Requirements
  • An Associate’s Degree is required in a related field of Science for the Medical Laboratory Technician track, preferably from an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technology, or completion of Military Medical Laboratory Specialist Training.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required in a related field of Science for the Medical Laboratory Scientist track, preferably from an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technology, or completion of Military Medical Laboratory Specialist Training.
  • Less than one year of prior training in a laboratory setting is required for both tracks; student training is accepted.
Responsibilities
  • Process specimens according to established protocols, including proper patient identification and labeling.
  • Perform specimen collection through phlebotomy and venipuncture at specific hospital locations as needed.
  • Determine specimen acceptability through visual inspection and quality-control recognition of abnormal or unusual results.
  • Document unacceptable specimens according to policy and communicate specimen requirements to appropriate personnel.
  • Report, document, and communicate critical values according to hospital policy.
  • Complete reports and maintain records and documentation of test results by entering and verifying data in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Operate analytical equipment for medical laboratory testing.
  • Monitor, clean, calibrate, and maintain devices and instruments according to manufacturer specifications and relevant standards.
  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and initiate corrective action.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment checks and maintenance actions.
  • Follow quality-control policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy and validity of laboratory results.
  • Recognize factors affecting measurements and take appropriate action according to protocol.
  • Complete quality-control protocols for testing before releasing results.
  • Document quality-control results in compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in the proficiency testing program.
  • Fulfill annual regulatory requirements to maintain clinical competency.
  • Participate in hospital and laboratory in-services for educational purposes and accrediting-agency compliance.
  • Provide technical education and training to other technicians and students when requested to meet the criteria established by the student’s institution.
  • Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with Jefferson’s values.
Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technology.
  • Completion of Military Medical Laboratory Specialist Training.
