UK to give Rolls-Royce up to $1.6B for UltraFan engine as it plans $3.2B investment

Rolls-Royce will receive up to 1.25 billion in UK government support to develop and build its UltraFan engine in Britain. The engine targets the short-haul aircraft market. The company plans to invest 2.5 billion in the programme over the next decade. It also intends to create 3,300 UK roles by 2029. Public funding does not remove technical and commercial risks. The engine must still meet performance, reliability and certification requirements, and win customers. Rolls-Royce's civil aerospace and Power Systems businesses remain central to its growth. Cost control, supply chain pressure and cash generation will shape the returns.

Rolls-Royce nears government subsidy deal for aircraft engines.

Rolls-Royce nears government subsidy deal for aircraft engines. October 24, 2026 ROLLS-ROYCE is nearing a deal for British government subsidies of up to £200 million ($267.9 million) to help fund the development of a new engine for short-haul aircraft, with an announcement possible as early as next week, the Financial Times reported on Friday. Funding of £100 million-£200 million would help Rolls-Royce develop and test a demonstrator version of its new UltraFan 30 engine, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. The company had hoped to secure an initial government commitment for the project in the first half of the year. In July, Chief Executive Tufan Erginbilgic said if the government backed the project and Rolls-Royce's new engine gained a position on a narrowbody airframe, that would create 40,000 British jobs. Erginbilgic also confirmed Rolls-Royce held discussions with other governments, including Germany and the US, about support for the program. For the last 15 years, Rolls-Royce has been absent from the narrowbody market, which is much bigger than the widebody market it is currently focused on. The company has been developing the next-generation UltraFan with the aim of getting back in the narrowbody market.

Rolls-Royce nears government subsidy deal to develop short-haul plane engines.

Rolls-Royce nears government subsidy deal to develop short-haul plane engines. The car and aircraft engine manufacturer would use the $267m invested to develop its UltraFan 30 engine, designed for short-haul planes. The company's chief executive Tufan Erginbilgiç added this project could create 40,000 jobs. Published on 10/23/2026 at 06:00 am EDT MarketScreener.com Rolls-Royce is about to close a deal for UK government subsidies of up to £200m ($267.90m) to finance its UltraFan 30 engine on short-haul planes, the Financial Times revealed. The company may make a statement next week but has not confirmed the agreement yet. If it becomes effective, taxpayers could provide financial support for the development of this technology, which can be considered as a strategic, major evolution in the British aeronautics industry. Contributing to the UK's reindustrialization This investment matches UK PM Andy Burnham's ambition to reindustrialize the country and create thousands of new jobs, including in the automotive sector. Tufan Erginbilgiç, Rolls-Royce's chief executive, has insisted that this project could be a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" likely to generate 40,000 skilled jobs. Erginbilgiç already sought state aid in February, after unveiling plans to return up to £9bn to shareholders over the next three years. The car manufacturer had also previously received UK government funding for engine programmes, including in research and development. Rolls Royce reported good first-half 2026 results, with operating profit rising by 46% to £2.5bn, and lifted its full-year guidance to £4.7bn-£4.9bn for underlying operating profit.
