Fortune AIQ 75 ranks five health care firms.

Fortune AIQ 75 ranks five health care firms. UnitedHealth Group and Elevance Health were the top-ranked health care companies on the Fortune AIQ 75, Fortune's 2026 AI adoption ranking, placing 30th and 31st among 75 Fortune 500 companies. Three other health care companies made the list, which Fortune and sponsor ServiceNow released Sept. 29. The results matter to payers and providers because the ranking reflects how technology leaders at large companies view one another's AI programs. Health insurers again outranked other health care organizations, and no hospital or health system appeared among the health care entries. Where health care landed on the Fortune AIQ 75. The five health care companies on the list, with their Fortune 500 positions, are: * No. 30: UnitedHealth Group (No. 3 on the Fortune 500) * No. 31: Elevance Health (No. 18) * No. 36: DaVita (No. 331) * No. 48: Pfizer (No. 73) * No. 75: Thermo Fisher Scientific (No. 106) JPMorgan Chase ranked first, followed by Alphabet, Coca-Cola, Amazon and Nvidia, according to the Sept. 29 announcement. Mastercard, Visa, Carrier Global, Cleveland-Cliffs and Microsoft completed the top 10. The list grew from 50 companies in 2025 to 75 this year, with 36 first-time entrants across 18 sectors, according to the release. Pfizer was among the newcomers Fortune profiled. Health care tied with food for five spots, behind technology and financial services, a ServiceNow executive said at a Fortune event Oct. 1. How Fortune built the ranking. Fortune partnered with Enterprise Technology Research to survey technology leaders at Fortune 500 companies about the value of their own AI investments and their impressions of AI adoption at sector peers. Polling ran from July 10 to Aug. 11, and the final sample included 167 respondents, according to Fortune's methodology. Each company's score is a weighted average of four components: * Self-report: respondents' assessment of AI implementation, return on investment and spending at their own company * Peer report: views of AI implementation, governance and competitive advantage at other companies in the sector * Peer selection: how often a company was named the most effective AI user in its sector * AI agents: new for 2026, measuring the maturity, realized value and scale of AI agents in production For companies on the 2025 list, the prior year's score was also included to stabilize year-over-year movement, Fortune said. The framework builds on ServiceNow's Enterprise AI Maturity Index. ServiceNow, as sponsor, was not eligible for inclusion and had no role in selecting companies, according to Fortune. What the insurers have said about their AI work. Both top-ranked insurers have described large AI programs publicly. UnitedHealth Group introduced a generative AI assistant for members, called Avery, in March, and has said it plans to invest about $1.6 billion in AI this year, according to published reports. The company has described more than 1,000 AI applications across its insurance, care delivery and pharmacy businesses. Elevance Health expanded its Virtual Assistant to about 22 million commercial health plan members in December 2025, with Medicare members to follow in 2026, the company said at the time. An Elevance executive wrote in an Oct. 5 sponsored column that its Health OS interoperability platform has reduced lack-of-information claim denials by 68 percent, a figure based on internal data. Neither company's figures have been independently verified, and the Fortune ranking does not assess specific programs. It measures how technology leaders rate AI adoption, including at competitors. What comes next. The survey-based design means placement reflects reputation among technology leaders as well as self-reported results, which readers should weigh when comparing companies. Fortune said it expects to publish the ranking annually. For payers, the AI agents score added this year points to the next measure of progress: whether automated tools move beyond pilots into production with documented value. The next Fortune AIQ 75 will show whether health care companies keep pace with financial and technology firms on that measure.
