BJC HealthCare, Washington University School of Medicine to open new medical campus. Posted online October 15, 2026 | 6:41 am BJC HealthCare and Washington University School of Medicine plan to open a new medical campus in Sunset Hills. The organizations are transitioning Panera Bread's former headquarters. The Center for Advanced Medicine-Sunset Hills will have primary care, specialty care and diagnostic services under one roof. Sunset Hills lands new outpatient hub in former Panera HQ, set to open this fall. Published on October 14, 2026 Center for Advanced Medicine - Second South County Medical Center Google Street View The former headquarters of Panera Bread in Sunset Hills is being transformed into a sprawling new medical campus, with BJC HealthCare and Washington University School of Medicine preparing to welcome their first patients this fall. The Center for Advanced Medicine-Sunset Hills will sit at 3630 S. Geyer Road and bring together primary care, specialty care and diagnostic services under one roof. According to WashU Medicine, the new facility spans 117,000 square feet and is designed to bring together WashU Medicine specialty care, BJC Medical Group primary care and advanced diagnostic services in a single location. BJC HealthCare, however, describes the related project as a 147,695-square-foot renovation - a discrepancy between the two organizations' public descriptions of the same undertaking that has not been otherwise explained. The Business Journal also reported on Panera Bread's former corporate headquarters property. A long list of specialties under one roof. Once open, the center plans to offer orthopedics, cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, pulmonary medicine, rheumatology, ophthalmology, ENT, obstetrics and gynecology, geriatrics, internal medicine, family medicine and occupational therapy, per the WashU Medicine announcement. The facility's integrated approach will also include outpatient surgery, diagnostic testing and imaging, the same release notes. An Orthopedic Injury Clinic is also planned, offering walk-in care, same-day appointments and Saturday hours - a feature aimed at patients who need quick access to orthopedic treatment without waiting for a scheduled visit. The Sunset Hills project marks the third Center for Advanced Medicine that BJC HealthCare and WashU Medicine have built together. The original Center for Advanced Medicine opened in 2002 on the Washington University Medical Campus, and the second, at 5201 Midamerica Plaza in South County, opened in 2016, according to the same WashU Medicine announcement. From Panera's headquarters to a health campus. BJC HealthCare purchased the former Panera Bread headquarters property in Sunset Hills, the station's report on the acquisition confirmed. Separately, permits for work totaling over $8.7 million have been approved in St. Louis County for the buildout of a new outpatient center, as reported by St. Louis Business Journal earlier this year. Separately, BJC's own listing for the BJC Outpatient Center at Sunset Hills places that facility at 3844 S. Lindbergh Blvd., describing a location where patients receive care from BJC Medical Group providers, WashU Medicine physicians and private-practice physicians, according to BJC's facility page. That same listing notes that Missouri Baptist Medical Center provides lab and imaging services there while Barnes-Jewish Hospital handles infusion services. The dossier does not clarify whether this Lindbergh Boulevard location and the Geyer Road center represent the same project, separate facilities, or different addresses tied to the same broader development. Part of a broader outpatient push. BJC's planning documents describe the Sunset Hills project as a multi-specialty facility that will include both BJC Medical Group and WashU Medicine outpatient care, with services spanning non-oncology infusion, lab services, outpatient procedural services, and imaging. The imaging component is planned as a joint venture with Outpatient Imaging Affiliates, per BJC's own planning page. The Sunset Hills opening arrives as BJC HealthCare and WashU Medicine pursue outpatient expansion elsewhere in the region. St. Louis Children's Hospital and WashU Medicine are planning a pediatric outpatient specialty care center in Wentzville, projected to open in late 2027. That three-story, 133,000-square-foot facility at 45 Wentzville Parkway would be the third Specialty Care Center the two organizations have built in the St. Louis area, following locations that opened in 2015 in west St. Louis County and in 2021 in South County, according to WashU Medicine's announcement on the Wentzville project.
BJC HealthCare and WashU Medicine to open new Center for Advanced Medicine in Sunset Hills. 117,000-square-foot outpatient facility will offer full range of specialty and primary care, advanced diagnostic services October 13, 2026 The new Center for Advanced Medicine-Sunset Hills will offer primary and specialty care along with outpatient surgery, diagnostic testing and imaging. BJC HealthCare and WashU Medicine are expanding access to exceptional care - informed by the latest medical advances - with the opening of the new Center for Advanced Medicine-Sunset Hills. The outpatient facility will welcome its first patients this fall and bring together WashU Medicine specialty care, BJC Medical Group primary care and advanced diagnostic services in a convenient community setting. "Our vision is that patients benefit from the same level of expertise that they would at a BJC HealthCare hospital, but in an additional convenient location," said Janene Reeves, director of operations for the Center for Advanced Medicine-Sunset Hills. "This new location will bring nationally recognized physicians, advanced specialty services and coordinated care closer to home for patients in south St. Louis County and along the I-44 corridor." The new Center for Advanced Medicine builds on the longstanding partnership between BJC HealthCare and WashU Medicine. The 117,000-square-foot facility, located at 3630 S. Geyer Road, will offer orthopedics, cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, pulmonary medicine, rheumatology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology (ENT), obstetrics and gynecology, geriatrics and general internal medicine, family medicine and occupational therapy. "What sets us apart is the connection between discovery and care - our physicians are advancing the future of medicine while providing the most innovative care to patients today," said Paul Scheel, MD, CEO of WashU Medicine Physicians and president of the WashU Medicine and BJC HealthCare Physician Provider Organization. "This new center brings that expertise closer to patients, making it easier for them to benefit from the latest medical discoveries while receiving the specialized, personalized care they need." The facility's integrated approach will also include outpatient surgery, diagnostic testing and imaging. "We are thrilled to welcome primary care patients of all ages into the new Center for Advanced Medicine," said Douglas Pogue, MD, president of BJC Medical Group. "In this new location, we foresee patients benefitting from long-term, relationship-based care with their primary care providers, complemented by the specialty consultations, imaging and follow-up care they may need as health concerns arise. This seamless design is not only more convenient and comfortable for our patients but helps reduce delays in care and makes for a more connected care experience." Expanded services offered in the Center for Advanced Medicine-Sunset Hills will include: * Orthopedics and injury care - Sports medicine, shoulder, hip and knee, spine, hand and physiatry, plus regenerative medicine treatments such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP). An Orthopedic Injury Clinic will also offer walk-in care, same-day appointments and Saturday hours for bone, muscle and joint injuries. * Cardiology - General cardiology care, electrophysiology care and comprehensive diagnostic testing including EKGs, echocardiograms, stress testing, and nuclear medicine testing * Obstetrics and gynecology - Scheduled care for obstetrics and gynecology, including prenatal and postpartum care, ultrasounds, well-woman exams, menopause care and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery consults. Urogynecology services are also available for pelvic floor disorders, bladder and bowel control concerns, and birth-related injuries. * Ophthalmology - Comprehensive ophthalmology and medical optometry services for diagnosis and treatment of common and complex eye conditions * ENT/otolaryngology - Services offered include care for hearing loss and hearing aids, vestibular issues, sleep apnea, sinus and nasal disorders, facial plastics, and head and neck surgery. * Infusion - Non-oncology infusion and injection therapies administered by specially trained nurses and supported by dedicated pharmacy oversight Designed with convenience in mind, the Center for Advanced Medicine-Sunset Hills will feature modern clinical spaces, free parking and easy navigation. On-site post-procedure pharmacy services will help streamline medication management, insurance authorization, therapy coordination and prescription needs. The new Sunset Hills facility is BJC HealthCare and WashU Medicine's third Center for Advanced Medicine. The original Center for Advanced Medicine opened in 2002 on the Washington University Medical Campus. The second, located in South County at 5201 Midamerica Plaza, opened in 2016.
Joint Commission and Kaiser Permanente announce Bernard J. Tyson Award for Pursuit of Healthcare Equity awardee. OAKBROOK TERRACE, Illinois, Oct. 01, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Joint Commission and Kaiser Permanente today announced the winner of the 2026 Bernard J. Tyson Award for Pursuit of Healthcare Equity, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and BJC HealthCare. This prestigious award, established in honor of late Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO Bernard J. Tyson, recognizes healthcare organizations and their partners for their efforts in achieving a measurable, sustained reduction in one or more healthcare disparities. The 2026 Tyson Award was presented to WashU Medicine and BJC HealthCare today at UNIFY 2026(TM): Convening for Quality, Joint Commission's annual, flagship two-day conference. The initiative was selected for its efforts to improve urine drug screening (UDS) during the peripartum period, which begins during pregnancy and extends to 6 weeks postpartum. The team identified variation in urine drug screening and reporting practices during the peripartum period. Their review found that Black patients were more likely than White patients to undergo UDS (42% vs. 25%) and be reported to Child Protective Services (9% vs. 3%). While national benchmarks are unmeasured, the limited number of health systems examining these practices have reported similar disparities, highlighting the need for standardized measurement and more equitable, clinically based screening practices. WashU Medicine and BJC HealthCare launched a system-wide diagnostic stewardship initiative focused on improving screening and ordering practices to address the disparity. Over two years, multidisciplinary leaders from obstetrics, pediatrics, nursing, social work, laboratory medicine, and hospital administration partnered to build consensus, redesign the policy, and implement a clinical decision support (CDS) tool within the electronic health record. The organizations reduced screening rates by 90% and CPS reporting by 80%, while maintaining infant safety. Throughout the implementation of the improvement initiative, there was no increase in preterm birth, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission, neonatal withdrawal diagnoses, infant length of stay, mortality, or readmissions. Selection committee panelists commended the initiative for addressing a structural bias that contributed to unnecessary CPS involvement, which also helps keep families together without compromising infant safety or clinical outcomes. They also highlighted the initiative's impact on reducing stigma, potentially improving outcomes for multiple generations. This initiative can serve as a scalable model for diagnostic stewardship and system-level policy reform to reduce disparities and improve outcomes for all. "Congratulations to WashU Medicine and BJC HealthCare for their tremendous efforts in reducing disparities in peripartum care," said Jonathan B. Perlin, MD, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer, Joint Commission. "These accomplishments truly embody the spirit of the Tyson Award and stand as a powerful example of patient centered excellence. We commend all team members involved for their dedication to ensuring that all patients receive safe, high-quality healthcare." "Congratulations to the teams at WashU Medicine and BJC HealthCare who have demonstrated their commitment to meaningfully addressing healthcare disparities to create a more equitable healthcare system for all," said Andrew Bindman, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer, Kaiser Permanente. "It is gratifying to see Bernard Tyson's legacy live on through this work and through all the Tyson Award finalists and winners." "On behalf of the teams at WashU Medicine and BJC HealthCare, we are proud to be presented this award by Joint Commission and Kaiser Permanente," said Dineo Khabele, MD, head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at WashU Medicine and a leader in the Women and Infants Service Line for BJC HealthCare. "This initiative has made a significant impact on our patients and families, and we hope it will serve as a model for other healthcare systems. The award inspires us to continuously improve care delivery and outcomes for all patients, everywhere." During this week's UNIFY 2026(TM): Convening for Quality conference, leaders each the respective organizations shared their best practices and lessons learned with attendees.
