About the job

Requirements
  • At least 3 years of experience in Product Design, Interaction Design, UX, or equivalent roles; experience designing complex workflow software, real-time collaboration tools, connected hardware, or agentic systems is ideal.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating software design, system architecture, interaction principles, visual craft, and shipped products, including the candidate's thinking and process.
  • Demonstrable product design skills spanning product strategy, design ideation, wireframing, system architecture, design systems, workflow design, and visual execution.
  • Ability to design holistic user journeys across users, moments, and use cases, including edge cases, states, variations, and complex workflows spanning touchpoints and moments.
  • Strong visual design skills across color, typography, layout, data visualization, and information hierarchy; experience with map-based, spatial, or 3D interfaces is ideal.
  • Understanding of technical constraints in interface design, ability to adapt design solutions to production limitations, and experience collaborating with engineering and technical teams.
  • Design process that incorporates behavioral insight, formal user research and product testing, passive channels, desk research, and analytics, with consideration for users' physical and emotional states.
  • Ownership of outcomes, speed, comfort with early-stage startup ambiguity, ability to make confident decisions with incomplete data, and ability to work autonomously across projects.
  • Ability to integrate cross-functional constraints and non-design perspectives into daily work, respond constructively to critical feedback, and resolve disagreements respectfully using rationale and user-centered framing.
  • Willingness to work on-site in New York City five days a week.
Responsibilities
  • Lead end-to-end design of the Ember platform, from concept and exploration through design and launch; expand the design language, evolve workflows, shape the platform experience across mobile and web, help define product architecture, and establish interface patterns.
  • Consider complex edge cases, possible failures, and operational constraints to support safety teams in making split-second decisions with clarity and confidence.
  • Design software for end-to-end, multi-touchpoint user journeys, adapting workflows across physical-to-digital services, participants, and devices.
  • Apply visual hierarchy, typography, layout composition, and information clarity to build and scale interface components that safety operators can quickly interpret and rely on.
  • Develop solutions rapidly, prioritize immediate impact while planning for system evolution, and use iteration and testing to resolve uncertainty.
  • Plan and conduct user research with installers, operators, and end users; translate findings into product decisions and advocate for user needs based on field evidence.
  • Work with founders, hardware teams, machine learning engineers, and software developers to establish design collaboration across the organization.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience at an enterprise hardware, Internet of Things, or connected-device company where the device and software ship together.
  • High-caliber visual design polish and ability to develop a new brand system.
  • Experience designing agentic workflows or artificial intelligence-native products.
  • Experience planning, leading, and synthesizing primary research, especially co-design and user experience landscape studies.
  • Versatility, eagerness to learn new design tools and skills, and ability to adapt quickly to shifting requirements.
  • Experience working and shipping quickly and iteratively.
  • Exposure to hospitality, healthcare, education, public safety, or other regulated or trust-driven markets.

About the company

Firefly sells a safety and emergency response platform to schools, hospitals, hotels, retailers, and workplaces, combining cloud software with connected hardware. Its Ember application handles site mapping, asset and people management, mass communication, roll call, response workflows, EMS integration, and an AI response agent, while its Emergency Readiness Suite adds panic buttons, detection devices, and noise analysis. Staff write response protocols in plain English instead of configuring rules, and the company says a site can be operational within 24 hours of onboarding. Unlike the disconnected alarm, camera, and notification systems most buildings run, it puts detection and coordinated response in one place. Its goal is to shorten response times by giving every site a single operating picture during an incident.
