Requirements
  • Complete an 80-hour certification course in Geriatric Nursing or be presently enrolled in one.
  • Pass the Virginia NACEP test after completion of the 80-hour certification course.
  • Hold a current Nursing Assistant license through the Virginia Board of Nursing.
  • Have CPR and First Aid certification or the ability to obtain them.
  • Communicate with staff at the beginning and end of each shift to relay vital information about the shift and resident concerns.
  • Anticipate residents' needs to help prevent falls.
  • Adhere to hand hygiene and isolation precautions to prevent transmission of organisms.
  • Transfer, lift, and turn residents using good body mechanics and proper protocol.
  • Assist residents to change positions according to care plans and report complaints of pain to the assigned nurse.
  • Use gentle handling to prevent skin tears, abrasions, and lacerations, and immediately report any that occur or are observed to the nurse.
  • Provide toileting according to individual resident needs, accurately record the information daily, and promptly report changes in resident elimination to the nurse.
  • Encourage and allow residents to walk to and/or from meals, bathroom activities, and other destinations in accordance with current ambulation orders.
  • Give or supervise mouth care for each assigned resident at least once per shift.
  • Answer resident call bells in a timely manner, consistently responding within 3–6 minutes.
  • Respect residents' choices about what to wear, where to eat, and when to go to bed.
  • Observe residents for changes or problems and promptly report them to the staff nurse.
  • Assist in keeping CNA care plans current and accurate.
  • Maintain resident rooms in a neat, uncluttered condition, including straightening closets and bedside stands.
  • Correct safety issues involving the resident-care environment or equipment, or complete appropriate maintenance or housekeeping requests; correct risks immediately or report them to a supervisor.
  • Prepare residents and transport them to the beauty shop, physical therapy, activities, and scheduled outside appointments as needed; have residents ready and at appointed places on time.
  • Record and report vital signs and pertinent information, document care accurately, promptly report abnormal temperature and blood pressure results to the staff nurse, and record resident information on mood/behavior forms, ADL flow sheets, and daily care flow sheets.
  • Serve residents' trays, assist residents who need help eating, encourage residents as needed, provide a bib or cover-up if needed, feed residents in an unhurried manner and appropriate serving order, and serve trays within 15 minutes of arrival to the unit.
  • Operate patient-care equipment, including electric and manual high/low hospital beds, wheelchairs, mechanical lifts, scales, and thermometers.
  • Take direction from the staff nurse and ensure assignments and instructions are understood and carried out.
  • Use time effectively to meet job requirements and residents' needs.
  • Complete items on the to-do sheets and return the list to the staff nurse before the scheduled shift ends; advise the staff nurse well in advance if items cannot be completed.
Responsibilities
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, toileting, and dining.
  • Document resident care while respecting and promoting each resident's rights and maintaining a clean, safe, home-like environment.
  • Bathe residents according to their preferences and schedule, ensuring they are covered during bathing; provide tub, shower, or bed baths regularly, use a poncho when transporting residents in the hallway, and provide foot and nail care with every bath.
