Roku Q3 preview: adjusted EBITDA seen at $163M, down 36% as tariff refund drops out

Roku reports third-quarter results after the market closes on November 2, with no earnings call and no outlook. Wall Street expects adjusted EBITDA of about $163 million, roughly 36% below the $254.3 million of the second quarter, which included a one-off tariff refund. Consensus revenue of about $1.41 billion implies growth of around 17%, down from 21.93% in the second quarter. Without the refund, Roku's Devices gross margin would have been negative 7.6%, not 20.1%, as memory chip and tariff costs weigh. Fox Corporation reports earlier that day. Its pending deal for Roku offers 0.9693 Fox Class A shares plus $96 in cash per share, worth about $162.17. Roku shares closed at $160.06 on October 22. Fox still targets a close in the first half of 2027.

Roku's major fall update: Roku OS 16 is rolling out now to Roku tvs & Roku players.

Roku's major fall update: Roku OS 16 is rolling out now to Roku tvs & Roku players. October 19, 2026 Roku has initiated a gradual, phased rollout of its latest operating system update, Roku OS 16, making the software available to a limited number of device owners in the early stages of distribution. The update, which had been in testing with app developers, is now reaching select streaming sticks, players, and Roku-powered smart televisions as the company expands availability in a measured approach rather than a full simultaneous push to its entire user base. This controlled rollout allows for monitoring of performance across different hardware configurations before broader deployment. At the core of Roku OS 16 are a series of enhancements aimed at improving visual presentation and app interactivity on supported devices. The update introduces an Effect node that enables applications to apply rounded corners, borders, and color gradients to images and rectangular elements by leveraging the device's graphics hardware. These changes produce sharper, more contemporary visuals while reducing the processing load on the system. On hardware that does not fully support the new effects, content continues to display normally without disruption. Developers can also customize the highlight indicator that appears around selected items in grid layouts, allowing the focus indicator to better match the shape and style of surrounding content instead of standing out awkwardly. Additional tools improve fluid motion and real-time capabilities. A new animation system handles smooth transitions for groups of numbers, supporting gradual shifts in elements such as borders or colors rather than abrupt jumps. The platform adds a unique user identifier that apps can use to recognize specific customers even before any purchase occurs, helping maintain consistent preferences, recommendations, and account details across services. Real-time features expand with support for server-sent events, which allow remote services to push updates such as live scores or notifications as they occur, and WebSocket connections that enable two-way communication for functions including live chat or continuous data streams. Behind the scenes, Roku OS 16 includes practical refinements for stability and development. Conditional settings that remain undefined now default to off, simplifying the inclusion of optional features in shared code. Drawing commands that place points, lines, or rectangles now report whether they succeeded or failed, providing clearer feedback. Controls for texture loading help manage memory more efficiently, and the maximum depth for stacked program operations has been increased. The update also retires documentation for a field relevant only to long-discontinued hardware and phases out an older method for handling client certificates in favor of more secure verification approaches. Early reports from users who have received the update describe a handful of issues, though these appear limited in scope based on available accounts. Some owners have encountered problems when attempting to cast their screen from Windows computers, with the connection failing or behaving inconsistently in certain cases. Separately, a small number of reports note that the clock has disappeared from the Roku home screen following the update. These concerns have not been widely documented and seem confined to particular device models or configurations rather than representing a universal problem. Roku has not issued a broad public statement detailing the status of these reports as the phased distribution continues. Roku has a history of activating certain capabilities through later server-side adjustments even after an operating system version reaches devices, meaning additional changes tied to Roku OS 16 could surface over time for those who receive the update. As the slow rollout progresses to more owners, the visual refinements and improved connectivity options are expected to contribute to more polished app experiences across the Roku platform, though the full extent of user-facing improvements will depend on how developers implement the new tools in their channels. Owners who have not yet received the software can continue checking for updates through the system settings menu as distribution expands in stages. BofA upgrades Fox to Buy on $22B Roku deal, sees over 30% upside

Bank of America has upgraded Fox Corp. to Buy from Underperform, saying Fox's agreed purchase of Roku "fundamentally changes the strategic and financial narrative" for the company. Fox agreed in June to pay $160 a share for Roku, valuing it at about $22 billion. Analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich raised her price target to $85 from $54, implying more than 30% upside. She said Roku answers Fox's streaming question, and that fears of an early, costlier NFL rights deal have eased. The bank estimates $530 million in extra revenue in its base case, and more than $1 billion in its bull case. Most would come from selling more Roku video ads and bundling Fox One. Risks include a pricier NFL renewal and competition from Walmart-owned Vizio.

Roku says its new home screen was a major success.

Roku says its new home screen was a major success. October 11, 2026 Roku presented detailed performance data at its annual Developer Summit indicating that the company's redesigned home screen has delivered substantial improvements in user engagement since its rollout. The updated interface, which began reaching more than 100 million streaming households earlier in 2026 as the most significant overhaul of the experience in more than a decade, has produced measurable lifts across key navigation and discovery metrics. Company representatives outlined the results during sessions focused on content discovery, platform evolution, and opportunities for app partners. According to the announcement, since the launch, the new Roku interface has driven a 60 percent higher click-through rate. It has also increased deep-page navigation by 17 percent and boosted category visits by 83 percent. These figures reflect stronger interaction with personalized recommendations, Quick Access rows that adapt to individual viewing habits, expanded destinations such as For You and Subscriptions, and intelligence-driven Top Picks sections that surface relevant titles upon device startup. The changes were designed to reduce the time viewers spend searching across multiple services and to place desired content more immediately in front of them, addressing a long-standing friction point in streaming where users often browse even when they already know what they want to watch. The redesign builds on research showing that a large majority of streamers prefer to power on their devices and immediately see programming aligned with their interests. By elevating personalized rows, streamlining access to frequently used apps, and introducing more dynamic category hubs, the home screen encourages deeper exploration rather than limiting activity to a static grid of app icons. The elevated click-through rates suggest that viewers are more readily selecting promoted content, recommendations, and advertisements that remain visible without requiring additional scrolling. Increased deep-page navigation indicates that users are moving beyond the initial view into fuller catalogs and secondary destinations, while the sharp rise in category visits points to greater use of organized hubs for genres, live programming, free content, and cross-subscription discovery. These engagement gains carry implications for both viewers and the broader ecosystem of developers and content providers. Higher interaction rates can translate into more sessions initiated within partner apps, greater opportunities for subscription conversions through Roku Pay, and improved performance for advertising placements that appear on the home screen. Roku's platform business, which includes advertising and subscription-related revenue, has grown in importance as device hardware margins face pressure, and a more effective discovery surface supports that shift by increasing the value of inventory and the visibility of partner content. Developers attending the summit received updates on tools that allow greater coordination with the home screen, including options for dynamic layouts tied to seasonal events or viewer signals. The home screen functions as the primary entry point for tens of millions of daily activations in the United States alone, making its design central to how audiences encounter programming from major services as well as smaller channels. The reported improvements arrive amid ongoing competition among connected TV platforms for primacy in content discovery, where control of the interface can influence which titles surface first and how advertising is delivered. Roku has continued to expand related features, including further personalization elements and experimental tools through initiatives such as Roku Labs, while preparing additional home screen refinements for gradual rollout. With Roku prioritizing behavioral data already collected from viewing patterns, Roku aims to deliver relevant suggestions without requiring new explicit inputs from users. The metrics shared at the Developer Summit provide an early quantitative view of how these adjustments have performed at scale following the initial deployment. As the company advances subsequent updates centered on layout flexibility and more adaptive visual elements, both consumer satisfaction and partner outcomes will continue to depend on how effectively the home screen converts attention into sustained viewing and monetization activity across the platform. Battle of the Streaming Stars series coming to Roku.

Battle of the Streaming Stars series coming to Roku. Roku today announced Battle of the Streaming Stars, a new competition series from Peyton Manning's Omaha Productions, with Terry Crews set to host and executive produce. Roku has ordered two specials, the first launching on October 23 and the second in early 2027 exclusively on The Roku Channel. Nearly five decades after IMG's Battle of the Network Stars first brought television's biggest personalities together for an unforgettable clash of networks, Battle of the Streaming Stars brings the format into the streaming era. Comedians, actors, reality stars, and creators from audiences' favorite shows will trade the couch for the field, going head-to-head in larger-than-life challenges inspired by the shows and movies people love. In each hour-long special, three teams of four battle it out over several rounds for a single prize: the Golden Roku Remote. Kay Adams will join the competition from the sidelines, bringing her sports expertise and on-camera energy to the action while capturing the strategy and smack talk. Yvette Nicole Brown will serve as the competition's referee, keeping the stars - and their rivalries - in check. Competitors will be announced in the coming weeks. "'Battle of the Network Stars' was an iconic celebration of television, bringing together the personalities audiences loved," said Brian Tannenbaum, Head of Roku Originals, Roku Media. "With 'Battle of the Streaming Stars,' Vital Thrills is taking that spirit and reinventing it for how audiences stream entertainment today. "Together with Peyton Manning and Omaha Productions, Terry Crews, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Kay Adams, we're bringing some of streaming's most entertaining personalities off the screen and onto the field for a competition that's big, funny, unexpected, and uniquely Roku." "Battle of the Network Stars' was must-watch TV in the 80s. We're excited to team up with Roku to bring that same concept back for the streaming era," said Peyton Manning, Co-Founder, Omaha Productions. "Terry, Yvette, and Kay are great, and you won't want to miss the stars battling it out for the Golden Remote." "'In the same spirit as the original series, anything can happen in Battle of the Streaming Stars. Some of the funniest, most competitive people in entertainment finally get to prove who's the best athlete in the room, and trust me, egos are going to get tested," said Terry Crews. "Coming together with Yvette, Kay, and the teams at Roku and Omaha Productions to create this show has been incredible, and I can't wait for people to see who takes home that Golden Remote." Battle of the Streaming Stars is produced by Omaha Productions with Peyton Manning, Jamie Horowitz, Colin Campbell, and Dan Gati executive producing. The project is overseen by Sean Boyle and Louisa L. Friedman on behalf of Roku Originals. Keith Geller serves as the showrunner.
