About the job

Requirements
  • At least 3 years designing shipped, player-facing interfaces for games or interactive entertainment on mobile, console, or handheld platforms.
  • Design touch-first interactions, including direct manipulation, coherent gesture vocabulary, thumb reach and grip zones, finger-sized targets, realistic scroll and drag physics, and immediate feedback without hover states.
  • Design for primary input, including navigation, focus and selection states, and consistent conventions.
  • Demonstrate strong visual craft in typography, grid and layout, spacing and hierarchy, and purposeful use of color to convey state and meaning.
  • Treat motion, sound, and haptics as core design materials, coordinating transitions, audio cues, and haptic feedback.
  • Build and document design-system components, including variants and states; scale them across screen contexts and determine when to reuse, extend, or break patterns.
  • Determine when console layouts can scale dynamically to handheld screens and when bespoke handheld-specific layouts are needed for readability and interaction.
  • Own UX for platform-specific states and compliance, including device suspend and resume, inactivity dimming, offline play, and variable network conditions.
  • Apply localization and accessibility standards.
  • Use Figma fluently at a systems level and be comfortable with AI-based prototyping tools such as Claude Code and Figma Make.
Responsibilities
  • Own the end-to-end player experience for assigned features from concept through shipping, including flows, wireframes, high-fidelity design, motion and haptic direction, and implementation support.
  • Leverage and contribute to the established FC Design System, extending it for handheld contexts.
  • Define input models and navigation paths for touch and platform-specific input, ensuring transitions between them feel seamless.
  • Prototype and evaluate designs on hardware early and often.
  • Partner with game designers, producers, engineers, research, and product managers to establish the interface experience.
  • Work within platform requirements and first-party guidelines to prepare for certification.
Desired Qualifications
  • Have shipped a title on handheld platforms such as mobile, Switch, ROG Ally, MSI Claw, or Steam Deck.
  • Have hands-on experience with Unity, Unreal/UMG, or a proprietary UI framework sufficient to prototype in-engine or assess implementation feasibility.
  • Have experience with diegetic or in-world UI.

About the company

Electronic Arts (EA) publishes and distributes video games across consoles, PCs, and mobile devices. It creates games and extends their life with live services, such as downloadable content (DLC), in-game purchases, and subscriptions, to keep players engaged over time. Compared with competitors, EA blends a broad lineup of genres and platforms with a steady revenue model based on live services and memberships, rather than relying only on initial game launches. Its goal is to inspire the world through play while building stable, recurring income by maintaining active player communities and expanding engagement across geographies.

Leaked Mass Effect: Universe trailer emerges after EA closes BioWare and cancels the game

A leaked trailer for a new Mass Effect game has surfaced after EA closed BioWare, the studio behind the series. Authors Catherynne M. Valente and Derek Kunsken said they had worked on the game for years. In a memo to staff, EA executives Cam Weber and David Tinson said only "a small team at BioWare" was working on early development. The decision "not to move forward with this development" led to the closure. A Mass Effect streaming series announced in 2024 is still in development, IGN reported, citing sources inside Prime Video. An online petition urging EA to continue the series or license it to another studio has nearly 17,500 signatures.

EA lays off 400 staff and closes BioWare after 31 years, memo leak reveals

Electronic Arts is laying off about 400 employees, or 3% of its global workforce, and closing video game studio BioWare, according to a leaked employee memo reported Wednesday. The cuts come amid a business restructure. BioWare's closure ends a 31-year run in which it developed franchises including "Mass Effect" and "Dragon Age." "Over the past several months, we've taken a hard look at our business, how we operate, and what it will take to lead in this next era of interactive entertainment," wrote Cam Weber, president and chief studios officer, and David Tinson, president and chief operating officer. They added that the company had "challenged assumptions, confronted hard realities" and made deliberate choices "to drive sustained growth.

EA shuts down BioWare after three decades, ending next Mass Effect project

Electronic Arts (EA) has shut down BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. BioWare announced the closure on social media Wednesday, saying early development on the next Mass Effect project is also ending. The announcement followed a Bloomberg report of 400 job cuts across EA, including 50 at BioWare. EA executives told staff the company is aligning "talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth," according to Bloomberg. BioWare was founded in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1995 and joined EA in 2007. EA went private last year in a $55 billion deal led by Silver Lake, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, and Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners.

EA shuts down BioWare after 30 years and cancels Mass Effect 5

Electronic Arts (EA) will shut down BioWare, the studio behind Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. Early development on the next Mass Effect game will also end. In a statement, BioWare said its focus is on supporting its team through the transition. The studio was founded in 1995. BioWare had a string of costly misses with Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which fell short of fan expectations, financial expectations, or both. Longtime Mass Effect figures Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah, and Mac Walters left the company years ago.
