About the company

Airbnb runs an online marketplace where travelers book places to stay, local activities and personal services from hosts. Listings range from rooms in shared homes to entire properties and independent hotels, giving guests alternatives to conventional hotel stays. Hosts set prices and availability, while guests search by destination, compare listings and book through the website or mobile app. The platform handles payments and messaging, and earns service fees on reservations rather than renting out properties it owns; hosts receive payouts for the stays, experiences or services they arrange. Airbnb was founded in 2007 and has its headquarters in San Francisco, California.

Airbnb stock fell 28% on average in past market shocks; 48% in 2022

Airbnb shares fell 4.6% in the week to October 27, 2026, while the S&P 500 rose 0.14%. The stock trades 11.4% below its highest close of the past year. In five market shocks since its December 2020 listing, Airbnb fell 28.0% on average, against 13.4% for the index. Its worst drop came in the 2022 inflation shock, when it lost 48% and the S&P 500 lost 24%. Recovery took a median of 6.3 months, but the 2022 slump took 49.7 months to reverse. Revenue rose 16.5% in the June 2026 quarter. Over twelve months, sales reached $13.2 billion, up 13.6%. Airbnb holds $12.1 billion in cash and short-term investments against $2.5 billion of debt. Risks include tighter EU short-term rental rules and a slight dip in expected September-quarter adjusted EBITDA margin. Results are due in November 2026.

Airbnb bans checkout chores for guests; hosts threaten boycott and higher cleaning fees

Airbnb will stop hosts asking guests to do tasks that "require significant effort or time, or would typically be performed by a cleaner," such as stripping beds, taking trash offsite, and washing dishes. Announced October 20, the policy applies worldwide to bookings made on or after November 20, 2026. Hosts must now disclose all rules in a set section of the listing and cannot add new ones later. They also cannot impose their own fines. Violations may bring warnings, a listing notice, or lower search visibility. Hosts have pushed back. A Change.org petition has passed 10,000 signatures, and some plan a booking blackout on November 20. Others threaten to raise prices. The row comes as Airbnb's second-quarter revenue rose 17% year over year to $3.6 billion.

Airbnb vs Coupang: why Airbnb's 20.4% margin beats Coupang's 0.6% as a 2026 buy

Motley Fool columnist Robert Izquierdo picks Airbnb over Coupang as the better consumer stock to buy in 2026. Airbnb posted 2025 revenue of $12.3 billion, up 10.8%, with net income of $2.5 billion. Coupang's revenue reached $34.5 billion, up 14.1%, but net income was only $208 million. Coupang's growth has slowed since a November 2025 data breach. South Korea fined it over $400 million, and quarterly revenue growth fell from 18% in the third quarter of 2025 to 4% in the second quarter of 2026. Airbnb's second-quarter revenue rose 17% to $3.6 billion. It trades at a higher sales multiple (8.0x versus 0.7x).

Airbnb stock trades at 38.7x earnings: what must be true to buy after a 36.7% rally?

Airbnb shares have returned 36.7% over the past twelve months, against 15.1% for the S&P 500, leaving new buyers wondering if they are late. The stock trades at 38.7 times trailing earnings, compared with 23.0 for the index. Revenue rose 16.5% in fiscal Q2 2026, up from 12.7% a year earlier. Management guided fiscal Q3 growth of 15% to 17%, about three points of which comes from currency, and raised its full-year outlook to at least mid-teens growth. Hotel nights are growing about three times faster than the homes business, though hotels remain a single-digit share of nights booked. A risk is Europe, where new EU plans would give cities more leeway to curb short-term rentals. Airbnb fell 48% in the 2022 inflation shock, against 24% for the S&P 500. It is expected to report Q3 results in November 2026.
