About the job

Requirements
  • A Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience designing and implementing low-level motor or actuator control systems, with less experience accepted for an advanced degree focused on controls.
  • Strong fundamentals in classical controls, including proportional-integral-derivative control, cascaded control loops, feedforward, and frequency-domain or state-space analysis.
  • Experience with time-synchronized torque control of motors, including brushless DC or permanent-magnet synchronous motors, field-oriented control, and current or torque control, or other electromechanical actuator force control.
  • Experience working with encoders, strain gauges, or other analog or digital sensors.
  • Hands-on embedded firmware experience in C or C++ on microcontrollers or digital signal processors, including real-time constraints and interrupt-driven code.
  • Ability to design and use filters in time-critical, low-latency domains.
  • Ability to model and analyze dynamic systems using MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or similar tools to design and validate controllers before and after hardware bring-up.
  • Lab fluency with oscilloscopes, current probes, and data logging to characterize hardware and debug control performance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to track down issues spanning hardware, firmware, and tuning.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with enthusiasm for hands-on work in a dynamic team environment.
Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and tune low-level current, torque, velocity, and position control loops for electromechanical actuators.
  • Write and optimize embedded firmware that runs control loops in real time on microcontrollers or digital signal processors.
  • Model actuator and drivetrain dynamics, including motors, gearboxes, transmissions, and sensors, to inform controller design and tuning.
  • Implement and tune classical control techniques, including proportional-integral-derivative control, cascaded loops, feedforward, and state observers, and evaluate more advanced approaches when appropriate.
  • Work with electrical engineers to define current sensing, gate drive, encoder or sensor feedback, and other hardware needed to close the control loop.
  • Bring up new actuator hardware on the bench by instrumenting it, characterizing its behavior, and running initial control loops.
  • Debug control performance issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and data logging to distinguish hardware, firmware, and tuning problems.
  • Collaborate with motion planning, autonomy, and software teams to ensure low-level control behavior supports higher-level robot tasks.
  • Document control architectures, tuning procedures, and known limitations for use by other engineers.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience controlling actuators for robotics, exoskeletons, or other articulated mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with real-time operating systems and deterministic scheduling.
  • Experience with EtherCAT, CAN-FD, or other industrial or robotics communication protocols used for control.
  • Exposure to state estimation techniques, including Kalman filters and observers, for actuator-level sensor fusion.
  • Experience with strain-wave, cycloidal, or planetary transmissions and their impact on control design.
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards IEC 61508, ISO 13849, and ISO 26262 as applied to motor control systems.
  • Experience working closely with electrical engineers on driver hardware, including gate drive and current sensing, and with mechanical engineers on transmission design.
  • Ability to review schematics and printed circuit board layouts sufficiently to debug control hardware issues.

About the company

Persona AI develops humanoid robots and a labor platform to perform physically demanding tasks in industries like shipbuilding, construction, and energy infrastructure. These robots work alongside human employees to handle specialized jobs such as welding, allowing industrial sites to maintain continuous, 24/7 operations. Unlike many competitors, the company uses a "Constructor Program" that allows governments and large corporations to help co-architect the robots to meet their specific operational needs. The company's goal is to solve global labor shortages by providing a scalable robotic workforce for the world's most difficult industrial environments.

What believers are saying

  • POSCO signed a February 2026 MOU and began steel-coil trials that month.
  • Brian Davis joined in March 2026 after Amazon Robotics and Dell scaling roles.
  • A September 2026 report said Persona AI planned third-generation robots this fall.

What critics are saying

  • Persona AI remains pre-production; HD Hyundai deployment starts in 2027.
  • The company sold $65.36 million toward a $141.96 million 2026 offering.
  • If field trials fail, Persona AI becomes a demo company, not a manufacturer.

What makes Persona AI unique

  • Nic Radford and Jerry Pratt bring NASA and Figure-level robotics expertise.
  • Persona AI targets shipyards, steel mills, and energy sites, not consumer robots.
  • Its Constructor Program co-designs robots with governments and industrial giants like HD Hyundai.

Persona AI hires ex-Amazon Robotics exec to scale humanoid robot manufacturing

Persona AI, a Houston-based humanoid robotics company, has appointed Brian Davis as Head of Global Manufacturing to scale commercial production for industrial applications. Davis brings over 30 years of operations experience, including roles at Amazon Robotics and Dell Technologies, where he oversaw 25-fold increases in manufacturing volumes within four years. The appointment comes as Persona prepares to fulfil growing demand following agreements with HD Hyundai and POSCO Group for deployment in shipyards and steel manufacturing, plus a pilot programme with Louisiana. Founded in 2024, Persona AI develops humanoid robots for high-risk industrial tasks including welding, fabrication and heavy maintenance. Davis will oversee manufacturing infrastructure, supply chain management and quality control as the company transitions from prototype to volume production.
