Eriez, a company specializing in separation technology, has unveiled its Copper Reduction Circuit for steel mills. The system is designed to help scrap processors produce premium low-copper shred for recycling purposes. The company says that conventional shredded scrap can contain more than 0.33% copper. This is an issue for processors because copper contaminates steel shred, leading to a lower quality of recycled steel. The company says the circuit can convert shredded scrap into a product containing less than 0.20% copper. "Steelmakers are under increasing pressure to maximize recycled-steel utilization without compromising product quality or furnace process performance," said Mike Shattuck, Eriez's business development manager for recycling. "The Copper Reduction Circuit addresses both sides of that equation. It enables processors to produce a cleaner, more consistent shred product. The result is greater flexibility in the furnace charge and more value recovered from every tonne of scrap." Process specifics. In the first stage, the ballistic separator uses magnetic attraction to separate processed shred into two material streams. The first stream, which usually represents around 75% of incoming material, consists of cleaner shred. The remaining fraction consists of a higher concentration of copper-bearing and composite material. This stream passes through a magnetic scrap drum which operates as a polishing stage. The drum removes up to 3% of nonferrous material and debris, which increases the yield for each melt. Ferrous material recovered at the polishing drum goes to the picking station, where copper-bearing materials are removed from the shred. Eriez to showcase inspection technologies at PACK EXPO 2026. See Eriez's PrecisionGuard X8 Metal Detector, X8-SF Simultaneous Frequency Metal Detector, SenseGuard X-ray Inspection System and a Recirculating Inspection System in Booth S-3954. Oct 15, 2026 This content was written and submitted by the supplier. It has only been modified to comply with this publication's space and style. Eriez will highlight inspection technologies at PACK EXPO International 2026, Oct. 18-21, at McCormick Place in Chicago. Visitors to Booth S-3954 in the South Hall can see live equipment demonstrations and meet with product specialists to discuss contaminant detection, product quality, and production efficiency. Featured technologies include the PrecisionGuard(TM) X8 Metal Detector, the new X8-SF Simultaneous Frequency Metal Detector, the SenseGuard(TM) X-ray Inspection System, and an Eriez Recirculating Inspection System. The PrecisionGuard X8 Metal Detector combines high sensitivity with intuitive operation to detect ferrous, nonferrous, and stainless steel contaminants. Its large touchscreen interface, automated product learning, and integrated data-capture capabilities simplify operation and reporting, while its rugged design supports demanding food processing environments. The X8 is available as a standalone detector or as part of a conveyorized inspection system. The X8-SF expands the PrecisionGuard X8 platform with simultaneous frequency technology that inspects products at multiple frequencies at once. It is designed for wet, salty, and conductive foods that can challenge conventional metal detectors. The X8-SF also features a robust construction, easy-to-use touchscreen interface, and integrated data-capture capabilities. The SenseGuard X-ray Inspection System detects contaminants, foreign objects, and irregularities such as glass, stone, bone, or dense plastic materials in product lines. X-ray detectors can inspect incoming material feeds or already packaged items, benefiting the entire downstream process. Attendees can also see the Eriez Recirculating Inspection System in operation. With vibratory feeders connected to metal detectors in a continuous loop, the system demonstrates how processors can use Eriez equipment to verify inspection results, manage rejected products, and maintain throughput without interrupting production. "Food processors need inspection solutions that reflect the realities of their production environments, from challenging product characteristics to the need for consistent throughput and clear documentation," said Emmett Keim, Global Product Manager, Inspection Systems, Eriez. "At PACK EXPO International, we will demonstrate how our inspection technologies can help processors strengthen contaminant control systems while supporting efficient day-to-day operations." High-capacity lifting magnets handle large parts.

High-capacity lifting magnets handle large parts. Eriez has added three new models to its SafeHold APL series of permanent lifting magnets. The APL-52, APL-70, and APL-100 expand the line's lifting capacity to 10,000 lbs. and support the handling of larger steel plates, cut parts, and fabricated components in plasma cutting, laser cutting, waterjet cutting, and other material handling environments. The crane-activated permanent lifting magnets allow operators to load and unload steel sheets and plates from a safer distance without manual magnet activation or release. They also eliminate the need for battery backup systems. The new models are suitable for a variety of metalworking applications, including steel fabrication, service center operations, and large-part machining.
