About the job

Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
Responsibilities
  • Attend biweekly Building Advisory Group meetings outside instructional hours for at least 30 minutes per session.
  • Actively participate in team discussions supporting school climate, operations, and instructional initiatives.
  • Serve as a liaison for staff input on issues affecting school operations and improvement efforts.
  • Organize a rotational roster and ensure at least one Building Advisory Group member, in addition to the Principal, attends every School Advisory Council meeting.
  • Model collaboration, professionalism, and commitment to shared leadership.
  • Complete required documentation, including meeting notes, agendas, and activity reports, as applicable.
  • Comply with applicable district policies, procedures, and expectations related to staff leadership roles.
  • Fulfill the terms of the Building Advisory Group added-duty contract in addition to the regular duty day, including a brief activity report and added-duty contract narrative, with photos attached if any.
  • Staff must nominate themselves under a specified category and apply by emailing the Principal, identifying their staff category.
  • After the posting period closes, the Principal or Assistant Principal communicates the applicants and their categories to staff and arranges an anonymous paper ballot by category within two days; staff have two days to vote.
  • After voting, the Principal tallies votes with the secretary or home school facilitator present, ensures categories are filled, and notifies Central Office of the selected staff members.
  • If a staff member already has two or more added-duty contracts, the Principal notifies Central Office; that person cannot receive the Building Advisory Group contract without Superintendent approval.
  • If two tenured teachers receive the most votes at applicable sites where tenured and non-tenured staff both apply, the Superintendent's office assigns one of the two teacher positions to the non-tenured teacher with the most votes.
  • After assignment issues are resolved, Central Office announces selections to sites, and the Principal or Assistant Principal organizes the first meeting within seven days of the announcement.
  • If a category is not filled through voting, it remains unfilled and the group assembles with selected staff in categories that received votes.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Alaska driver's license is preferred.

North Slope Borough School District runs public schools for children across northern Alaska, with instruction shaped by the needs and traditions of predominantly Inupiat communities. Its academic mission links reading, writing and mathematics with students' understanding of Inupiat values, history, language and culture. The Inupiaq Learning Framework guides curriculum and assessment, while the district's Inupiaq Language Program teaches language through an accelerated second-language method and a custom computer-based learning tool. Teachers receive culturally based teaching units, resources and professional development. The district is guided by its Board of Education and was founded in 1973; its central office is in Utqiagvik, Alaska.
