About the company

ZymoChem develops microbial bioprocesses that convert renewable sugars into chemicals used in everyday consumer products. It licenses engineered microbial strains and accompanying bioprocess technologies to chemical manufacturers, generating revenue from licensing fees, royalties, and partnerships. Clients apply these licensed microbes in their own plants or through contract manufacturers, fermenting sugars to produce target chemicals with scale-up support from ZymoChem. Its approach centers on a licensing-based model and renewable-feedstock chemistry to provide sustainable, scalable alternatives to petrochemical production for the consumer-chemical market.

What believers are saying

  • $4 million DOE funding resumed September 1, 2026, plus $1 million cost share.
  • September 2026 CRADA with Los Alamos targets bio-based adipic acid for nylon 6,6.
  • Q1 2026 parent trial showed 52% preferred BAYSE-powered diapers.

What critics are saying

  • Headcount fell to 48 in March 2026, while active job postings dropped to two.
  • ZymoChem still lacks disclosed manufacturing customers, so licensing revenue stays unproven.
  • If diaper and nylon pilots stall, federal grants end before commercial royalties arrive.

What makes ZymoChem unique

  • Carbon-conserving microbes cut fermentation CO2 while improving yields up to 50%, per SynBioBeta 2026.
  • BAYSE launched in 2024 as a scalable, biodegradable, bio-based superabsorbent polymer for diapers.
  • 2026 partnerships with lululemon, Toyota Ventures, and national labs validate platform breadth.

ZymoChem collaborates with Los Alamos National Laboratory in development of bio-based adipic acid.

ZymoChem collaborates with Los Alamos National Laboratory in development of bio-based adipic acid. September 29, 2026 The biotechnology company ZymoChem recently announced a new Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Government and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The agreement, administered through the Agile BioFoundry (ABF) and supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), will advance ZymoChem's development of bio-based adipic acid, a key precursor to bio-nylon 6,6. Under the agreement, ZymoChem and LANL will collaborate on metabolic engineering of E. coli to produce adipic acid in economically feasible quantities and rates. ZymoChem's proprietary carbon-conserving pathways are designed to maximize theoretical yield, and the collaboration will focus on improving the titer and rate of production. LANL will apply technologies developed through the Agile BioFoundry, including biosensor adaptation, enzyme engineering, and adaptive laboratory evolution, to help accelerate strain engineering breakthroughs that will bring bio-adipic acid to commercial-scale production.
