About the job

Responsibilities
  • Lead, coach, and grow a team of engineers to create and optimize strategic infrastructure capacity plans at various altitudes.
  • Build software and mathematical optimization models to support capacity planning instead of relying on manual planning.
  • Work with the executive team to assess capacity scenarios for executability, tradeoffs, and impacts.
  • Work cross-functionally with engineering and business teams to support the growth of Meta’s products.
  • Ensure long-range strategic investment decisions are made for products and infrastructure, including AI and non-AI technologies.

About the company

Meta builds Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, apps that billions of people use to message friends, share photos and video, and follow creators and businesses. Most of its revenue comes from advertising: businesses buy placements across these apps, and Meta's AI systems decide who sees each ad and report the results. Its Meta Superintelligence Labs group builds the company's own AI models, the Meta AI assistant and the Muse agent app. Its Reality Labs unit makes Quest headsets and, with eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. Meta was founded as Facebook in 2004 and is based in Menlo Park, California.

What believers are saying

  • A booming ad business backs pay and stock: Meta's revenue rose 28% to $60.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.
  • AI engineers get vast resources: Meta expects $130 billion to $145 billion of capital spending in 2026.
  • Wearables teams are scaling: in February 2026, Meta sought to double glasses output to 20 million units this year.

What critics are saying

  • Job security is shaky: about 8,000 employees were hit by Meta's May 2026 layoffs, aimed at funding its AI push.
  • Meta's biggest apps still face a breakup fight: the FTC appealed its Instagram and WhatsApp court win in January 2026.
  • Hardware plans get reshuffled: Meta cut about 1,500 Reality Labs jobs in January 2026, shifting from the metaverse to wearables.

What makes Meta unique

  • Meta's four apps form one huge audience: 3.56 billion people used them daily in March 2026.
  • Meta leads smart glasses through eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica: their Ray-Ban and Oakley models sold over 7 million pairs in 2025.
  • Meta builds consumer AI agents in-house: its Muse app, launched September 2026, topped Apple's US free-app chart within ten days.

Meta falls 7% as $34.9B capex tops cash flow; investors punish AI spending cuts and hikes

Meta shares fell 7% on October 22 even though third-quarter sales rose 26% and beat estimates. Capital expenditure of $34.9 billion topped operating cash flow as AI spending outran the company's cash generation. MetLife's Drew Matus says investors punish both capex cuts and hikes. "I don't actually really know what people want from these people," he said. Microsoft and Alphabet report Wednesday, followed by Amazon and Intel on Thursday. The four make up about 15% of the Nasdaq 100, which has fallen roughly 7% this month. The Federal Reserve decides on rates Wednesday afternoon, hours before Microsoft and Alphabet report. Matus expects it to skip a move and revisit policy in December.

Cathie Wood buys $24.5M of Meta after shares slump on AI spending fears

Cathie Wood's Ark funds bought 38,110 shares of Meta Platforms on October 22, worth about $24.5 million at $642.62 a share. The purchase followed a share price drop after the company's third-quarter earnings report. Meta shares fell 7% the next day and 1% more on October 23, as investors worried about its heavy spending on artificial intelligence (AI). Revenue reached $64.6 billion, beating forecasts of $63.41 billion, but earnings of $3.83 per share missed the $5.46 consensus because of a $9.89 billion settlement charge. Meta raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $135 billion to $145 billion. Citi lifted its price target to $905 from $895 and kept a Buy rating.

Meta's Muse AI agent wants your money tasks, but financial planners say don't connect your accounts

Meta's new AI agent, Muse, promises to handle money chores such as tracking spending, auditing subscriptions, negotiating bills, and making purchases. Financial planners say users should not connect it to their accounts. Unlike chatbots such as ChatGPT, agents act on a user's behalf, sending emails and making calls. Meta says Muse works securely and seeks approval before big decisions. The app is free with a usage limit; plans cost $20 and $100 a month. Users have reported Muse hoarding items in shopping carts and sending strangers to people's homes for Marketplace deals. Meta admits Muse "can and will still make mistakes," and offers up to $300,000 in bug bounties. Planners suggest using established chatbots with personal data removed.

Meta shares fall 7% despite 26% revenue jump to $64.6B as capex soars to $145B

Meta Platforms shares fell more than 7% on Thursday, despite third-quarter earnings that beat expectations. The stock is down nearly 10% over the past week. Revenue rose 26% year over year to $64.6 billion. But free cash flow turned negative, at $2.1 billion, the first such result since Meta went public in 2012. Spending on AI infrastructure jumped 80% to nearly $35 billion. Meta now expects full-year capital expenditures of $135 billion to $145 billion, up from earlier guidance of $130 billion. The company also plans a new class of nonvoting shares to help fund growth, which could dilute current investors.

SLB opens Canadian modular data centre facility for Meta, expanding beyond oilfield services

SLB is opening a data centre infrastructure facility in Canada to serve Meta as a modular partner. The site will handle offsite assembly, installation, and commissioning of modular components for Meta data centres. The move takes the US energy services provider, which has a market value of about $73.5 billion, beyond its traditional oilfield focus. It applies SLB's experience in large industrial projects to hyperscale computing demand. The facility is planned to open in the first half of 2027. SLB targets $4.5 billion to $5.0 billion in data centre revenue and $700 million to $800 million in adjusted EBITDA in 2028, though that depends on smooth integration and on hyperscale contracts ramping as planned.
