About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field is required; a master's degree is preferred.
  • At least five years of hands-on reliability engineering experience, preferably in electromechanical systems or sensors.
  • A proven track record testing and validating hardware components for long-term field performance.
  • Strong understanding of physics of failure and reliability engineering principles, particularly for electronic, optical, or mechanical systems.
  • Experience with environmental and mechanical stress testing, including test design, execution, and interpretation of results.
  • Familiarity with reliability analysis techniques and tools, including failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), Weibull analysis, statistical process control (SPC), highly accelerated life testing/highly accelerated stress screening (HALT/HASS), and accelerated life testing.
  • Proficiency in scripting or automation using Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW.
  • Experience with reliability test equipment, including environmental chambers, vibration tables, thermocouples, strain gauges, and data acquisition systems.
  • Ability to work effectively with design, systems, manufacturing, and test teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead reliability engineering efforts across hardware programs to ensure components and systems meet performance, environmental, and durability requirements.
  • Apply Design for Reliability (DfR) principles throughout the product lifecycle, from concept through production, to mitigate failure risks.
  • Develop and execute test strategies to uncover failure modes, validate off-the-shelf and custom hardware, and model expected field performance.
  • Translate FMEA and reliability risk analyses into targeted test plans with defined objectives, acceleration factors, and pass/fail criteria.
  • Plan and run Design of Experiments (DOE) to isolate root causes and address reliability concerns.
  • Design and optimize test fixtures and setups to evaluate hardware under electrical, thermal, mechanical, and environmental stresses, including shock, vibration, and thermal cycling.
  • Drive and support failure analysis investigations with design, manufacturing, and component teams to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Use data analytics tools such as Python, JMP, and MATLAB to automate testing workflows, perform reliability modeling such as Weibull and Monte Carlo, and derive insights from test data.
  • Improve reliability processes and tools across hardware engineering teams.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree.
  • Reliability engineering experience in electromechanical systems or sensors.

About the Company

Eight Sleep

Thermoregulated smart mattress with sleep tracking

Eight Sleep sells hardware plus a subscription service to improve sleep through thermoregulation and biometric tracking. Its Pod Cover sits on a current mattress and uses an Active Grid of water tubes connected to a Hub to heat or cool the bed from 55–110°F, with dual-zone climate and real-time Autopilot temperature adjustments; sensors monitor sleep stages, heart rate, HRV, and breathing without wearables. The Pod 4 Ultra adds an adjustable base to help reduce snoring, and revenues come from hardware sales (roughly $2,000–$3,700 per Pod cover) plus a recurring app subscription. Eight Sleep differentiates itself by combining precise temperature control with biometric sleep data in one system and is pursuing AI-powered health features and FDA filings for select capabilities to expand into clinical sleep-health solutions.
