Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Healthcare or related field and at least six (6) months of experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and/or supporting adults or children with complex social-emotional, mental health, medical or behavior support needs in a group or individual setting (home program, day treatment center, school, ABA environment, etc.)
  • High School Diploma or its educational equivalent and two (2) years of experience working with individuals with I/DD and/or in a related human services or healthcare role as described above including or supplemented by six (6) months of supervisory or lead experience, which includes experience performing administrative and scheduling support duties and directing staff
  • At least four (4) years of experience in a direct care role (e.g. DSP) in a YAI program in good standing
  • Must hold foundational certifications for current service setting: Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention – Revised (SCIP-R), CPR (issued by American Red Cross or American Heart Association) and YAI-issued Approved Medication Administration Personnel (AMAP) certification for residential assignments or Day Services Model Mentorship Training for day assignments
  • Current YAI employees changing settings must obtain AMAP (for new residential assignment) or Day Services Model Mentorship Training (for new day assignment) and any additional certifications as required by program assignment and persons supported within three (3) months of appointment
  • Newly hired employees must obtain (and maintain) required YAI certifications based on setting and program within six (6) months of appointment; and​
  • Must maintain foundational certifications (as described above) and any required program-specific certifications; for DSPs changing programs/settings, must obtain and maintain any applicable certifications within three (3) months of appointment; or
  • Satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training; however, all newly hired employees must be at least 18 years old and must obtain (and maintain) required YAI certifications based on setting within six months of appointment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to appropriately document services provided and summarize progress and to effectively convey information across various levels and with external providers or circles of support.
  • Ability and willingness to lead, direct and teach others technical skills and/or knowledge, both on-the-job and through formal training in group or individual settings.
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite and ability to quickly learn electronic systems including Workday and electronic medical record/documentation systems (DA, etc.) to complete tasks.
  • Enthusiasm for working with people with I/DD, willingness to take initiative and ability to demonstrate positivity, patience empathy and compassion in all interactions.
  • Ability and willingness to assist with a variety of supports and ADLs, including regular exposure to and handling of various bodily fluids with limited direction and in accordance with documented plans.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities while quickly addressing changing needs in collaboration with program leadership.
  • Ability to work beyond regularly scheduled hours/shift and/or to report to work as scheduled on holidays, in inclement weather or during other emergencies to maintain minimum coverage requirements of program, unless otherwise authorized.
  • Ability to remain calm, act assertively and display professional competence and good judgment in stressful situations, including with challenging individuals or behaviors and work in a high energy, fast-paced environment.
  • For assignments that require transporting persons supported by vehicle, must hold or obtain valid Driver’s License and Van certification (based on position/location/program).
  • Ability to meet essential physical demands of position including frequent walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling and reaching with hands and arms; use hands to handle, finger or feel objects, tools or controls; assisting with lifting/moving individuals of any weight with assistance of mechanical lifts or other equipment and/or pushing individuals in wheelchairs; lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds on occasion; having the physical capacity to work with and implement emergency interventions as per the person’s Behavior Support Plan if/as needed, including lifting/moving individuals of any weight with or without assistance of equipment and/or other staff.
Responsibilities
  • Performs all duties of a Direct Support Professional (DSP 1 - 3) as to ensure the overall supervision, protection and care of persons supported in assigned program, assisting in maximizing their strengths, interests and abilities while upholding their personal rights and facilitating activities that provide social capital and connections to the community in a variety of settings.
  • Ensures health, wellness and safety by providing appropriate supervision of the people we support and takes the lead during crisis situations, effectively deescalating situations relating to individuals, facility or other environmental issues, demonstrating the OPWDD Core Competencies and directing DSPs while adhering to applicable policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Ensures implementation of person-centered, individualized plans following levels of supervision and safeguards including protective oversight (IPOPs), as well as Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), Staff Action and/or Life Plans for all people we support, demonstrating a strong understanding of and effectively modeling and training other direct care staff on the intentions, related interventions and goals of the plans.
  • Models professionalism at all times by maintaining a strong allegiance to the persons supported, proactively prioritizing and completing regular duties with limited direction while willingly accepting changes to assignments, programs and/or service delivery settings and approaching others in a positive, supportive and courteous manner.
  • Assists Program Supervisor with staffing and coverage for assigned program, which includes entering and modifying schedules in electronic systems to ensure accurate and complete information needed to maintain minimum coverage by qualified staff; assists with securing coverage for shifts with consideration for scheduled time off, unscheduled absences and operational needs, including community or off-site activities and trainings and escalates staffing concerns to supervisor accordingly.
  • Assists Program Supervisor with oversight of financial systems for program, including maintaining personal ledgers for the people we support and records of program expenditures, which includes regularly monitoring and reconciling petty cash by completing data entry and reviewing, totaling and documenting receipts and/or completing transmittal in electronic systems, to ensure fiscal responsibility, integrity, and adherence to budgetary guidelines.
  • Coordinates supply-related needs in collaboration with Program Supervisor and other program staff, assisting with maintaining, ordering and appropriately documenting inventory and storage of food, household and toiletry supplies, including over the counter medications, in accordance with all applicable requirements.
  • Reports maintenance, upkeep and safety concerns observed at YAI facilities to Program Supervisor or appropriate designee and assists with coordinating resolutions, as directed.
  • Supports regular and ad hoc facility-related checks as requested by supervisor, reviewing and confirming that program is meeting all applicable requirements by reviewing logs, files and folders and tracking or obtaining documentation (e.g. van maintenance, inspections, fire drills) to ensure complete, timely and accurate information and following up with appropriate parties to obtain necessary information as needed.
  • Assists Program Supervisor with ensuring completion and appropriate documentation of all applicable training, education and credentials for program staff, including program-specific trainings, in electronic and paper files in accordance with all applicable requirements
  • Provides effective leadership on shift serving as lead in the absence of Program Supervisor, which may include overnight shifts, supporting quality care and positive outcomes by consistently applying all rules, standards and policies with staff, assigning duties and regularly assessing work performance, actively identifying operational or staff issues, and making responsible and informed decisions when needed, escalating concerns to appropriate leadership for assistance and/or handling and performing all duties of direct care leadership roles on a temporary basis, when needed.
  • Completes and maintains all necessary trainings and certifications, including specialized trainings based on program and position to ensure compliance with YAI policies and all applicable rules or regulations and applies skills.
  • May support the region or agency as a whole through active participation in various committees, representing program, service delivery setting or region as primary liaison and/or participates in special projects, including agency-wide initiatives and fundraising efforts.
  • May facilitate formal agency trainings under supervision of YAI Knowledge leadership following prescribed curriculums, serving as a YAI-certified trainer in one of more areas including, but not limited to SCIP-R, CPR, Preservice, etc.
  • For certain assignments, may be required to operate YAI motor vehicle to transport individuals to and/or from programs, residences, community or other locations on a daily (or other regular) basis with appropriate credentials.
  • Complies with all Federal, State, Local and other relevant regulatory agency requirements, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Performs all other duties, as assigned.
