Fleet safety programs that only flag mistakes miss the bigger win. New fleet data and behavioral research show that programs combining corrective coaching with real-time feedback and recognition drive faster, more durable improvements in safe driving - and give carriers a scalable way to retain drivers in a tight labor market. Do safety programs that recognize safe driving actually change behavior? Yes, and the effect size is large. Richards Building Supply added a recognition layer to its existing safety program, giving drivers near-real-time visibility into their performance, personalized goals, and acknowledgment for safe decisions. In 60 days, overall safe driving behaviors improved 41 percent. The program did not replace coaching on risky events - it added a feedback loop that let drivers see what they were already doing well. Behavioral science supports the approach. Lasting behavior change rarely comes from a single type of intervention. In fleet safety, that means choosing between a program that coaches drivers and one that recognizes them is a false choice. The strongest programs do both - corrective coaching when a driver makes a mistake, and ongoing positive reinforcement to help safer behaviors become habits. The distinction matters during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, but recognition does not need to happen only once a year. It can be built into the systems and programs drivers use every day. Geotab launched a "Well Earned" program this week that brings driver stories and recognition together, giving fleets ready-made ways to recognize drivers in September, next month, next February, and every day after that. What most safety programs communicate to drivers - and what they miss. Most fleet safety programs are built around identifying mistakes. A driver triggers a harsh-braking event, a speeding alert, a following-distance violation. The system flags it. A manager reviews it. The driver hears about it. The loop closes. That loop is necessary - carriers need to know when risky behavior happens and address it before it becomes a crash or a CSA violation. But if the only time a driver hears from the safety program is when something went wrong, the program is talking about the driver, not to them. The driver becomes the subject of the safety program, not a participant in it. A program that also surfaces what drivers are doing well - miles without a hard brake, days without a speeding event, consistent following distance - gives drivers a reason to engage with the system when there is no correction to deliver. It shifts the program from punitive to developmental. Drivers see their performance, understand where they can improve, and recognize the safe decisions they make every day. For carriers running an AI-native carrier TMS built around load-lifecycle automation, integrating safety-program data with dispatch workflows can surface driver performance in real time, letting dispatchers assign loads to drivers with the cleanest recent records and flag coaching opportunities before they escalate to violations. The program does the recognition automatically, based on the data it is already collecting. That scalability matters in a tight labor market. Drivers who feel recognized and see their performance improving are more likely to stay. Drivers who only hear from the safety program when they make a mistake are more likely to disengage - or leave for a carrier that gives them more feedback. The takeaway for fleet managers. If you are a fleet manager, consider what your current safety program communicates to your drivers. Does it primarily identify their mistakes? Or does it help them see their performance, understand where they can improve, and recognize the safe decisions they make every day? If the answer is the former, you are not alone - most legacy safety programs were built around exception reporting, not engagement. But the data from Richards Building Supply and the behavioral-science research both point in the same direction: programs that combine corrective coaching with ongoing feedback and positive reinforcement drive faster improvements in safe driving and give carriers a more scalable way to retain drivers. Better for drivers, better for fleet managers, and ultimately better safety outcomes. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is a good moment to start - but the opportunity goes beyond this week. By designing safety programs that recognize what drivers do well while helping them improve where it matters, carriers can create an experience drivers want to engage with, not one they only hear from when something goes wrong.

This fills a gap in Geotab's Australian product set. Heavy vehicle fleets using Geotab telematics that also needed Smart OBM to access some networks previously had to add a separate supplier to meet those requirements. Under the approved pairing, Geotab's GO9-LTM device in hardware variants D, E and F is combined with Airtec's AXS Series Smart OBM system. Smart OBM systems use sensors to measure axle group and gross mass and send that information through approved compliance channels. For fleet operators, the practical issue is road access as much as compliance. Some heavy vehicle access schemes require Smart OBM for vehicles seeking entry to restricted routes, including parts of the Higher Mass Limits and Performance Based Standards networks. The combined system also gives operators a single place to manage vehicle telematics and certified mass information, reducing the need for separate systems across dispatch, compliance and safety functions. Compliance gap Australia's heavy vehicle rules place particular weight on monitored access, approved devices and auditable data.
