Requirements
  • At least 6 years of experience in Product Design, Interaction Design, User Experience, or equivalent roles.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating software design, system architecture, interaction principles, design systems, visual craft, shipped products, and the candidate's thinking and process.
  • Proficiency in product strategy, design ideation, wireframing, system architecture, design systems, workflow design, and visual execution.
  • Ability to design holistic user journeys across users, moments, and use cases, including edge cases, states, variations, and complex workflows spanning touchpoints.
  • Strong visual design across color, typography, layout, data visualization, and information hierarchy.
  • Understanding of technical constraints in interface design and ability to collaborate with engineering and technical teams.
  • Ability to incorporate users' physical and emotional states into the design process through user research, product testing, passive channels, desk research, and analytics.
  • Ability to work autonomously across projects, navigate ambiguity, prioritize impact, and make confident design decisions with incomplete data.
  • Ability to integrate cross-functional constraints and non-design perspectives, handle critical feedback, and resolve disagreements using rationale and user-centric framing.
  • Willingness to work on-site in New York City five days per week.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the end-to-end design of the Ember platform, from concept and exploration through design and launch of new features.
  • Expand the design language, evolve workflows across Firefly, shape the Ember experience across mobile and web, help define product architecture, and establish interface patterns.
  • Consider complex edge cases, possible failures, and operational constraints to support safety teams in making split-second decisions.
  • Architect software spanning end-to-end services and physical-to-digital journeys across multiple participants and devices.
  • Apply visual hierarchy, typography, layout composition, and information clarity to build and scale interface components.
  • Develop solutions rapidly, prioritize immediate impact while planning for future system evolution, and use iteration and testing to create clarity.
  • Plan and conduct user research with installers, operators, and end users, translate findings into product decisions, and advocate for user needs.
  • Work with founders, hardware teams, machine learning engineers, and software developers to establish design collaboration across the organization.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience designing complex workflow software, real-time collaboration tools, connected hardware, or agentic systems.
  • Experience at an enterprise hardware, Internet of Things, or connected-device company where the device and software ship together.
  • Ability to develop a new brand system with a high caliber of visual design polish.
  • Experience designing agentic workflows or artificial-intelligence-native products.
  • Experience planning, leading, and synthesizing primary research, especially co-design and User Experience landscape studies.
  • Versatility, willingness to learn new design tools and skills, and ability to adapt to shifting requirements.
  • Experience working and shipping quickly and iteratively.
  • Exposure to hospitality, healthcare, education, public safety, or other regulated or trust-driven markets.
  • Experience designing map-based, spatial, or three-dimensional interface elements.

Firefly sells a safety and emergency response platform to schools, hospitals, hotels, retailers, and workplaces, combining cloud software with connected hardware. Its Ember application handles site mapping, asset and people management, mass communication, roll call, response workflows, EMS integration, and an AI response agent, while its Emergency Readiness Suite adds panic buttons, detection devices, and noise analysis. Staff write response protocols in plain English instead of configuring rules, and the company says a site can be operational within 24 hours of onboarding. Unlike the disconnected alarm, camera, and notification systems most buildings run, it puts detection and coordinated response in one place. Its goal is to shorten response times by giving every site a single operating picture during an incident.
