Gen Z's thrifting boom lifts eBay and Depop to $9B in US fashion sales

eBay and Depop generated $9 billion in US fashion sales over the past 12 months, up in the mid-20% range from a year earlier, executives said on the company's third-quarter earnings call. The figure counts Depop's sales before eBay acquired it for $1.4 billion in July. Depop's US sales volume more than doubled year over year in the quarter. Its active buyers reached 11 million over the trailing 12 months, up from 9 million. Chief executive officer Jamie Iannone credited Gen Z's focus on sustainability and affordability. In a eBay report, 46% of consumers aged 18 to 29 buy used goods at least every other week, against 28% of all consumers. eBay's gross merchandise volume rose 15% to $23.2 billion. Depop added nearly three percentage points to that growth.

eBay shares rise 3.82% to $122.53 as $827M shareholder returns exceed $749M free cash flow

eBay shares rose 3.82% to $122.53 at 12:00 EDT on October 29, after the company beat earnings expectations for the third quarter. Needham kept its Buy rating and raised its price target to $140 from $135. Revenue reached $3.206 billion. Free cash flow was $749 million, while eBay returned $827 million to shareholders: $689 million in buybacks and $138 million in dividends. That is $78 million, or roughly 10%, more than it generated. Cash, cash equivalents and non-equity investments totalled $3.3 billion at quarter-end. At $122.53, the shares trade 38.14% above the GF Value estimate of $88.70. The test now is whether eBay can cover shareholder returns from cash flow while it keeps investing in its marketplace.

eBay Q3 earnings preview: analysts expect 10.5% revenue growth after $3.13B last quarter

eBay will report third-quarter earnings on Wednesday after market close. Analysts expect revenue to grow 10.5% year on year, up from 9.5% in the same quarter last year. In the previous quarter, the online marketplace beat revenue expectations with $3.13 billion, up 14.8%. Active buyers rose 1.5% to 136 million. Revenue guidance for the next quarter beat estimates, but earnings per share guidance missed. Analysts have mostly held their estimates over the past 30 days. eBay rarely misses Wall Street's revenue forecasts. Shares are up 10.8% over the last month, trading at $118.96 against an average analyst price target of $116.92.

eBay changed USPS Ground Advantage twice in one week.

eBay changed USPS Ground Advantage twice in one week. Alexa Alix Last Updated: October 25, 2026 2 minutes read eBay announced on October 22 that another round of USPS Ground Advantage rate changes took effect October 25. The company says some prices increase and others decrease based on package weight, shipping zone, and destination. This is the second material Ground Advantage change in a week. October 18 brought new destination-based geographic groups. October 25 changed the rates applied within that structure. Two different changes on the same label. The October 18 update changed how destinations are grouped. eBay's new ZIP-code shipping map covers the 25,491 ZIP codes now sitting across three geographic groups, including destinations that moved into a more expensive category. The October 25 update is separate. The underlying Ground Advantage rates changed again, with weight, zone, and destination all affecting whether a specific shipment costs more or less. There is no honest national percentage to apply across a catalog. A one-pound parcel going nearby moves differently from a four-pound parcel going into another geographic group. eBay did not publish a consolidated before-and-after rate table. It told sellers to check current costs through its shipping calculator, which limits broad comparison and makes a store-specific audit more necessary. Calculated shipping updates, margin does not. eBay says calculated shipping rates update automatically. That makes the postage shown to buyers respond to the new rates, assuming your package data and service are accurate. Automatic quoting does not fix bad dimensions, a missing handling allowance, or a buyer-facing cap. It does nothing at all for free shipping listings. With flat shipping, you absorb the gap between your advertised charge and the label cost. With free shipping, the item price covers the whole label. September's USPS label increases on eBay ran as high as $4.35 on certain Priority Mail packages, and the lesson then applies now: the largest published increase is a warning, not an estimate of your average cost. Do not raise every item by an assumed percentage. That makes nearby orders less competitive while leaving expensive weight and destination combinations underpriced. Build a weighted quote audit. Use recent orders rather than hypothetical packages. Pull at least four weeks of Ground Advantage shipments with package weight, dimensions, origin ZIP, destination ZIP, and the listing's shipping method. Select a representative sample across your main weight bands and destination groups. Requote each through eBay's calculator using identical inputs, then compare against what you previously paid. Save the quote date and a screenshot or export so you have evidence when reconciling invoices. Multiply each difference by its frequency in your order history. Say 200 monthly packages rise $0.30, 100 fall $0.20, and 700 stay flat. The modeled net increase is $40 a month, four cents per order across 1,000 orders. A store shipping heavier or farther gets a different answer entirely. That arithmetic is illustrative, not a forecast of eBay's new rates. The purpose is keeping a small expensive segment from disappearing inside an average. Fix the listings carrying risk. Start with listings combining low contribution, free shipping, and heavier packages. Those have the least room to absorb another increase. Check that stored package measurements match the carton your warehouse actually uses. For flat-rate listings, compare the advertised shipping charge against new quotes across several destinations. If the gap is persistent, change the charge or the item price with the competitive effect in view. For calculated shipping, confirm buyers see the intended service and accurate dimensions. Then reconcile the first labels purchased on or after October 25. Keep this rate-card change separate from the October 18 geographic change in your notes, even though both hit the same transaction. If rates move again, a dated quote file shows which layer changed.

eBay reveals another layoff round even as business improves.

eBay reveals another layoff round even as business improves. eBay is making another major reduction to its workforce, even as the online shopping giant expects its business to perform better than previously anticipated. The company plans to eliminate approximately 9% of its global workforce as part of a restructuring to direct resources toward its strategic priorities, as revealed in an Oct. 22 regulatory filing. The company expects to incur between $130 million and $150 million in restructuring costs, largely related to severance and employee benefits, with the workforce reduction expected to be mostly completed by March 2027. The layoffs are part of a broader restructuring plan aimed at redirecting resources toward eBay's strategic priorities and supporting long-term growth. eBay said savings from the restructuring would support future investments, although it did not identify the specific business units that would benefit. The move will affect around 1,000 employees, a company spokesperson confirmed the count to Reuters. Most of those charges will be recorded in the fourth quarter of 2026, with the workforce reduction expected to be mostly completed by the end of the first quarter of 2027, subject to local requirements. The layoffs come despite an improving business outlook. In August, eBay projected third-quarter revenue of $3.07 billion to $3.12 billion and gross merchandise volume of $22 billion to $22.4 billion. In its Oct. 22 SEC filing, the company said it now expects financial results for the quarter ended September 30 to exceed its earlier guidance. The layoffs are the company's second major workforce reduction this year and follow the 800 job cuts announced in February. eBay layoffs follow major California office closure. The latest cuts add to an ongoing restructuring effort that has already affected hundreds of eBay employees in California. In April, I covered that eBay was preparing to close its San Francisco office at 300 Mission Street, with operations scheduled to wind down by Sept. 30. California WARN filings identified 243 layoffs at the company's San Jose headquarters and an additional 28 layoffs at its San Francisco office. A separate notice reported on the relocation of 198 San Francisco employees to San Jose. The company previously said the office consolidation was related to the expiration of its San Francisco lease. With the latest announcement, eBay has disclosed plans for two major rounds of workforce reductions in 2026, as well as an office closure and subsequent relocations. eBay layoffs 9% of its workforce, following earlier 800 job cuts. eBay's growing business adds twist to layoffs. The restructuring comes as the company expands its presence in categories including secondhand fashion, collectibles and refurbished merchandise. eBay reported second-quarter revenue of $3.1 billion, an increase of 15% from a year earlier. Gross merchandise volume also rose 15% to $22.4 billion. The company has also continued to invest in its resale business, including the acquisition of Depop, the secondhand fashion marketplace popular with younger shoppers. eBay completed the acquisition on July 30, paying approximately $1.4 billion, including preliminary purchase-price adjustments. More Layoffs: The investment reflects a broader shift in how consumers shop. According to eBay's 2026 Recommerce Report, released Oct. 7, 70% of surveyed consumers globally said secondhand shopping helps them manage household budgets. Another 84% ranked saving money among their top three reasons for purchasing secondhand products. eBay's strategy increasingly centers on attracting shoppers seeking value while expanding services that enable buyers and sellers to transact. The company's latest filing indicates that savings from the restructuring are intended to support future strategic and operating initiatives. However, eBay also acknowledged risks associated with the restructuring, including possible disruptions to its operations and its ability to serve buyers and sellers. The company has not announced any related changes to selling fees, buyer protections or other marketplace policies.
