About the Job

Requirements

  • Evidence of building a technical team from a small core, including personally recruiting senior engineers who had other options and stayed.

  • Ability to critically evaluate information and ask questions when things do not make sense.
  • Ability to think strategically and take decisive action once necessary information has been gathered.
  • Energized by solving design engineering challenges.
  • Willingness to learn and understand new technology and technical processes.
  • Experience designing or selecting equipment for operation in harsh environments.
  • Ability to navigate an interconnected set of design and regulatory requirements and identify which can be removed.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities and prioritize them to contribute most to company success.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Ten or more years of relevant engineering experience, including experience leading engineering teams.
  • Eligibility to qualify for access to information subject to U.S. Export Controls; eligibility may also depend on meeting NRC requirements for access to Safeguards Information, typically including a pre-employment drug screen, fingerprinting, and criminal background check.

  • Own the requirements strategy; set and defend approaches to codes and standards, seismic design, and nuclear quality requirements using a graded approach and removing unjustified requirements.
  • Explicitly weigh risk against benefit in engineering decisions.
  • Understand regulatory margin.
  • Maintain technical positions under pressure when supported by evidence.
  • Partner with licensing to develop defensible regulatory positions, propose alternatives, and present them to the NRC.
  • Set technical standards for equipment specifications and vendor requirements, and hold the team and design partners to those standards.
  • Set direction, review, and when necessary perform nuclear analyses, including radionuclide inventories, dose rates, biological shielding, and waste classification.
  • Lead hazard and operability studies and design reviews.
  • Own equipment layout decisions to maximize process efficiency while considering operations, maintenance, and safety.
  • Identify and evaluate key technical project risks, develop solutions, and communicate them to senior management.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation is maintained.
  • Hire, retain, develop, and lead the engineering team and discipline leads, owning their performance.

About the Company

SHINE Technologies

Fusion-based neutron production for isotopes

SHINE Technologies produces neutrons using fusion-based technology for practical applications in medicine, industry, and security. Its neutron source supports advanced industrial inspection and the production of medical isotopes used in diagnostic imaging and cancer treatment, as well as contraband detection. The neutron source operates through SHINE’s four-phase pathway to fusion energy production, enabling reliable, commercially viable neutron production rather than basic research. The company differentiates itself by focusing on immediate, real‑world deployments of fusion-based neutron production for diverse customers, guided by industry veterans on its board and a growth-oriented strategy to expand market applications. The goal is to commercialize fusion-powered neutron production to create safer, healthier, and cleaner outcomes while expanding its market reach in medical, industrial, and security sectors.
