About the job

Requirements
  • PhD or Master of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, or maintaining large-scale machine learning training infrastructure.
  • Strong proficiency with PyTorch or JAX and experience running training workloads on GPUs or TPUs.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts, including parallelism strategies, fault tolerance, and synchronization.
Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and scale systems that enable large-scale reinforcement learning for foundation models.
  • Focus on TPU-based training with JAX and develop robust, high-performance reinforcement learning pipelines that support distributed actor/learner architectures, efficient experience replay, and large-scale environment execution.
  • Work across the full stack of reinforcement learning training systems, from low-level performance tuning and compiler optimization to cluster-level orchestration and resource management.
  • Ensure training pipelines are efficient, reliable, reproducible, and observable so research teams can iterate quickly and explore more complex reinforcement learning environments and models.
  • Improve the scalability, throughput, and stability of reinforcement learning experiments.
Desired Qualifications
  • Practical experience developing or optimizing training loops, reinforcement learning pipelines, or large-scale model-training frameworks.
  • Strong software engineering skills in Python, emphasizing reliability, debuggability, and high-performance execution.
  • Deep experience with PyTorch or JAX internals, XLA, debugging, and performance profiling on GPU or TPU architectures.
  • Expertise in distributed reinforcement learning training patterns, including actor/learner architectures, experience replay, and parallel environment execution.
  • Experience building training services, orchestration tools, or automated pipelines for large-scale experiments.
  • Proven success diagnosing bottlenecks in large-scale machine learning jobs, including I/O, input pipelines, kernel performance, memory, and compilation.
  • Familiarity with reinforcement-learning-specific infrastructure requirements, such as actor/learner architectures, experience replay systems, and large-scale environment execution.
  • Strong software engineering practices, including code quality, design reviews, testing, observability, and continuous integration/continuous delivery.
  • Experience working with cloud-scale clusters or specialized accelerators, including TPU v5/v6, GPUs, or custom hardware.
  • Contributions to machine learning frameworks, distributed training libraries, or high-performance computing systems.

About the company

What believers are saying

  • Business demand is growing: Apple reported $109.4 billion revenue in the June 2026 quarter, up 16% year over year.
  • Eligible US employees get learning support: Apple reimburses career-related tuition and runs Apple University classes.
  • Services earn richer margins: Apple reported 75.6% services gross margin in the June 2026 quarter, versus 40.1% for products.

What critics are saying

  • Assembly depends on Asian partners: Apple outsources substantially all final hardware assembly, reducing direct control over production.
  • iPhone concentrates demand risk: the product generated 49.6% of Apple revenue in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Student support shifts take evenings: Apple College Advisors typically work three evening shifts and one weekend shift weekly.

What makes Apple unique

  • Its chips link hardware and software: Apple designs M-series processors and developer frameworks tuned to their unified memory.
  • Stores double as service hubs: Apple combines device sales, Genius Bar technical help and in-person learning sessions.
  • It owns a spatial operating system: Apple Vision Pro runs visionOS, controlled through eyes, hands and voice.

Apple opens $1,999 iPhone Duo pre-orders on October 16 as stock hits record $347.93

Apple will open pre-orders for its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, on October 16 at 8:00 EDT. The book-style device starts at $1,999 and launches officially on October 23. Buyers can use Apple's "Get Ready" process from October 12 to choose a configuration and arrange payment and trade-in details. Reports of production issues point to limited early supply. The Duo has a 5.4-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch folding display. Apple's stock hit a record $347.93 on October 13, up about 27% this year. Apple reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16.4% year-on-year. It reports fourth-quarter results on November 2.

Chip selloff spreads from Asia to US as Apple launches smart home push and Meta unveils new AI model

A chip selloff is accelerating as pressure spreads from Asia to the US, according to Bloomberg's Ed Ludlow. Apple has released a new line of smart home devices, led by its HomeView Hub. The hub is the centrepiece of Apple's push to challenge Amazon and Google in that space. Meta has also released a new AI model, which it says has "frontier capabilities." The company is vying to take on OpenAI and Anthropic.

Apple launches smart home range with $349.95 lock, $249.95 video doorbell and thermostat

Apple has unveiled the Apple Home Collection, a smart home range that includes a smart deadbolt lock, video doorbell, thermostat, temperature sensor, and security cameras. The products go on sale in December. The devices work with HomeView, Apple's new smart home hub. Apple built them with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric, a shift for a company that has long made its own smart home accessories. The $349.95 lock supports ultra-wideband, which detects proximity more precisely than Bluetooth and could unlock the door as an authorised user approaches. The wired video doorbell costs $249.95 and sends alerts to Apple devices. A floodlight camera, priced at $399.95, combines exterior lighting with video monitoring. The range could help Apple compete with Amazon Ring and Google Nest.

Apple unveils $299 HomeView, its first smart display, with Apple Watch-style faces

Apple has announced the HomeView, its first smart display, at an event in New York City on Tuesday. The 7-inch device costs $299 and goes on sale November 13, with preorders open now. It comes in two versions, a speaker base and a wall-mounted display, both at the same price. The launch is part of Apple's effort to revive its lagging smart home ecosystem. The square screen resembles a large Apple Watch, with swipeable, customisable "faces" that show a clock, photos, weather, or Snoopy animations. Swiping up opens a home screen with apps and widgets, running on new HomeView software rather than iOS. There is no App Store, only a curated app selection, including FaceTime, Messages, Safari, and Spotify. Setup requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

Apple bets on the smart home to defend its iPhone moat against AI devices

Apple will hold a "Welcome Home" event at 9:00 ET, where it is expected to unveil smart-home devices. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the company will detail HomeView, a hub for controlling Apple devices in the home. The push targets a market where Apple has trailed Amazon and Google. It also responds to new AI hardware from rivals, including Meta's Charm device and VR glasses, and OpenAI's plans for a device with iPhone designer Jony Ive. Such products could end tech companies' reliance on the iPhone for distribution. Apple's stock is up more than 25% this year, ahead of Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft. Over the past month, Meta is up more than 11%, while Apple is up just over 2%.
