Requirements
  • A Master's Degree is required.
  • National Board Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform complete histories and physicals and document them in the medical record.
  • Order and collect clinical data using appropriate assessment techniques, supporting diagnostic information, and diagnostic procedures when indicated.
  • Serve as a first responder for nursing and house staff during patient status changes and situations requiring orders, procedural interventions, or resuscitation.
  • Assess risks associated with caring for acutely and complex chronically ill patients, including medication side effects, immobility, impaired nutrition, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, immunocompetence, invasive interventions, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary health care team to diagnose acute and complex chronic conditions.
  • Manage diagnostic tests through ordering, interpretation, performance, and supervision.
  • Formulate prioritized differential diagnoses, diagnose complications, and order appropriate interventions.
  • Identify expected outcomes and formulate, document, implement, and modify plans of care for complex acute and chronic health care needs.
  • Use evidence-based practice guidelines and protocols in individualized, dynamic plans of care across the continuum of care.
  • Prescribe diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions.
  • Perform advanced procedures consistent with privileges and competency validation when applicable.
  • Maintain ongoing communication and collaboration with the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Communicate with patients, families, and staff to promote continuity of care across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Document patient progress, transfers, discharges, plans of care, problem lists, procedures, acute events, and death summaries in the medical record as applicable.
  • Maintain timely documentation that meets acute care compliance standards and captures patient acuity.
  • Precept and mentor others and provide education and instruction to graduate students.
  • Participate in research, analysis of evidence-based practice, Advanced Practice Grand Rounds, and specialty-specific meetings.
  • Maintain continuing education units and membership in a professional organization.
