Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science, or the required college credits to enter a twelve-month internship in an approved Medical Technology school, is required.
  • Current Medical Technologist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology or an equivalent certification is required.
  • The role requires visual and hearing acuity and color vision for perceiving colors of solutions.
  • The employee must be able to work safely around toxic or caustic chemicals, detergents, moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, communicable diseases, and blood-borne pathogens.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain the operation of assigned technical areas so that tests are performed within a clinically effective time frame.
  • Conduct routine and complex procedures in assigned areas using professional knowledge, training, and published standardized procedures.
  • Maintain technical proficiency in all procedures performed in assigned departments.
  • Ensure compliance with quality assurance and quality control directives and guidelines, and notify the director of uncorrected issues.
  • Perform operationally defined maintenance and notify the director of identified issues.
  • Perform operationally defined quality control, evaluate each quality-control test, and take corrective action as needed.
  • Troubleshoot test and analyzer issues using prescribed methods and critical-thinking skills.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies and keep the work area orderly and neat.
  • Serve as a resource to other technical personnel and assign duties to subordinate personnel as needed.
  • Accept assignments to other sections or shifts and provide assistance to other sections as workload requires.
  • Analyze and compare established and proposed procedures and develop additional procedures for departmental review and adoption.
  • Provide training to other personnel, evaluate results, and certify the technical competence of those trained.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and appropriately handle protected health information.
  • Maintain a safe work environment, follow safety precautions, and report safety concerns.
  • Interact effectively with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology, or Microbiology is preferred.
  • One year of hospital laboratory experience is preferred.
