Requirements
  • Demonstrated proficiency with mechanical, thermal, and spectroscopic techniques.
  • Expertise in assessing the fundamental properties of polymers and materials.
  • Experience identifying and quantifying materials and additives used to manufacture plastic- and paper-based packaging.
  • Knowledge of analytical methods used to quantify materials, additives, and coatings at the molecular level.
  • A record of successful new analytical testing method development and scientific report writing.
  • A minimum of 5 years of deep technical analysis experience in plastics and paper packaging materials.
  • Experience managing a team of analytical scientists and laboratory technicians.
  • A Master’s degree in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Packaging Science, Chemical Engineering, Paper Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems and digital data systems.
  • Familiarity with recyclable and sustainable packaging technologies.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop the analytical and physical testing laboratory supporting flexible packaging across plastic films and paper substrates.
  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team by providing coaching, performance management, and training.
  • Set team priorities and balance workloads.
  • Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, including scheduling, safety, and resource allocation.
  • Establish and track laboratory key performance indicators.
  • Manage laboratory budgeting and equipment planning.
  • Provide direction and oversight for chemical, thermal, rheological, optical, and physical property testing.
  • Lead method development and validation, and ensure standard operating procedure adherence.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for customer complaints and out-of-specification results.
  • Work closely with Operations, Research and Development, Quality, and Commercial teams.
  • Drive improvements in automation, data systems, and statistical rigor.
  • Manage and prioritize test requests from multiple business units and stakeholders.
  • Set goals and tasks to manage and execute multiple projects with competing deadlines.
Desired Qualifications
  • Expertise with thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, mechanical load frame testing, and optical microscopy.
  • Understanding of secondary and tertiary packaging test methods.
  • Knowledge of polymer and materials processing techniques commonly used within the packaging industry.
  • Ability to collaborate on multidisciplinary teams to reach research and business goals.
  • Flexibility to manage and prioritize test requests from multiple business units and stakeholders.

Novolex names new chief commercial transformation and strategy officer. Dan Debicella will work alongside Chuck Whittington, Novolex's chief transformation officer, who is due to retire. Packaging group Novolex has appointed Dan Debicella as chief commercial transformation and strategy officer. He will oversee the company's group-wide growth plan, help advance its commercial agenda and support integration work. Debicella will work alongside Chuck Whittington, Novolex's chief transformation officer, who is due to retire at the end of the year after more than 33 years at the company. Whittington will stay on during the handover period to support continuity in integration efforts. According to the company, Debicella will work with teams across the organisation to reinforce commercial functions and introduce more uniform sales processes, aiming to "accelerate" growth. Novolex CEO and chairman Stan Bikulege said: "Dan is a proven transformation leader who delivers measurable results. "He has strengthened commercial execution and scaled performance across multiple companies. He will sharpen our commercial capabilities and help us move faster, execute better and deliver stronger outcomes for our customers, employees and stakeholders." Debicella has more than 25 years of experience in transformation and growth roles in several industries. Most recently, he was president of the Graphics Solutions Division at SGS & Co. Before that, he oversaw enterprise strategy and commercial transformation efforts at Serta Simmons Bedding and Young's Market Company. Earlier in his career, Debicella worked at Bridgewater Associates, PepsiCo and McKinsey & Company on strategy and transformation programmes.
