GM says are best-in-class figures for diesel engines in the segment. The powertrain is designed around the demands of towing and hauling, with a compacted graphite iron cylinder block, fully forged crankshaft and connecting rods, and steel pistons. GM has also equipped the Duramax with a dual-stage air-to-water charge-cooling system and a variable-geometry turbocharger. An updated cooling strategy is intended to maintain consistent performance when the trucks are working hard. The engine is paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, while the package also includes upgraded exhaust braking and a new aftertreatment layout designed to support long-distance towing and regeneration. The new diesel is only part of GM's changes for its 2027 heavy-duty lineup. The existing 6.6-liter gasoline V8 has also been enhanced and now produces 412 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. Both engines use the Allison 10-speed transmission with revised shift logic to help maintain an appropriate operating range under different driving and towing conditions. GM is also introducing a segment-first rack-and-pinion electric power steering system for its HD trucks. The system replaces the previous hydraulic-assisted setup and provides approximately 30% more power than the current hydraulic steering gear. The trucks also receive a new electronic brake-boost system, larger 14.6-inch front rotors, and four-piston fixed front calipers. For off-road driving, the lineup adds an available Terrain Mode on ZR2 and AT4X models. In 4HI and 4LO, it allows one-pedal operation by automatically applying the brakes when the driver lifts off the accelerator. For towing, GM says properly equipped trucks can pull up to 20,000 pounds with a conventional hitch and up to 38,000 pounds with a gooseneck. The maximum available gross combined weight rating (GCWR) reaches 46,500 pounds. The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are expected to reach U.S. dealers beginning in late 2026. GM has not yet announced pricing or additional product details. Future updates will announce the MSRP and additional product information.
