About the job

Requirements
  • Expert-level engineering recruiting craft, including running complex technical searches end to end, delivering strong outcomes on hard-to-fill roles, maintaining candidate experience, and coaching the team.
  • Strong in-house recruiting experience and a record of partnering closely with Engineering Directors, VPs, CTOs, or similarly senior technical stakeholders.
  • Experience translating workforce plans and business priorities into clear, sequenced hiring strategies and actionable hiring plans, with operating rhythms, weekly tracking, early risk identification, and multiple tracks in parallel.
  • A track record of improving hiring systems at scale, including pipeline quality, pass-through rates, sourcing performance, or hiring predictability across teams or locations, including through AI and technology.
  • Experience leading calibration and quality across a large interviewer group, defining hiring bars, and supporting consistent hiring decisions.
  • Proven people-management experience in a high-growth, fast-scaling environment, while remaining hands-on in recruiting.
  • Fluency in English and readiness to work from Barcelona, London, or Kyiv.
Responsibilities
  • Own the Engineering hiring engine end to end by collaborating on workforce plans, clarifying hiring priorities, translating them into hiring strategies, and setting the team up to deliver against business needs.
  • Directly manage a team of TA Partners, owning their performance, development, direction, and priorities; coach them on search strategy and stakeholder management, and unblock execution.
  • Drive hiring outcomes across technical domains and hubs, taking accountability for progress, quality, and delivery across Engineering hiring in Barcelona, London, and Kyiv, while personally owning a couple of complex, high-impact searches.
  • Build and optimize hiring processes by identifying slowdowns, quality gaps, or unclear ownership and improving the process to hire top talent effectively.
  • Track progress through data by running a weekly hiring rhythm and using funnel data, pipeline quality, pass-through rates, time in stage, sourcing performance, and stakeholder feedback to assess results and make changes.
  • Lead calibration at scale by aligning engineering interviewers and hiring managers on a consistent hiring bar through structured calibration sessions, clear documentation, and ongoing reinforcement.
  • Identify risks and blockers early, bring clear recommendations, and work with TA, Engineering, and cross-functional partners to keep hiring moving.
  • Lead Engineering top-of-funnel strategy, shaping sourcing, talent mapping, talent intelligence, and employer branding with Marketing and Employer Brand, and building consistent, high-quality pipelines for priority roles.
  • Define ideal candidate profiles, sharpen scorecards, lead calibration, and improve consistency in candidate evaluation across engineering interviewers and hiring teams.
  • Elevate TA craft across the team by raising standards for candidate experience, sourcing quality, stakeholder management, data literacy, and business understanding.

What believers are saying

  • January 2026 funding gave Preply $150 million for AI and global expansion.
  • May 2026 tender offered employees liquidity at the same $1.2 billion valuation.
  • September 2026 research kept pushing 1:1 tutoring over self-study apps.

What critics are saying

  • June 2, 2026 outage took Preply offline for 28 minutes, exposing reliability risk.
  • Kyiv's 150-person office faces Russian strikes, sheltering, and power outages.
  • If learners accept AI-only speaking practice, Preply's tutor marketplace loses its reason to exist.

What makes Preply unique

  • Preply owns live, one-on-one tutoring across 90+ languages and 180 countries.
  • January 2026 Series D validated a human-led marketplace, not a content library.
  • AI copilots summarize lessons, generate homework, and improve tutor matching.

Preply hires ex-Stitch Fix, Rubrik people chief and Duolingo data head after $150M Series D

Preply, the online language learning marketplace, has hired two senior executives in the US. Lillian Reaume joins as chief people officer, and Bilal Zia joins as vice president of data science and analytics. Reaume previously held the same role at Stitch Fix and Rubrik, and worked at Amazon. Zia was head of data science and analytics at Duolingo and has also worked at Amazon and the World Bank. The hires follow a $150M Series D round led by WestCap earlier this year, which valued Preply at $1.2 billion. The company connects learners in 180 countries with more than 150,000 tutors teaching over 90 languages. "Their leadership across people and data will be essential as we scale globally and strengthen our presence in the US," said Kirill Bigai, co-founder and chief executive officer.

Preply hits $1.2B valuation with $150M Series D, achieving EBITDA profitability

Preply has achieved unicorn status with a $1.2 billion valuation following a $150 million Series D funding round. The online language learning marketplace connects over 100,000 tutors with learners in 180 countries and reported turning EBITDA positive in the 12 months prior to the funding. The company remains private and is not listed on any stock exchange. Unlike traditional EdTech platforms, Preply operates as a marketplace between independent tutors and students, avoiding the high costs of proprietary content creation. The platform faces operational risks including competition from AI and automated translation tools. A significant portion of its operations and workforce is based in Kyiv, Ukraine, creating potential business continuity concerns. Quality control across its decentralised tutor network also requires constant oversight.
