About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial experience building production systems that handle high-volume, low-latency workloads.
  • Expert proficiency in Java, including JVM internals, concurrency, performance tuning, the Spring Boot and Spring ecosystem, and modern Java 17 or later features.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and optimizing transaction processing, payments, or equivalent high-throughput distributed systems.
  • Experience designing RESTful and event-driven services, including API versioning, backward compatibility, and contract testing.
  • Hands-on experience containerizing Java applications and operating them on Kubernetes, including AKS, EKS, GKE, or OpenShift.
  • Experience with Azure; working familiarity with AWS or Google Cloud Infrastructure is a plus.
  • Experience with Jenkins, Gradle, container image builds, and automated quality gates, and comfort contributing to pipeline definitions.
  • Strong unit, integration, and end-to-end testing discipline; experience with JUnit 5, Mockito, Testcontainers, or equivalent.
  • Secure coding practices in regulated environments and familiarity with OWASP Top 10, input validation, and secrets management.
  • Experience with structured logging, metrics such as Micrometer or Prometheus, and distributed tracing such as OpenTelemetry or equivalent.
  • Production experience with PostgreSQL or an equivalent relational database, including schema migration, query optimization, and connection pooling.
  • Active use of AI coding tools such as Copilot, Claude, or Cursor, with disciplined validation practices.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and optimize high-performance Java services for real-time payment, authorization, clearing, and settlement transaction processing.
  • Apply JVM threading models, garbage collection tuning, lock-free data structures, and asynchronous I/O to sustain predictable throughput under peak load.
  • Define and enforce performance budgets by authoring benchmarks, regression tests, and latency service-level objectives, and profile and root-cause regressions before production.
  • Build with microservices, event-driven NATS messaging, reactive pipelines, and 12-factor application design.
  • Develop container-native software that is lean, stateless where possible, and operable on Kubernetes, including AKS, OpenShift, EKS, and GKE.
  • Collaborate with the DevOps and Platform team on Kubernetes manifests, Helm or Carvel packaging, resource requests and limits, health probes, and rolling deployment strategies.
  • Contribute to GitOps workflows and ensure application configuration is version-controlled, auditable, and environment-agnostic.
  • Design for multi-cloud portability and avoid cloud-vendor lock-in in application code and dependency choices.
  • Use AI tools throughout the software development lifecycle for code generation and review, test case synthesis, documentation, defect analysis, and performance diagnostics; validate generated output for correctness, security, and maintainability, and do not place secrets, personally identifiable information, or payment card industry data into prompts.
  • Share effective AI adoption patterns, prompt strategies, and tooling discoveries with the team, and identify production-ready AI or machine-learning applications relevant to banking.
  • Write comprehensive unit, integration, and contract tests; enforce coverage thresholds and quality gates in continuous integration.
  • Maintain end-to-end transaction-processing test scenarios and partner with Quality Engineering to integrate Testkube-orchestrated test suites into the pipeline.
  • Participate in code reviews focused on correctness, edge cases, error handling, observability, and maintainability.
  • Write secure-by-design code for regulated financial environments, including input validation, output encoding, least-privilege service identities, and safe secret consumption through ESO or vault integrations.
  • Build PCI-DSS, SOC 2, and audit-logging controls into code and acceptance criteria.
  • Participate in threat modeling, security code reviews, and static and dynamic application security testing remediation, treating security findings with the urgency of production incidents.
  • Contribute to pipeline definitions, own service observability through structured logs, metrics, and distributed traces, and participate in on-call rotations.
  • Write and maintain runbooks, deployment guides, and architecture decision records.
  • Apply clean-code and SOLID principles, API contract discipline, backward compatibility, and disciplined release management.
  • Read and interpret existing COBOL programs to extract business logic, data flow, and processing rules for faithful reimplementation in modern Java services.
  • Collaborate with domain experts and architects to validate behavioral equivalence between modernized Java implementations and legacy COBOL counterparts across documented business scenarios.
  • Document COBOL-to-Java translation decisions, edge cases, and business-rule interpretations.
  • Provide third-line escalation support for production issues on owned services by diagnosing complex failures using logs, metrics, traces, and thread or heap dumps.
  • Deliver root-cause analyses and post-incident reviews, and implement durable fixes and preventive controls to eliminate recurrence.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in banking or payments, including core banking, payment processing, ACH, SWIFT, card authorization, or clearing and settlement.
  • Understanding of ISO 8583 and ISO 20022 specifications and implementations based on them.
  • Experience authoring and maintaining business rules in Drools (KIE) or a comparable business rules management system, ideally for transaction routing, risk, or eligibility logic.
  • Operational experience building event-driven services on NATS or equivalent messaging systems such as Kafka, Pulsar, or RabbitMQ.
  • Experience deploying identical workloads across two or more of Azure, OpenShift, AWS, and Google Cloud Infrastructure.
  • Ability to read and interpret COBOL programs sufficiently to extract and translate business logic into Java.
  • Familiarity with ytt, kapp-controller, or imgpkg for Kubernetes-native packaging and GitOps.
  • Experience embedding PCI-DSS, SOC 2, GDPR, or equivalent compliance frameworks in engineering practices.
  • Experience shipping AI or machine-learning capabilities in production products, such as anomaly detection, intelligent routing, or fraud signals.
  • Demonstrated experience developing junior engineers through code review, pair programming, or structured coaching.
