Giant hedge funds in the US attacked by cyber attacks. Several of the large hedge funds based on Wall Street have been attacked by a wave of cyber attacks. This has put the industry on red alert with fears that there are weaknesses in their software systems. The billionaires Steve Cohen's Point 72 and Ken Griffin's Citadel are among the hedge funds that have been hit by "phishing" attacks, where the aim is to obtain private information through phone calls and similar methods in recent days. Major Wall Street firms targeted in attempted cyberattacks, sources say. Thursday, 06 Aug 2026 | 7:15 AM MYT (This story has been republished to change an incorrect image) NEW YORK, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Hackers attempted a series of sophisticated cyberattacks on major Wall Street financial services firms and money managers in recent days, targeting their information systems, according to two people familiar with the matter. Some of the world's largest hedge funds along with several private equity firms were targeted, the sources said, requesting anonymity as the matter is confidential. The hacking attempts featured phone calls in which cybercriminals tried to trick employees into granting them access or handing over other sensitive information, the sources said. Point72 Asset Management told investors on Wednesday that it had faced an attack from hackers, one of the sources said, adding that the firm indicated that no customer information was stolen during the attack. The hackers also attempted to breach information systems at other hedge funds, including Two Sigma Investments and Citadel, the sources said. Two Sigma did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. Citadel and Point72 declined to comment. Attempts by hackers to break into major financial institutions are routine, according to cybersecurity experts. The phone-call tactic is still widely used by hackers because of its effectiveness. It has been used successfully by cybercriminal groups such as "Scattered Spider," a loose-knit group of young hackers that has racked up a large roster of corporate victims over the past few years. Global companies are battling a surge in AI-powered cyberattacks and ransomware that disrupt operations and steal data. The White House announced a working group earlier this year, uniting AI developers and critical infrastructure operators to share threat intelligence and coordinate cyber defenses. Point72 hired a discretionary macro trading head from a quant hedge fund.

Point72 hired a discretionary macro trading head from a quant hedge fund. 3 hours ago AQR Capital Management is one of the biggest players in the quant hedge fund space, but it's not purely a quant fund. It's home to several senior discretionary traders, one of whom has just defected to Point72 after 11 years at the fund. Vinod Addidam joined Point72 this month as its global head of macro trading strategy. He reports to Mo Grimeh, the fund's global head of macro who joined from Millennium six years ago. Addidam will be working out of the fund's Stamford, Connecticut office, having already bought a house in the area last summer. At AQR, Addidam was global head of equities and commodities trading, according to a biography from a Rosenblatt conference in 2022. The biography stated that he was "also responsible for the firm's Capital Markets and AQR Arbitrage trading efforts." Before joining AQR, Addidam spent seven years at Deutsche Bank. He joined as an MBA associate and rose to director, serving as head of emerging markets delta one and arbitrage trading. AQR seems to take a 'quantamental' approach to its macro trading business. An opening in its discretionary portfolio management division says that the team "works with the firm's systematic researchers to jointly manage macro portfolios and the firm's flagship Global Macro Strategy." Point72's global macro team specifies that it makes discretionary investments first and foremost. It also has a systematic macro business which operates via the fund's quant arm Cubist Systematic Strategies. Have a confidential story, tip, or comment you'd like to share?
