Requirements
  • The student must be in good academic standing in a bachelor's or graduate-level program in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • The role requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, including precise and accurate writing.
  • The role requires a professional demeanor and strong human relations and customer service skills.
  • The role requires the ability to plan, prioritize, and organize work assignments effectively and meet deadlines.
  • The candidate must be able to write in Associated Press style.
  • The role requires the ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities.
  • The candidate must be comfortable using Microsoft Office applications.
  • The role requires the ability to occasionally lift moderate-weight materials and to stand or walk continuously.
  • The role requires the ability to detect and translate speech or other communication.
  • The role may occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.
Responsibilities
  • Write media materials, including news releases, media alerts, and pitches, while gathering information, interviewing faculty, staff, and students as needed, and following fact-checking and approval processes before distribution.
  • Assist with or lead the identification of compelling story ideas and coordinate with the public relations and media team to develop and proactively pitch local, regional, and national media.
  • Assist in responding to inbound media inquiries.
  • Monitor local, regional, and national media outlets and related opportunities.
  • Update media lists and research appropriate contacts.
  • Support earned media reporting.
  • Assist with public relations, social media, and other marketing team duties that advance priority initiatives and campaigns.
  • Provide suggestions for social media content.
  • Coordinate and manage ad hoc projects as assigned.
  • Share progress regularly with External Communications staff.
  • Collaborate with the broader Communications team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience writing for media or publications, or previous internship experience, is preferred.
  • Media relations experience is preferred but not required.
