Preply, the online language learning marketplace, has hired two senior executives in the US. Lillian Reaume joins as chief people officer, and Bilal Zia joins as vice president of data science and analytics. Reaume previously held the same role at Stitch Fix and Rubrik, and worked at Amazon. Zia was head of data science and analytics at Duolingo and has also worked at Amazon and the World Bank. The hires follow a $150M Series D round led by WestCap earlier this year, which valued Preply at $1.2 billion. The company connects learners in 180 countries with more than 150,000 tutors teaching over 90 languages. "Their leadership across people and data will be essential as we scale globally and strengthen our presence in the US," said Kirill Bigai, co-founder and chief executive officer.
Preply has achieved unicorn status with a $1.2 billion valuation following a $150 million Series D funding round. The online language learning marketplace connects over 100,000 tutors with learners in 180 countries and reported turning EBITDA positive in the 12 months prior to the funding. The company remains private and is not listed on any stock exchange. Unlike traditional EdTech platforms, Preply operates as a marketplace between independent tutors and students, avoiding the high costs of proprietary content creation. The platform faces operational risks including competition from AI and automated translation tools. A significant portion of its operations and workforce is based in Kyiv, Ukraine, creating potential business continuity concerns. Quality control across its decentralised tutor network also requires constant oversight.

Preply, the global language learning marketplace, has raised $150 million in a Series D round led by WestCap, valuing the company at $1.2 billion. Preply combines human tutoring with AI-powered tools, with research showing students progress up to three times faster than average benchmarks. The Preply 2025 Efficiency Study found 96% of learners consider human tutoring essential for progress. Since its Series C round, Preply has more than tripled its bookable tutors and added 40 new languages whilst achieving positive EBITDA. The funding will expand AI capabilities and accelerate global growth. Total funding now stands at approximately $299 million.
