GM warns of intensified US competition as global carmakers seek American safe haven

General Motors has warned of intensifying competition in the US market as global carmakers increasingly view America as a safe haven. Despite shares gaining 35% over twelve months to close at $82.63, GM said it will operate as lean as possible. The company generates $185.53 billion in annual revenue but runs a thin 3.2% operating margin, leaving little cushion against price competition. GM faces additional pressure from Chinese manufacturers' low-cost production capacity and shifting Washington policies on fuel economy and vehicle restrictions. The carmaker is pushing software into its pickup truck business to improve margins, as full-size trucks remain the most defensible profit segment in American automaking. Hedge funds held $4.9 billion in GM stakes at the end of Q2 2026, down from $6.1 billion the previous quarter.

GM debuts Buick brand in Korea as show of commitment.

GM debuts Buick brand in Korea as show of commitment. By Lee Min-hyung * Published Sep 30, 2026 3:44 pm KST * Updated Sep 30, 2026 3:48 pm KST Carmaker stays tight-lipped on plans for eco-friendly vehicle production in Korea. General Motors (GM) Korea launched its premium auto brand Buick at an event in Seoul on Wednesday, signaling a stronger commitment to the Korean market amid persistent speculation over the carmaker's possible withdrawal from the country. The launch brings to four the number of brands GM Korea operates in Korea - Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick - as the automaker seeks to broaden its customer base. Buick's first model for the Korean market is the Electra E7 plug-in hybrid SUV, which combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor. "Now we are going to have four brands," GM Korea CEO Hector Villarreal said during a media showcase. "That means we will be able to appeal to all customer segments, and with that, we are expecting better results." "Having said that, what is important is the comfort, convenience and choices that we bring to the Korean market. This is what we are aiming for, and with the four brands, we are confident we are on the right path here," he added. However, Villarreal declined to directly answer questions about whether GM Korea plans to allocate more eco-friendly models to its Korean production facilities. For now, all E7 models to be sold in Korea will be imported from China. GM Korea has repeatedly faced speculation over a possible withdrawal from Korea due to its weak sales here and heavy reliance on exports to the United States. The company has sought to counter such concerns by emphasizing its sequential launches of auto brands and sharing concrete investment strategies in Korea. Villarreal said Korea will become Buick's second overseas market after North America, underscoring GM's efforts to strengthen its product lineup in Korea. Buick is positioning itself between mainstream and traditional luxury brands, emphasizing distinctive design, intuitive technology and premium comfort, GM Korea said. The company said it is targeting customers looking for a combination of sophisticated design, advanced technology and a premium interior experience. The Electra E7 embodies that position with a focus on comfort and convenience, rather than performance-oriented features. The E7 is powered by a plug-in hybrid system combining a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with a 165-kilowatt electric motor. It can travel up to 126 kilometers on electric power alone and offers a combined driving range of more than 1,000 kilometers, according to GM Korea. The carmaker will begin taking preorders for the E7 on Wednesday and plans to begin sales in November. The model will be offered in four trims, with prices ranging from around 43 million won ($31,700) to the mid-50 million won range.

LG-GM venture upgrades US plant for EV batteries.

LG-GM venture upgrades US plant for EV batteries. Published: Sept. 30, 2026 - 13:09:43 Lim Ye-jin Ultium Cells, the battery joint venture between LG Energy Solution and General Motors, will upgrade its Tennessee plant to produce a new generation of batteries designed to lower costs and boost energy density for future GM electric vehicles, the companies said Monday. The Spring Hill facility is expected to become the world's first to mass-produce lithium manganese-rich, or LMR, cells in a prismatic format. Ultium Cells said the technology offers about 33 percent higher energy density than lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, batteries at a comparable cost. Plant modifications will begin later this year and are scheduled for completion in 2028, creating 500 jobs alongside the facility's existing workforce of about 1,200. Investment in LMR production, LFP manufacturing and related plant improvements will total 1.36 trillion won ($1 billion) by 2030. LMR batteries use more manganese and fewer expensive metals such as cobalt, helping reduce costs while maintaining relatively high energy density. The project will broaden the Tennessee plant's output across electric vehicles and energy storage. The site began producing LFP cells in June for energy storage systems supplied to customers of LG Energy Solution Vertech, the Korean battery maker's energy storage integration subsidiary. Once LMR production starts, the plant's lineup will span high-nickel, LFP and LMR chemistries, with both pouch and prismatic formats. LG Energy Solution has worked on LMR technology for more than a decade, securing its first related patent in 2010. It had filed more than 300 patent applications by the first half of this year. The company and GM agreed in December 2024 to jointly develop prismatic cells and related materials, then announced plans in May 2025 to commercialize prismatic LMR batteries for GM vehicles. Ultium Cells President Injae Pahk, a former LG Energy Solution vice president, said the investment would help the venture respond to shifting demand and strengthen its position in the US battery industry. Driver gets reality check after asking if RAV4 hybrid can charge portable power station during outages.

Driver gets reality check after asking if RAV4 hybrid can charge portable power station during outages. "It's like trying to charge it using a hamster on a hamster wheel." by Aaron Goldstein September 30, 2026 Photo Credit: iStock Reddit users gave a sobering assessment to a portable power station owner looking at their plug-in hybrid as outage support. While a Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid can theoretically feed a large power station through its 12-volt outlet, the Redditors warned that the charge rate may be so limited that it is hard to treat it as a serious blackout backup. Here's what to know. The question surfaced in a post to Reddit's r/Jackery community from an owner trying to figure out whether that vehicle could do much to keep a Jackery HomePower 3600 topped up during a power loss. This original poster wrote, "I am curious how practical it would be to charge the Jackery from this 12v outlet in an extended power outage scenario. Has anyone done this with an EV or PHEV before, and what was your experience?" Most replies came down to the same point: the setup is possible, but not especially practical for a battery this large. One commenter who had looked into a similar Jackery model wrote, "To charge it from 0% to 100% would take about 30 hours. Yes 30, not a typo." Another commenter joked, "It's like trying to charge it using a hamster on a hamster wheel." More background. Even if the vehicle has a substantial battery pack, that does not mean the accessory outlet can deliver power quickly. In this case, commenters treated the 12V port as the real bottleneck rather than the plug-in hybrid's larger battery. TCD picks " Quince spotlight. These best-sellers from Quince deliver affordable, sustainable luxury for all The discussion also turned to a feature found on some higher-trim RAV4 plug-in hybrids: a rear 120-volt AC outlet rated at 1,500 watts. One commenter estimated that option could deliver about 800 to 900 watts to the HomePower 3600 when the unit is set to quiet charging mode. That was not available on the original poster's vehicle, however. As OP explained, "Not my trim level. It was thousands of dollars to step up, and I just didn't see the value for me." Instead of relying on the 12V outlet alone, several commenters pointed to faster vehicle-based charging hardware. One commenter said Jackery's DC-to-DC charger could bring a similar unit from empty to full in about 5.5 hours. Another commenter said a DC-DC converter installed in the car might produce around 500 to 600 watts, which would cut a recharge from empty to roughly 6 to 7 hours instead of around 30. Cadillac Escalade gets new trim, it should be the coolest of them all.

Cadillac Escalade gets new trim, it should be the coolest of them all. The 2027 Cadillac Escalade IQ Signature Sport will be positioned at the top of the lineup, sitting above the Luxury, Sport, Premium Luxury, and Premium Sport Published: 29 Sep 2026, 21:00 UTC - By: Photo: Cadillac Cadillac is adding a new trim to the 2027 Escalade IQ lineup. The upcoming hyper-exclusive, ultra-premium Signature Sport will sit at the top of the range, above the current top-of-the-line Premium Sport. It will bring a blacked-out grille, unique-design wheels, and an exclusive interior trim. Cadillac currently offers the Escalade IQ in four distinct trims, starting with the base Luxury (odd to name a Luxury trim "base!"), which is sold for $130,300. The Sport trim is a $130,800 deal, the Premium Luxury costs $150,600, while the current range-topping variant, the Premium Sport, sits at $151,100. There is no information about how much the Signature Sport will cost, but considering that it will be positioned at the top of the lineup, Autoevolution should expect to see it around the $155,000 mark for the standard-wheelbase variant and inching closer to $160,000 as far as the long-wheelbase variant is concerned. The new trim will bring major visual changes. GM Authority reports that the 2027 Cadillac Escalade IQ Signature Sport will get blacked-out elements for a meaner look. A black-painted roof and grille will be on the menu. The zero-tailpipe-emission model will ride on unique eight-spoke 24-inch Dark Android wheels with High Gloss Black inserts. Cadillac will not offer this exact rim style as an option on any lower trims as it will remain exclusive to the Signature Sport. Custom puddle lamps will also be standard, while they remain optional on lower trims. As for the cabin, Cadillac will come up with a blacked-out ambience with Haumea Carbon Fiber accents, also exclusive to this trim, alongside Santorini accents. Nouveauluxe upholstery with Sky Cool Gray contrasting stitching and faceted perforated inserts will cover the seats. The range-topping Escalade IQ retains the pillar-to-pillar 55-inch curved LED Horizon Display. The top trim is expected to get the dual-motor setup, which produces 750 horsepower (760 metric horsepower) and 785 pound-feet (1,064 Newton meters) of torque. The motors push the electric SUV from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 kph) in 4.7 seconds with the Velocity Max function engaged and all the way to a top speed of 112 mph (180 kph). The new Escalade IQ variant will retain the 205-kWh Ultium battery pack, which stores enough energy for a drive of up to 465 miles (748 kilometers) before it needs to be plugged in again. It wll also inherit the faster 19.2 kW Level 2 AC charging capability, which is standard on high-tier trims, alongside its 350 kW DC fast-charging capacity. The all-new Cadillac Escalade IQ Signature Sport is expected to go into production in December 2026 at General Motors' Factory Zero at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center. Deliveries should start in the first quarter of 2027. Liked the article? Follow Autoevolution to see more articles from autoevolution in your Google feeds.
