Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist First Assistant Program.
  • First Assistant certification is required.
  • Two years of cardiac surgery experience are required.
  • Knowledge of cardiac surgery procedures pertaining to heart revascularization, valve repair and replacement, aortic dissection, and the conduction system is required.
  • Knowledge of equipment and instrument operation and care, and implant preparation, is required.
  • Knowledge of advanced anatomy and physiology is required.
  • Knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass is required.
  • Knowledge of advanced sterile technique and asepsis is required.
  • Basic Cardiovascular Life Support certification is required.
  • Knowledge of medical ethics is required.
  • Good vision, hearing, and manual dexterity are required, along with the ability to safely transfer patients from a bed or stretcher to an operating room table.
  • Technical competency in skin preparation, laser safety, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation is required.
Responsibilities
  • Support the cardiothoracic operating room under the direction or supervision of the cardiothoracic surgeon during surgical intervention.
  • Assist the cardiothoracic surgeon by applying traction or counter-traction as needed.
  • Help maintain hemostasis during surgery.
  • Assist with wound closure at completion of the surgical procedure.
  • Demonstrate competencies for cardiothoracic surgical procedures, techniques, and equipment required for the cardiovascular operating room.
  • Apply the knowledge, skill, and judgment necessary to assist the cardiovascular surgeon in performing a safe operation that yields optimal results for the patient.
  • Perform tasks and duties that provide technical assistance and support to medical and surgical staff and personnel during surgical procedures.
  • Specialize in one or more services as assigned.
