What believers are saying

  • Supreme Court dismissed ED's appeal in February 2026, removing a major legal overhang.
  • Razorpay launched RAY in September 2026, with 20,000-plus merchant conversations already logged.
  • Management is pushing Malaysia, Singapore, and more Southeast Asia markets for growth beyond India.

What critics are saying

  • Razorpay still depends on RBI permissions; a 2023 onboarding freeze showed regulatory fragility.
  • PayU and other incumbents can copy campaigns, compressing differentiation and pricing power.
  • IPO timing raises execution pressure; any merchant churn or compliance lapse before listing hurts valuation.

What makes Razorpay unique

  • Razorpay controls payments, banking, lending, and offline acceptance inside one merchant stack.
  • RAY on WhatsApp turns Razorpay into an AI account manager, not just a gateway.
  • Its India-first UPI and real-time payments focus supports a credible Southeast Asia export strategy.

ETSA 2026: Over a decade on, India's startup story is only getting started.

ETSA 2026: Over a decade on, India's startup story is only getting started. ET TEAM Last Updated: Oct 12, 2026, 06:00:00 AM IST Synopsis. The 12th edition of The Economic Times Startup Awards (ETSA) captured this transition, reflecting an ecosystem that has moved beyond the race for scale to pursue technological depth, durable businesses and international markets. More than a decade after India's startup ecosystem took its first steps, its entrepreneurial journey is entering a new phase, with a growing crop of founders tackling complex problems in deeptech and hardtech, and homegrown companies tapping the public markets as well as pursuing global ambitions. The 12th edition of The Economic Times Startup Awards (ETSA) captured this transition, reflecting an ecosystem that has moved beyond the race for scale to pursue technological depth, durable businesses and international markets. That breadth was evident in this year's Startup of the Year nominees, which included AI startup Sarvam, ecommerce marketplace Meesho, satellite launch vehicle maker Skyroot, wealthtech platform Groww, urban mobility service Rapido and logistics company Porter. You May Like An 11-member jury, chaired by Wipro executive chairman Rishad Premji, named Groww the winner, recognising its ability to sustain rapid growth while turning profitable at scale. Speaking to a gathering of more than 300 of the most influential names in India's startup and technology industry, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal, the guest of honour at the awards, pointed to the gap between the scale of the country's startup ecosystem and its untapped potential. Even with about 250,000 registered startups, he said, the journey was only beginning, particularly in deeptech, where the number of significant startups remains small. "We have only just begun," said the minister. "In fact, in the deeptech space, there are only a few thousand startups of significance. We have a long way to go." His remarks reflect a broader shift in an ecosystem, where the aspiration is increasingly to build companies that can compete internationally, rather than simply serve India's growing consumer base. The early years of the startup boom were dominated by ecommerce, consumer internet and digital services, but founders are taking on problems in sectors that demand deeper technological capabilities, longer investment horizons and greater spending on research and development. Many prominent voices from the industry concurred. Kalyan Krishnamurthy, chief executive of Flipkart group, termed India's startup ecosystem one of the most dynamic stories of this time. "It keeps growing in ambition, in scale and in the problems it takes on," he said. "Founders, investors, operators and customers are all building on each other's progress. ETSA does an important job in celebrating that journey and the entrepreneurs driving it." PhonePe cofounder and chief executive Sameer Nigam said India's startup landscape had widened dramatically over the past decade, with innovation spreading well beyond its early strongholds. "We started with companies largely focused on consumer technology and ecommerce," he said. "Today, we are seeing startups working in deeptech, agritech, robotics and foundational technologies. The ET Startup Awards reflect that innovation taking place across the country." Razorpay cofounder and CEO Harshil Mathur, whose company was Startup of the Year at ETSA 2022, said the strength of this year's field showed how far Indian entrepreneurship had come. "Each of them was outstanding, and choosing a winner must have been extremely difficult. It shows how far the ecosystem has come. Ultimately, the ecosystem wins when more companies do well," he said. Manu Chandra, founder and managing partner at venture capital firm Sauce, won the Midas Touch award for distinguished early-stage consumer investing. Online yoga platform Habuild was named Bootstrap Champ, while climatetech startup Varaha won the Social Enterprise award. For the first time, the Woman Ahead category had joint winners, with the jury picking Palmonas cofounder and CEO Pallavi Mohadikar and Progcap cofounder and chief executive Pallavi Shrivastava. Deeptech startup Theranautilus won the Top Innovator award, Armatrix was named Best on Campus startup, and Mukund Jha, cofounder of vibe-coding startup Emergent, was the Comeback Kid. The next chapter Discussions in Bengaluru on Friday also made it clear that global ambition will define the ecosystem's next phase. "Let's get out of the cosy comfort of the large Indian opportunity or Indian market. Let us think of going global, because those who will not go global will be left behind," Goyal said. India's lower cost structure is an advantage, but it cannot make up for inferior technology, Dheemanth Nagaraj, cofounder and CEO of AI semiconductor startup Agrani Labs, said during a panel discussion on building the hard stuff. Moderated by Accel founding partner Prashanth Prakash, the panel also included Kshitij Khandelwal, cofounder and CTO of spacetech startup Pixxel, and Laina Emmanuel, cofounder and chief executive of BrainSight AI. "At the end of the day, the technology we use is state of the art. There's no other way to penetrate the market," Nagaraj said, arguing that a cheaper but substandard product would not work. For the ecosystem's next phase of growth, however, access to capital and viable exit routes will be critical. In a fireside chat, Groww cofounder and CEO Lalit Keshre said capital was available for companies that needed it, but valuations remained a key consideration for private market investors. Meesho cofounder and chief executive Vidit Aatrey said global late-stage investors, many of whom have been focused on AI in recent years, would return to India as they reassess opportunities across markets. "Late-stage funds have been comparing opportunities across the globe... and we all know the last two to three years have been about AI. I believe they will come back to India and it will happen very soon," he said. Serial entrepreneur K Ganesh said three developments were reinforcing one another - investors were more willing to back founders for longer, public markets were accepting new-age companies that continued to invest for growth, and entrepreneurs were taking on harder problems in sectors such as semiconductors, space, defence and energy. "Every successful IPO gives investors a reason to fund the next deeptech company," Ganesh said. The Economic Times Startup Awards were presented by IDFC First Bank, with workspace partner Indiqube, knowledge partner Tracxn and hospitality partner The Leela Palace, Bengaluru. Ecommerce payment gateway in India: UPI, Cards & COD for Wix and Shopify stores (2026).

Ecommerce payment gateway in India: UPI, Cards & COD for Wix and Shopify stores (2026). 1 hour ago An ecommerce payment gateway in India is the service that lets a Wix or Shopify store accept UPI, debit and credit cards, net banking, wallets, and - for most product categories - cash on delivery, then settle that money into the seller's bank account. For most Indian stores in 2026, the right setup pairs a UPI-first gateway such as Razorpay or Cashfree with COD for categories where first-time buyers still hesitate to pay online, since UPI alone now accounts for the majority of online transaction volume in the country. Why the gateway you pick still decides whether a sale completes. Checkout is the one page on an ecommerce store where every rupee of ad spend and every hour of SEO work either converts or evaporates. A shopper in Jalandhar or Ludhiana who reaches checkout and doesn't see UPI as the first, obvious option will often just abandon the cart rather than dig through a menu for it. The store's product photography and pricing rarely lose the sale at this stage - the payment options do. That's true whether the store runs on Wix Studio or Shopify, and it's one of the first things Arcknet checks when auditing a client's ecommerce build. The payment methods an Indian store can't skip in 2026. * UPI (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm): the default choice for most shoppers under 40 - it needs to be the first, one-tap option at checkout, not buried under "other methods." * Cards (Visa, Mastercard, RuPay): still essential for higher-ticket purchases and older customers; RuPay adoption keeps climbing because merchant fees are typically lower. * Net banking: a smaller share of transactions now, but some B2B buyers and older customers still expect it. * Wallets (Paytm, Amazon Pay): more useful for repeat-customer convenience than as a first-time payment method. * EMI / Buy Now Pay Later: matters once ticket size crosses roughly ₹3,000-5,000, especially for electronics, furniture, and fashion. * Cash on delivery: still requested heavily in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, and by first-time buyers who haven't built trust in a new store yet. Comparing the major gateways for Wix and Shopify stores. Fees, settlement speed, and exactly which payment methods are enabled by default change over time, so confirm current rates directly with each provider rather than relying on a number quoted months ago. As a starting comparison for Indian stores: * Razorpay: covers UPI, cards, wallets, EMI, and net banking; has a native Shopify app and integrates with Wix through its checkout/redirect flow. It's the most commonly used gateway among Indian D2C stores Arcknet works with. * Cashfree: similar payment-method coverage to Razorpay, generally known for fast payouts and reliable UPI processing; also has a Shopify app and API-based Wix integration. * PayU: an established Indian gateway with wide bank coverage, used by many mid-size retailers; connects to both platforms via API or plugin. * Instamojo: a simpler setup historically popular with very small sellers and solopreneurs, with fewer advanced features than Razorpay or Cashfree. * PayPal: only needed if the store also sells outside India - it doesn't cover UPI or COD, so it works as a second gateway alongside a domestic one, not a replacement for it. Cash on delivery: still necessary, but manage the risk. COD converts hesitant first-time buyers, but it also carries return-to-origin (RTO) risk when a customer refuses the parcel at the door. Stores that keep COD healthy generally do three things: charge a small COD handling fee or ask for a partial deposit above a certain order value, verify high-value COD orders with an OTP or a confirmation call before dispatch, and restrict COD to pin codes their courier partner actually services reliably. Tracking which products see the highest RTO rate also helps decide, product by product, when it's safe to nudge customers toward prepaid-only. Setting this up on Wix or Shopify. On Wix Studio, payment providers are connected through the site's business and payment settings, with built-in integrations for the major Indian gateways alongside support for custom redirect checkout where needed. On Shopify, gateway apps install from the Shopify App Store and connect through the store's payment settings, either as a direct integration or a manual/redirect method. The most common mistake Arcknet sees on both platforms is a store that only ever enabled one payment method at launch and never revisited it as the product mix changed. Every Wix Studio and Shopify store Arcknet builds through its website development work in Jalandhar includes payment gateway setup matched to what the business actually sells, and an existing store's checkout can be audited the same way - see recent builds at Arcknet's portfolio or get in touch to have a checkout reviewed. Security and compliance basics. PCI DSS compliance is largely handled by the gateway itself when a store uses its hosted checkout correctly - the store should never store raw card numbers on its own servers, and tokenization through the gateway takes care of that. Confirm any gateway under consideration is RBI-authorized before integrating it. None of this is legal advice; for specific regulatory questions, check the gateway's own compliance documentation or consult a qualified professional. Frequently asked questions. Which payment gateway is best for a small Wix store in India? For most small Indian Wix stores, Razorpay or Cashfree cover UPI, cards, and wallets with the least setup friction, and both have Wix-compatible integration paths. Do I need cash on delivery if I already accept UPI? In most categories outside metro-only or B2B products, yes - COD still converts a meaningful share of first-time buyers who haven't built trust with a new store yet. Can I accept international payments on the same store? Not through a domestic-only gateway. Add PayPal, or a gateway with explicit multi-currency and cross-border support, alongside your domestic gateway. How much do Indian payment gateways charge? Rates vary by provider, payment method, and negotiated transaction volume, and they change over time, so confirm current pricing directly with the gateway rather than a fixed number quoted elsewhere. Is UPI actually safer to accept than cards? Both are safe when processed through an authorized gateway's hosted checkout. The real risk in either case is a store trying to handle payment details directly instead of letting the gateway process them. Does Arcknet set up payment gateways as part of a website build? Yes - every Wix Studio and Shopify store Arcknet builds includes payment gateway setup matched to what the business sells. See recent work on Arcknet's portfolio page or reach out through the contact page.

ecommerce website development in chennai.

ecommerce website development in chennai. September 17, 2026 admin Its Blog With the rapid expansion of direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands, local retail chains, and manufacturing hubs across Tamil Nadu, having an online store is no longer just an additional sales channel - it is a core business asset. However, building a store that actually generates revenue requires more than just listing products. It requires frictionless mobile checkouts, sub-2-second page speeds, and local search visibility. Investing in professional ecommerce website development in chennai ensures your e-commerce store is engineered to handle peak festive traffic, process instant UPI payments, and convert casual visitors into repeat buyers. What makes an e-commerce store successful in 2026? Modern shoppers have zero tolerance for slow product pages, confusing navigation, or complicated checkout steps. Paytm, PhonePe, Razorpay are building AI Products. When will they start making money?

Paytm, PhonePe, Razorpay are building AI Products. When will they start making money? Paytm, PhonePe and Razorpay are betting on AI across fintech, but meaningful revenue from these products could take until FY28 and beyond. Read Time: 3 mins AI product launches should currently be viewed more as a sign of future ambition than immediate earnings potential (Photo: AI Generated) India's leading fintech companies are rapidly rolling out artificial intelligence (AI)-based products, but the technology is yet to become a meaningful revenue driver, at least not in the near term, according to Emkay Research, as cited by PTI. The brokerage expects AI-led revenue generation in the fintech sector to become more visible from FY28 onwards, even as companies such as Paytm, PhonePe and Razorpay expand their use of AI across payments, lending, customer service and merchant operations. AI Products Are Growing, But Revenue Still Elusive AI emerged as the dominant theme at the Global Fintech Fest 2026, with over 32% of the total sessions explicitly focused on AI or agentic AI, as Emkay Research said in a report following the event. However, the brokerage noted that adoption and monetisation remain at an early stage. None of the companies covered in its report disclosed revenue generated from their newly launched AI products. "We expect AI-led revenue to be an FY28 and beyond story, with servicing and insight work showing up sooner," the brokerage said. Paytm showcased an AI platform aimed at banks, lenders, insurers and small merchants, offering tools for customer service, sales, fraud assessment and marketing, while PhonePe demonstrated AI-powered search, transaction insights and merchant-focused tools. Razorpay, meanwhile, showcased an AI account manager for small businesses and a proprietary payments model trained on around 3 trillion data points across four billion payments. Cost Savings May Come Before AI Revenue The brokerage also indicated that for fintech companies, initially the benefits might come via internal efficiencies rather than direct monetisation. The benefits might include lower servicing costs, better customer support, faster technology integration and other potential benefits. Whether these efficiencies lead to higher usage and incremental revenue should become clearer over the near to medium term. The brokerage also highlighted increasing adoption of digital payments as UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions worth Rs 29.82 trillion in August 2026, while the Unified Lending Interface had more than 64 lenders and 136 data services. Meanwhile, agentic payments face regulatory hurdles as the Unified Agent Protocol for small autonomous debits was still pending at the close of the fintech fest, according to the brokerage report, and it also emphasizes the need for human checkpoints in the process. Thus, for investors, this assessment suggests that AI product launches should currently be viewed more as a sign of future ambition than immediate earnings potential. Proprietary data, distribution, and the ability to convert AI capabilities into higher usage are likely to determine which fintech companies eventually turn their AI investments into meaningful revenue growth.
