About the job

Requirements
  • You have experience designing architectures with strong interface boundaries and separation of concerns, and work from SOLID principles.
  • You know Ruby on Rails well, with probably at least 5 years of Rails experience or 7 years with a similar web framework such as Spring, Django, or Node.js.
  • You have designed performant data models in MySQL, know how to structure data in a relational database management system, understand index use and denormalization, and have experience debugging and fixing slow queries.
  • You already build with AI tools and have formed opinions about where they help and where they waste time.
  • You have product instinct and consider users' goals before designing, and are comfortable advocating for reduced scope.
Responsibilities
  • Work with product, user experience, and engineering colleagues to understand customer problems and lead work to solve them, contributing opinions on what to build as well as how to build it.
  • Talk to customers by joining calls, reading support threads, and observing how teams use OpsLevel, and use those insights to inform product work.
  • Produce well-tested code and reviews that help others learn.
  • Use coding agents in daily work and improve the context, tooling, and guardrails that support them in the codebase.
  • Build the internal software factory that routes work from Linear to agents and back to human review, including metrics to assess its effectiveness.
  • Take ownership of shipped work, identify technical debt, and propose architectural improvements.
  • Find, propose, and promote best practices in Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, and database design.
  • Build private and public GraphQL APIs for the OpsLevel front end, CLI, and customer automation.
  • Lead technical explorations and build prototypes to validate solutions before committing to them.
  • Ship work on a predictable cadence and notify the team early when work is off track.
  • Mentor colleagues and invest in their growth.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation and troubleshoot across Ruby on Rails, Vue.js, GraphQL, and MySQL.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience building agent-based tools beyond autocomplete, such as an evaluation harness, custom tool, Model Context Protocol server, or internal workflow used by others.
  • Experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
  • Experience with Rails job systems such as Sidekiq.
  • Deep knowledge of MySQL.
  • Experience scaling a web application to thousands of users and millions of events.
  • Knowledge of in-memory data stores such as Redis.
  • Understanding of work at companies that run hundreds of applications or microservices.

About the company

OpsLevel provides a SaaS platform that helps engineering teams manage microservices more efficiently. Its core feature is an auto-populating service catalog that inventories infrastructure, promoting consistency across projects and teams. It also offers automated checks that produce quantitative metrics to encourage engineers to improve their codebase and adhere to standards. The service targets engineering teams in organizations running microservices and operates in the DevOps space, focusing on collaboration between development and IT operations. OpsLevel likely uses a subscription-based pricing model, with fees varying by user count or service level. Founders John Laban and Kenneth Rose bring DevOps experience from PagerDuty, and security is a priority with built-in safeguards and responsible vulnerability disclosure. Overall, Op sLevel aims to help teams maintain high-quality code and consistent infrastructure across distributed systems.
